SLSU participates in Year 1 Semi-Annual Review of RAISE Program Phase 2 with Southern Tagalog SUCs and RDI

SLSU Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO) and and member of Interagency Committee (IAC) for Agribusiness Hub (ABH), including the SLSU TBI (Technology Business Incubator) staff joined fellow stakeholders from ten (10) State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and one (1) Research and Development Institute (RDI) in the Year 1 Semi-Annual Review of the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program Phase 2 Project — Advancing Technology Transfer in Southern Tagalog Agriculture, Aquatic, and Research, Development and Extension Consortium (STAARRDEC) through the RAISE Program.

The first day of the review featured the presentation of 17 semi-annual accomplishment reports from SUCs and RDI implementers. These reports highlighted achievements in the project’s consolidated scoreboard, status of institutionalization, intellectual property (IP) filings, pre-commercialization reports prepared, technologies commercialized, training seminars and technology promotions conducted and attended, partnerships formed, socio-economic impact, problems encountered and actions taken, learnings, and other technical accomplishments.

The presentation of Project 2: 1A – Strengthening the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IP-TBM) at SLSU was reported by Mr. Giehway R. Liwanag, Science Research Specialist of SLSU TBI, on behalf of Dr. Nona D. Nagares, Project Leader of RAISE Program Phase 2. The presentation emphasized SLSU’s progress in enhancing its IP management capabilities, commercialization targets, challenges and problems encountered, and key strategies in maximizing institutional funds as counterparts of the external funding from the RAISE Program.

On the second day, the Regional Consultation and Meeting for the Regional Agribusiness Hub (ABH) in Southern Tagalog convened key representatives to align ongoing efforts across implementing Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs). Representing SLSU were Ms. Mary Jane R. Villaverde, Science Research Assistant of SLSU ITSSO, and Dr. Manilyn G. Zubieta, IAC Member of SLSU. The meeting agenda focused on critical operational and strategic concerns, including: (1) finalization of the Terms of Reference (TOR) for Regional IAC members; (2) review of Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 accomplishments and the financial status of Project 12; (3) updates on the project workplan and schedule of deliverables per CMI; (4) development of a harmonized capacity-building program; (5) panning for pre-commercialization strategies for supported technologies; (6) establishing mechanisms for progress monitoring; and (7) coordination of upcoming activities for the succeeding quarters.

Moving forward, SLSU is committed to fulfilling the remaining Year 1 deliverables, guided by the corrective actions and valuable insights gained during the review. With continued support from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), through the RAISE Program and the STAARRDEC, SLSU will strengthen its IP-TBM operations. In particular, SLSU will focus on enhancing its technology commercialization systems and advancing the technopreneurial capabilities of its stakeholders to ensure meaningful, sustainable impact.

SLSU TBI holds 6th Huntahan Seminar Series to strengthen technology commercialization through strategic financial and marketing planning

As part of its commitment to building a stronger innovation and technopreneurial ecosystem, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its Technology Business Incubator (TBI) and in collaboration with the Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO) and Office of Research Services (ORS), successfully conducted the 6th Huntahan Seminar Series on the Transfer and Commercialization of SLSU Products and Technologies on May 26–27, 2025 at the 3rd floor of SLSU Library, Main Campus.

This initiative aligns with the CALABARZON Development Plan 2023–2028 and Republic Act No. 10055, reinforcing the university’s mandate to bring publicly funded research to the marketplace. The seminar aimed to equip participants—including faculty-researchers, non-teaching personnel, and members of the Technology Transfer – Technical Working Group (TT-TWG)—with practical knowledge in financial analysis, marketing strategy, and technology readiness for successful commercialization of SLSU-developed products and technologies.

The first day began with the Opening Remarks delivered by Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director of ORS, who emphasized the university’s growing responsibility in bridging research and enterprise. He was followed by a Message from Dr. Frederick T. Villa, University President, who highlighted SLSU’s strategic direction in aligning with national innovation goals, specifically its technology transfer and commercialization endeavors. Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI), also gave a motivating message that encouraged active participation and collaboration for research commercialization.

The session then proceeded with a lecture by Asst. Prof. Princess M. Feliciano of Cavite State University, who tackled the Financial Framework for Commercialization. She underscored the importance of prioritizing financial analysis and projections to anticipate business sustainability and avoid failure.

“Kapag sa business, either business plan model or capstone man ‘yan, it is really important to conduct financial analyzation and projection for it will foresaw the success of your target business,” she advised.

Participants were grouped for a hands-on workshop where they developed financial projections for their selected technologies. Each group presented their output, practicing financial planning and critical thinking.

The second day commenced with an inspiring message from Dr. Jennifer Edytha J. Lagrazon, Center Chief/Manager of the TBI, who emphasized the importance of integrating commercialization thinking in all stages of research and innovation. She encouraged the “handpicked” participants to take initiative and become advocates of technology transfer within their respective units.

The morning session featured Asst. Prof. Gener T. Cueno, also from Cavite State University, who presented a comprehensive lecture on the Marketing Plan for Technology-Based Products. He discussed how to create customer-focused strategies, design value propositions, and select effective sales channels. His workshop centered on the Value Proposition Canvas, with participants applying the framework to SLSU-developed technologies.

Each group was given time to present their canvases, engaging in peer learning and feedback sessions. Participants also reflected on their key takeaways during the closing plenary.

