An array of government luminaries graced the groundbreaking and cornerstone-laying program for the proposed library of Southern Luzon Polytechnic College last February 8, SLPC grounds.
The program started at around 9:30 a.m. where no less than Vice-Governor David Suarez, Hon. Raffy Nantes and Hon. Proceso Alcala, congressmen of the 1st and 2nd districts of Quezon, respectively, and our very own town mayor, Hon. Moises Villaseñor, with SLPC Acting President, Dr. Cecilia N. Gascon, led the groundbreaking and cornerstone laying at the future site of the College’s center of knowledge. They also took turns in putting ceremonial documents in the capsules and lowering them to the ground to which they poured cement afterwards, sealing the first part of the construction.
After the musical entertainment provided by the H.S. Band, Dr. Bella R. Muello, host of the ceremony, advised everyone to proceed to the Gym for the program which started with a message from Dr. Cecilia N. Gascon, SLPC Acting President. She thanked all the people who are supporting and helping the College achieve its visions. Afterwards, Lucban’s Mayor Moises Villaseñor delivered an inspirational talk. Then, to the delight of the crowd, the next speaker, Mr. Roberto Licup Sr., President of Quezon’s Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce signed and handed to Dr, Gascon a check amounting to 300, 000 pesos as his initial help for the construction of the library. Our College President then challenged others to contribute to the building of the school’s center of knowledge.
Board Secretary Manny Deazeta, who acted as the program’s master of ceremony, then introduced the energetic 1st District of Quezon Representative, Cong. Raffy Nantes. He took center stage as he extolled the roles of the youth and the academic institution in a nation’s progress. Afterwards, he pledged 2.3 million pesos to SLPC’s cause. Next came the speech of Vice-Governor David Suarez, where he shared his blessings by donating 400, 000 pesos to help SLPC realize its dreams. The one million-peso donation guaranteed by Congressman Proceso Alcala of the 2nd District of Quezon, also drew applause from the crowd.
To add joy to the program, the SLPC Faculty Choir rendered a number which was greeted by cheers and applause from the students who were delighted to see their teachers sing and dance to a medley of 70’s and 80’s OPM music. Afterwards, the Sinag Banahaw Cultural Dance Troupe presented traditional dances.
Vice President for Administration and Finance was then called for the closing remarks. But before the program ended, Mayor Villaseñor was called again to say something. He then said that he’s providing his equipment for free for the construction of the library, plus 100, 000 pesos in cash donation. Perhaps inspired by this, SLPC’s Founding President, Mr. Angelo Peña, also told the crowd that he’s giving 2,000 dollars as his personal contribution.
With such generous souls as our benefactors, the state-of-the-art library for the College will not just be a dream, but a dream that will come true.
