BOR leads blessing of 4 new SLSU vehicles

Four new passenger vans were ceremonially blessed on April 4, 2026, to support official travel and other university functions.

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Board of Regents (BOR), led by CHED Commissioner and BOR Chairperson, Hon. Myrna Q. Mallari, and University President, Hon. Frederick T. Villa, led the event. Hon. Mallari described the acquisition of the vehicles as a “blessing,” noting that it is not common for state universities and colleges to acquire such transportation assets.

The purchase of the four passenger vans, costing a total of Php 9.92 million, was authorized after securing an Authority to Purchase Motor Vehicles from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and obtaining the approval under the BOR Resolution No. 05, s. 2026, during the Special Board Meeting held on March 6. The passenger vans are expected to support travel for activities related to education and other engagements.

Members of the BOR also visited the SLSU Main Campus at Lucban, Quezon, to participate in the 1st Regular Board Meeting held on the same day.

This collaboration aims to foster economic growth, innovation, and academic engagement in Quezon Province, strengthening the university’s role in community development and industry support.

SLSU empowers Barangay 6 with seminar on women’s rights

In line with its commitment to gender equality and community extension services, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) conducted a seminar titled “Karapatan ng Kababaihan, Alamin at Itaguyod: A Seminar on the Magna Carta of Women for the Community of Brgy. 6” on April 21 at the Barangay Hall of Brgy. 6, Lucban, Quezon.

The seminar was organized in response to a formal request from the Tanggapan ng Sangguniang Barangay of Barangay 6. It aimed to educate the barangay’s community and stakeholders on the provisions of the law, raise awareness, and deepen understanding of women’s rights, contributing to the elimination of discrimination by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling, and promoting the rights of women.

The activity gathered members of the Sangguniang Barangay, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), Barangay Tanod, and parents of daycare children from Barangay 6. The seminar began with opening remarks from Hon. Melchor F. Bojelador, Punong Barangay of Brgy. 6, who warmly welcomed the participants and facilitators, emphasizing the importance of conducting seminars empowering women. This was followed by an inspirational message from Ms. Josephine Robelo, Social Welfare Officer and member of the Municipal Gender and Development (GAD) Office of Lucban, who commended both Brgy. 6 and SLSU for their continued efforts in promoting gender equality.

Leading the discussion on the Magna Carta of Women was Assoc. Prof. Rene P. Zubieto, Director of the SLSU Gender and Development Office. Through an interactive activity,participants shared their perspectives on womanhood and what rights they are entitled to. His lecture covered the purpose, scope, specific rights, and key provisions of the said law. The participants actively engaged in the session, sharing their own views and personal experiences.

The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Hon. Rosana P. Laguador, Barangay Kagawad and Co-chair of the Committee on Gender and Development of Brgy. 6, who urged participants to apply their new knowledge in safeguarding and promoting their rights as women.

SLSU, LWCF, Grace Evangelical Association, Montgomery Kowk Medical Team provide health assistance to Lucban and SLSU Community

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), in partnership with the Grace Evangelical Association, Living Word Christian Fellowship (LWCF), and Montgomery Kowk Medical Team, conducted a Medical, Dental, Optical and Surgical Mission Program for the residents of Lucban and the SLSU community.

On April 8, the partnering institutions implemented “Serbisyong Medikal Para sa Bayan,” an outreach program that aimed to promote health, prevent illness, provide treatment and minor surgical procedures, and conduct physical examinations among the beneficiaries.

The one-day event served 120 patients for medical consultations, 30 for dental check-ups and tooth extractions, 5 for minor surgeries and circumcisions, and 60 for optical check-ups.

SLSU onboards first batch of TBI incubatees through MOA signing, signals start of incubation phase

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) marked a defining step in its innovation agenda with the successful conduct of the Ceremonial Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Incubation on March 30, at the REPDI Training Center, formally onboarding three enterprises into the SLSU Technology Business Incubator (TBI), signaling the transition from program establishment to full operational delivery of incubation services.

The MOA for Incubation establishes the formal relationship between SLSU as the incubator and the participating enterprises, outlining provisions on incubation services, intellectual property management, monitoring mechanisms, and the responsibilities of both parties. It also clarifies that while SLSU provides structured support—such as mentorship, technology advisory, and commercialization assistance—the incubatees retain ownership and control over their respective enterprises.

At the center of the event were the pioneering incubatees or enterprises that have completed the TBI’s screening and technical evaluation process. Representing them at the event were Engr. Jessica M. Castillo of Beegood Agriventures OPC, recognized as SLSU’s first technology adopter; Dr. Nona D. Nagares of Nnovate Food Products, identified as the university’s first spin-off company; and Ms. Ma. Louchiel S. Labay of Ouan’s Worth Farm and Family Resort Corporation, which represents the first co-incubation initiative between SLSU and Laguna State Polytechnic University’s Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubator (LSPU ATBI).

