Vietnamese Students join SLSU flag ceremony in ASEAN-inspired attire

On March 3, the Vietnamese students joined the key officials, faculty, and employees of Southern Luzon State University's Main Campus, as they showcased their colorful and traditional Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-inspired outfits during SLSU’s flag ceremony on the first Monday of March, in line with the latest Civil Service Commission Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 16 and CSC Resolution No. 2400766, series of 2024 which sets the Revised Dress Code of Government Officials and Employees. The celebration also coincided with the observance of Women’s Month, adding a special touch of cultural diversity and gender inclusivity to the occasion.

Following the flag ceremony, the Vietnamese students, accompanied by Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, visited the Office of the President. There, they were warmly welcomed by Dr. Frederick T. Villa, President of Southern Luzon State University, who also took the opportunity to introduce them to the university’s campus, offering insight into the institution’s facilities and its commitment to fostering international cooperation and cultural exchange.

Dr. Lalas of Redlands University shares insights on diversity and inclusion with GS-CTE students

On March 1, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) proudly welcomed visiting Professor Dr. Jose Lalas, a full professor at Redlands University, U.S.A, as a guest speaker for the Graduate School’s College of Teacher Education (CTE) PhD in Educational Management and in Science Education students under the classes of CTE Dean Dr. Vanessa Zubieta, and GS-CAS faculty Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes and Dr. Helene D. Daya. Dr. Lalas, shared his extensive academic work and experience in promoting diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice within educational systems in California, USA.

During his insightful talk, Dr. Lalas emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive learning environments that cater to students from diverse backgrounds. Drawing from his research and firsthand experiences, he discussed best practices in creating equitable opportunities for all learners, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnicity, or learning abilities. He also highlighted the role of educators in advocating for policies that support marginalized communities in the education sector.

Graduate students and faculty members engaged in a dynamic discussion with Dr. Lalas, exchanging ideas on how to apply these principles in the Philippine educational context. His visit also aimed to inspire future educators to become agents of change in promoting a more just and inclusive educational system.

SLSU IAELO and QA employees participate in internationalization and TNHE workshop

Staff from the International Affairs and External Linkages Office and the Quality Assurance Office represented Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) at the "Orientation Workshop on Internationalization (IZN) and Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) Program" held on February 24 at Twin Lakes Hotel in Laurel, Batangas.

This workshop was meticulously designed to support the initiatives and objectives set forth by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the International Affairs Office regarding the Internationalization of Philippine higher education. It aimed to provide participants with an enriching and interactive platform for discussions and presentations, facilitating a deeper understanding of the nation’s ongoing commitment to enhancing and globalizing its higher education sector.

The workshop was conducted by the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office IV-A and the Association of International Relations Officers.

SLSU, Thai experts engage in innovative learning on distance education

On February 24, Dr. Kamolrat Intaratat and Dr. Piyachat Lomchavakarn, distinguished delegates from Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, Thailand, visited Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) to exchange insights on distance education. They are warmly welcomed by President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, along with Resource Linkages Director Dr. Cecilia N, Gascon, and International Affairs and External Linkages Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano.

The programme at Banahaw Hall, SLSU Hotel, commenced with an opening remark from the Graduate School OIC-Dean, Dr. Marife S. Magpantay, who expressed her appreciation for furthering learning opportunities through distance education. This was followed by a special message from the university president, who expressed gratitude to the guest for sharing valuable insights on the topic and exploring collaboration opportunities as well.

Dr. Intaratat provided a comprehensive overview of her engagement in distance education, highlighting the ecosystem of a holistic education, micro-credit courses such as e-Smart Ageing course, Digital Entrepreneurship, Smart Farm, and AI Skills. She also illustrated Thai’s Education 4.0 driven by ICT and innovation. The talk concluded with an appreciation message on the insightful sharing on distance education from VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Dhenalyn Aquino-Dejelo. Following the photo opportunity, the College deans and other officials engaged in networking and discussions.

SLSU supports Alumni Federation’s Grand Alumni Homecoming 2024

SLSU-Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) coordinated with SLSU Alumni Federation, Inc. (SLSUAFI) for the Grand Alumni Homecoming on August 3, 2024 at the university gymnasium. SLSU-OIAA served as chair of the search committee on the outstanding alumni while SLSUAFI Vice-President Dr. Armando A. Jasul acted as the overall chair.

The previous engagements of the Federation were highlighted by BOD Member Mr. Gerald Escleta through a milestone presentation. An inclusive plans and programs for SLSU alumni was presented by SLSUAFI President Mr. Benson Del Valle. As the homecoming is held in celebration with the university’s 60^th founding anniversary, the proposed new vision, mission and goals for SLSU was also disseminated by VP-REPDI Dr. Marissa C. Esperal.

SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa represented by OIC VP-AFA Dr. Arvin Natividad and Engr. Renante Abuyan on behalf of Lucban Mayor Agustin Villaverde graced the said occasion, both extending support to SLSU Alumni. The alumni homecoming, attended by graduates of different programs and batches, had been an excellent opportunity to reconnect with people who played a significant role in their academic journey, a great way to reminisce those fond memories, and even created a new connection with other alumni.