During the ceremony, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, University President, reaffirmed the strategic importance of the initiative, noting that programs such as the TBI enable SLSU to move forward as an institution that actively engages with stakeholders beyond the academe to benefit local industries and communities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI), expressed her strong enthusiasm for the continued development of the TBI, recognizing it as one of the core strengths of the REPDI cluster. She underscored the role of the TBI in bridging research outputs with enterprise applications and in reinforcing SLSU’s institutional capacity for technology transfer and commercialization.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Jennifer Edytha J. Lagrazon, Center Chief and Manager of SLSU TBI, emphasized that the achievement of the SLSU TBI is grounded in the administration’s continued support and trust, which enabled the office to move from concept to implementation.

The ceremony also featured messages of commitment from the incubatees, reinforcing a shared direction toward product development, market validation, and long-term enterprise sustainability. This is supported by the TBI’s structured approach, which includes capacity-building activities, business development planning, and continuous performance monitoring.

Beyond Representation: How SLSU’s workforce organizations are shaping leadership and governance

In many universities, workforce organizations are often seen as voices of concern and advocates that speak when needed. At Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), however, they are becoming something more as they work as active partners in leadership, governance, and institutional growth.

This evolving role took center stage as SLSU’s Faculty Association (FA), Employee Association (EA), and Faculty and Employee Club (FEC) embarked on a two-day benchmarking initiative at Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, from February 26 to 27. More than a routine visit, the activity underscored how organized groups composed of the university’s faculty and staff are stepping into strategic roles that align closely with the administration’s vision for good governance.

At CLSU, SLSU delegates engaged with key officials to examine systems on organizational performance, labor relations, and institutional practices. The exchange offered a glimpse into how structured faculty and staff representation can coexist with, and even strengthen, university leadership. A campus tour followed, allowing participants to see firsthand how heritage and innovation can be harmonized in a well-managed academic environment.

Yet, the benchmarking went beyond systems and structures. A session on mental health emphasized its critical role in effective leadership and sound institutional management that acknowledges governance is not only about policies, but also about people.

The second day shifted the spotlight back to SLSU. Presenting the university’s own journey, challenges, and direction, Ms. Maria Cristine D. Absulio, SLSU’s Supervising Administrative Officer and former SLSU FEC President, highlighted how collective action among workforce organizations contributes to both faculty and staff welfare and institutional development. Her message reinforced a key idea that an empowered university workforce is not separate from governance but is integral to it.

This perspective was further strengthened through concrete outputs. The Faculty Association and Employee Association presented their commitment statements, while the Faculty and Employee Club shared its position paper. Together, they affirmed support for the university’s austerity measures and demonstrated that advocacy for faculty and staff welfare can go hand in hand with institutional responsibility.

For Hon. Gino A. Cabrera who is the SLSU’ Faculty Regent, Faculty Association President, and the activity’s proponent, the benchmarking was a step toward sharpening organizational clarity and purpose. Strengthening competencies, he noted, is essential in helping workforce organizations define priorities and understand their roles within the broader university system.

What makes this initiative particularly significant is its underlying model, specifically on workforce organizations not as oppositional bodies, but as collaborative stakeholders. Supported by the university administration, these groups are cultivating a culture of shared leadership, that is one where dialogue, accountability, and unity are central.

CLSU was an ideal benchmarking site due to its well-established reputation as a leading state university and its structured, multi-organizational employee representation through organizations such as CLSU’s Faculty Association Incorporated (FAI), Allied Services Employees Association (ASEA), and Labor Union of Teachers and Employees (CLUTCHES).

As SLSU continues to strengthen its governance framework, the message from this benchmarking activity is clear. It is when faculty and staff organizations are empowered, aligned, and engaged that they become more than representatives, but co-builders of the university’s future.

SLSU unveils PCIEERRD-funded Tropical Wine and Distilled Spirit Research Laboratory

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) marked another milestone with the successful launching and inauguration of its Tropical Wine and Distilled Spirit (TWDS) Research Laboratory at the SLSU Lucena Campus, March 17.

The TWDS Research Laboratory is a two-year project headed by Prof. Aurita A. Laguador, together with Dr. Claire Ann Yao and Prof. Alma J. Caringal. It is supported by funding of PhP 4,775,100.00 from the Department of Science and Techology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

During the inauguration program, Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI), delivered her welcome remarks, emphasizing the significance of the facility in strengthening SLSU’s research capabilities.

In his inspirational message, University President Frederick T. Villa, DTech, highlighted the University’s vision in innovation and technology development, particularly in value-adding local resources.

Messages of support were delivered by distinguished guests from partner institutions and government agencies, including Engr. Niñaliza Escorial from DOST-PCIEERD; Regional Director Emelita Bagsit from DOST IV-A; Dr. Bernardo Sepeda from National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP); Dr. Cynthia Grace Gregorio from Institute of Chemistry – UP Diliman; and, Mr. Nesler Louies Almagro, representing the Provincial Governor of Quezon, Hon. Angelina “Doktora Helen” D.L. Tan.

The inaugural activities featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling of the marker, laboratory tour, demonstration of lambanog mixology, and a cultural performance by the SLSU Sinag Banahaw Cultural Troupe–all which showcased the University’s commitment to advancing research in tropical wine and distilled spirits. The event then concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director of the Office of Research Services.