A company visit to Open IT, Lucena City was facilitated on March 13, 2024, as part of the academic engagement for the foreign and local students of the Graduate School – Doctor of Business Administration program. The said company was tapped by the Director of Office of International and Alumni Affairs, DBA Program Chairperson and DBA 511 Multinational Management Professor Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano in coordination with the Officer-in-charge Dean of Graduate School Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla. Attended by the DBA students Ms. Hoang Thi Du, Ms. Mai Diem Lan Huong, Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dang Khoi, Ms. Tu Mai Hoang Phi, Ms. Maricel S. Diala, Ms. Queenie Ann P. Pastores, Ms. Gezelle C. Nequinto, OIAA staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and student assistant Ms. Alyssa Ericka Terciano.

Open IT is a technology company that specializes in providing innovative IT solutions to businesses and help companies streamline their IT operations while improving the overall efficiency by offering a wide range of services, including network management, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and software development.

Presentations headed by the OpeniT Human Resource Management Head Mr. Eduardo Pagaduan, Jr. with staff Ms. Julienne Tolentino, Ms. Faye Flancia and Account Manager Mr. Jesse Valdez, sharing a brief background of the company and highlighting the software management solution, professional services and the importance of achieving license optimization goals providing the students and faculty an in-depth understanding of the IT company’s success and strategies employed to stay ahead of the industry trends. The company also shared their unique OpeniT care programs which focuses on making a positive impact in people’s lives through innovative hiring practices and donation of profits to charity organizations worldwide.

The visit provided the students with valuable insights into the company’s success story, the extent of its global business operation, the diversity of human workforce, and its commitment to social responsibility, inspiring them leading to the appreciation on the potentials of the technology sector.

Facilitation of Educational Visit with PhD-EdM Foreign Students

On March 11, 2024, an educational tour was facilitated by the Office of International and Alumni Affairs through its Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano in coordination with the Officer-in-Charge Dean of Graduate School Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management (PhD EdM) faculty who tapped the office and schools to be visited - Dean of College of Teacher Education Dr. Vanessa C. Zubieta, Director of Quality Assurance, Dr. Gillian Portia P. Dimaranan, and Dean of College of Information Technology Dr. Arvin N. Natividad. The PhD – Educational Management (PhD-EdM) foreign students; Mr. Duong Van Doan, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa and Mr. Vu Phi Long, made a visit to Department of Education (DepEd) Division Office in Tayabas, City, as part of their academic engagement in aim to learn from their successful strategies in educational management, curriculum development, and student learnings.

The PhD-EdM students had the opportunity to meet with the Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Celedonio B. Balderas Jr., Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Herbert D. Perez, teachers, staff, and students, gaining valuable insights on the challenges and success of the education system in Tayabas City.

SLSU PhD-EdM student Mr. Mikael Sandino T. Andrey, and alumni Dr. Joseph Jay U. Aureada and Dr. Herbert D. Perez shared their personal experiences and journey from being a student to becoming educators, highlighting their challenges and lessons they learned along the way. One of the highlights are the importance of continuous learning and professional development in the field of education which inspired the group. The exchange of ideas and experiences between SLSU faculty, PhD-EdM students and DepEd officials made the experience insightful and engaging.

Moreover, a visit to Buenaventura Alandy National High School and Luis Palad Integrated High School was also held providing the foreign students with further insights with educational landscape, broadening their perspectives on education management and student development.

In support for the event, the OIAA Director and staff together with the foreign students of the PhD-EdM and DBA program joined the parade and the set of activities included in the universityhood. The Foreign students expressed their appreciation on being invited in the university celebration and actively participated in the "Palaro ng Lahi", volleyball, and Dance Competition.

SLSU-CABHA wraps up faculty training on International Business with CESO through a Culminating Activity

With the full support of the administration, SLSU - Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) in collaboration with Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) has successfully wrapped up the “Capability Enhancement on International Business for College of Administration, Business Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) Faculty with CESO” through a Culminating Activity held on September 1, 2022 via zoom. The event highlighted the learning insights of the faculty in the series of training session from July 14, 2022 anchored on CESO’s program on Accelerating Women Empowerment.

SLSU Head of Faculty and Staff Development Program Dr. Susana A. Salvacion formally opened the Culminating Activity by giving a warm welcome remark followed by the inspirational message by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes. Present in the said event are the Dean of Graduate School (GS) Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee, faculty of CABHA and GS – DBA and MBA programs, OIAA staff, and CESO Project Officers – Mr. Vener Valerio and Mr. Erwin Altamarino. The synthesis of learning insights and appreciation were expressed by Prof. Rosemarie N. Gella and Prof. Jeremiah P. Elloso as one of the trainees. The closing remarks are delivered by Dr. Chona V. Cayabat – Dean of CABHA and Mr. Matt Navalta – CESO Country Representative, Philippines.

The faculty who was grouped into four, presented an export plan as the output of the training which were commended by CESO. Furthermore, the output can be disseminated and discussed to the concerned entities. This may serve as a rapid export assessment and can be coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) is privileged to be supported and complemented with talents of CESO in the goal of sustaining personnel development and competency level of teaching personnel through faculty training. This training on international business handled by a well-rounded CESO Advisor Mr. Aarij Bashir and the active participation of the trainees have made the objectives of the mentoring met–provision of technical training, updates on trends on international business operation, and uplifted entrepreneurial spirit.