With the TWDS Research Laboratory, SLSU continues to expand its research efforts, fostering innovation that transforms Quezon Province’ agricultural resources into high-value products.

Huntahan: SLSU, UPLB Seminar Benefits SLSU REPDI Personnel for R&E Service Improvement

For the second series of Huntahan, the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) International Research Seminar Series, SLSU partnered with the University of the Philippines - Los Baños, Office of Institutional Development in Higher Education, for the training on research, development, and extension project management from March 18-19.

The two-day training targeted the offices under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (OVP-REPDI). They were trained under the guidance of the subject matter experts from UPLB: Dr. Marian P. de Leon, Director of the Museum of Natural History and Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for R&E; Ms. Czarlina May E. Magnata, University Extension Specialist II and Head of the Knowledge Management, Extension, and Public Service Section (KMEPSS); Engr. Lavinia Marie M. Abucay, University Extension Specialist II and Head, Research Management Section, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, and Extension; Ms. Ana Margarita S. Palma, University Extension Specialist I; Ms. Lean Mechelle D. Ramilo, University Research Associate I of KMEPSS; and Mr. John Roedd V. Collado, University Research Associate I of KMEPSS. The event was also made possible through Dr. Reniel S. Pamplona, UPLB Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education (OIDHE).

Among the topics discussed were the formulation of the R&E Agenda, navigating research management, project proposal evaluation, project monitoring, knowledge management, financial management, project closing, and extension management.

According to Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, SLSU VP-REPDI, this is the first of the Huntahan Series, in which the OVP-REPDI personnel are the beneficiaries. Dr. Esperal also highlighted the growing number of young OVP-REPDI personnel – a sign that the institution’s REPDI is very promising.Aside from supporting the mandate of the institution, which is to provide quality service to its stakeholders and to contribute to the advancement of Quezon Province and its adjoining provinces, the training is also in preparation for the opening of Phase II of the Revised Organization and Staffing Standards for SUCs (ROSSS) – opening 91 plantilla positions for the OVP-REPDI.

SLSU, Quezon Provincial Health Office lead efforts on celebrating women, safeguarding health

Through the initiative of the SLSU Gender and Development Office, in partnership with the Provincial Health Office of Quezon, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) successfully celebrated National Women’s Month at the SLSU Gymnasium, March 17.

The event drew almost a thousand participants, including representatives from different colleges and campuses, as well as all teaching and non-teaching staff of SLSU. The program highlighted women’s health, empowerment, and inclusivity through lectures, screenings, and collaborative activities.

The highlight of the celebration was the Women’s Health Awareness Seminar delivered by Ms. Norieta M. Latiza, Midwife II, who served as the Resource Speaker. As the Cancer Control Program Coordinator, she provided an insightful discussion on breast and cervical cancer prevention, stressing the importance of early detection and accessible healthcare services. Her lecture was complemented by simultaneous screenings, which gave participants direct access to vital health interventions during the event. Supporting Ms. Latiza were her colleagues from the Provincial Health Office of Quezon: Ms. Eden S. Quinto, RM, BSM, Midwife II, the Focal Person for Indigenous Persons, Persons with Disabilities, and Senior Citizens, and Ms. Ma. Rizalina A. Patanayan, Midwife II, the Assistant Cancer Control Program Coordinator. Their active involvement ensured that the program addressed diverse health needs and strengthened the advocacy for women’s health and equality. Together, the team’s efforts made the Women’s Month and University’s Charter Day Celebration a successful and memorable occasion for the SLSU community.

Ultimately, this activity served as an eye-opener for women, raising awareness of their reproductive health and overall well-being and reinforcing the importance of prioritizing women’s health in both personal and community contexts.

Southern Luzon State University demonstrated its commitment to promoting the health and wellness of its faculty and employees through a fitness dance session and a Palaro ng Lahi athletic competition, alongside the distribution of health sanitary kits on March 16.

The event brought together teaching and non-teaching staff, students, and university partners at the SLSU Gymnasium. It opened with an energizing fitness dance session led by two Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science students. Participants enthusiastically followed lively beats and dynamic movements, setting the tone for the day’s activities and filling the venue with energy and excitement as everyone warmed up for the friendly competitions ahead.

Following the Zumba session, six teams—Yellow, Blue, Violet, Orange, Red, and Green—each composed of 10 participants, competed in the much-anticipated Palarong Lahi and athletic events. Each group pushed their limits to complete the seven obstacle stations in the shortest time possible. The games showcased traditional Filipino recreational activities while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and collaboration among different offices and departments, filling the venue with laughter, cheers, and friendly rivalry.

With around 1,000 participants from various campuses, colleges, and offices, the event that coincides with the celebration of SLSU’s 19th University Charter Day successfully cultivated a strong sense of unity while reinforcing the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Overall, beyond the series of games and activities, the wellness program served as a reminder that a healthy university community is essential in building a more productive, resilient, and service-oriented institution. Through initiatives like this, Southern Luzon State University continues to advance programs that enhance the well-being of its students and employees while strengthening camaraderie across the campus.