The two-day event concluded with the Closing Remarks from Dr. Lagrazon, who challenged participants to transform their learning into actionable strategies and champion SLSU’s commercialization efforts.

“Technology transfer is more than compliance—it’s about impact and income. Through collaboration, we can elevate our innovations beyond the campus and into communities,” she affirmed.

The 6th Huntahan Seminar Series not only deepened participants’ understanding of financial and marketing frameworks for technology transfer but also cultivated a stronger commitment to commercializing university innovations—solidifying SLSU’s role as a regional driver of inclusive, science-based development.

RevUp: From Insights to Greater Heights – A Startup Roadshow that Ignited Innovation at SLSU Lucena Campus

In a bold move to empower young innovators and future founders, Startup Roadshow brought together students, faculty, startup enthusiasts, and experts in a one-of-a-kind roadshow, held in partnership with the Innovation CONSortium (ICONS) South Luzon, University of the Philippines Los Baños Technology Transfer and Technology Business Development Office (UPLB TTBDO), UPLB Sibol Business Incubator (SBI), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Southern Luzon State University Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (SLSU ITSSO) and SLSU Technology Business Incubator (TBI). The activity was attended by 100 participants composed of SLSU Lucena Campus faculties, researchers and students from tech-based courses. Held at the Covered Court of SLSU Lucena Campus, participants excitedly lined up for registration and visited the DICT booth, where exclusive collectibles were given away through the promotion of their eGov application.

The event opened with a welcome message from Dr. Jess Mark L. Alinea, Campus Director of SLSU-Lucena, delivering the earnest message from Dr. Frederick T. Villa, University President of SLSU, highlighting the importance of innovation and collaboration for regional growth that should start within the university.

Ms. Cathrene Amante, University Research Associate I, from the UPLB TTBDO and SBI kicked off the learning sessions with The Startup Playbook—a roadmap on how to turn ideas into viable business models, identify markets, and build with purpose. Encouraging students to be part of the growing Philippine Startup Ecosystem. Ms. Amante also highlighted partner NGAs, investors and enablers that can help them fund their tech-business ideas.

Ms. Evelyn Rose Hernandez, Project Development Officer II, from the DICT Region IV-A CALABARZON followed, highlighting how the government is actively supporting startup growth through enabling policies, digital tools, and innovation hubs. They are also the ones that initiated the 1st Philippine Startup Challenge in the CALABARZON region wherein, SUCs and HEIs actively participated.

Ms. Keisha Denolo, founder of Foggy Ecoworks, shared her journey as a startup founder tackling sustainability challenges. Her story was a powerful reminder that real-world impact often begins with a simple idea and a strong mission. Keeping her why to continue with her business solution.

A lively Fireside Chat allowed attendees to ask direct questions to the speakers—on topics like building teams, dealing with failure, and where to find support for startup journeys. Though there are limited questions from the SLSU students, Mr. Giehway Liwanag, Science Research Specialist of SLSU-TBI, encouraged everyone to be part of the startup ecosystem and take advantage of the resources available while they are still in the university.

After a short break, Mr. Arvin Castro, Project Technical Aide III, of UPLB-TTBDO shared the inspiring story behind ICONs South Luzon, a grassroots network built to connect student entrepreneurs, technopreneurs, and innovation leaders across the region.

Then came the much-awaited Pitch Sprint! Facilitated by Ms. Eunice Dianne Algar, University Research Associate I, asked the participants to form a group of five, with 15 minutes to brainstorm, 1 minute to pitch! Judges evaluated each pitch based on innovation, feasibility, and impact. This fast-paced exercise pushed participants to think critically, collaborate under pressure, and communicate their ideas effectively—mirroring real startup experiences.

To wrap up the event, Dr. Nona D. Nagares, Director of SLSU-ITSSO delivered a heartfelt closing message: “Each of us is a big part of a community—and each one has the potential to make a greater impact.” Finally, Ms. Amante officially closed the program, thanking all participants, partners, and supporters—especially DICT and SLSU—for helping make the event a success.

From insights to action, the Startup Roadshow proved that the startup spirit in South Luzon is strong, determined, and ready to scale greater heights. With sustained collaboration between universities, government, and enablers, this community is poised to become a launchpad for the next wave of innovative Filipino startups.

SLSU ITSSO and TBI forge stronger innovation ties with SLSU JGE Tagkawayan Campus

In a significant step toward strengthening intellectual property (IP) protection and promoting technology transfer and commercialization, the SLSU Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO) and Technology Business Incubator (TBI) successfully conducted a two-day coordination meeting with SLSU Judge Guillermo Eleazar (JGE) Tagkawayan Campus on May 8–9, 2025. The activity focused on ways of protecting their IPs, the right process of transferring SLSU-developed technologies through commercialization in line with Republic Act No. 10055 and the university’s IP policy and Technology Transfer Protocol.

The two-day meeting provided a venue for aligning the campus’ research and development efforts with the university’s IP management strategies. It included technical sessions led by ITSSO and TBI personnel:

• Mr. Giehway R. Liwanag, Science Research Specialist of SLSU TBI, opened the program with “Innovation in Action: Understanding the Roles of ITSSO and TBI”, presenting the foundational functions of the university’s innovation support units.

• Engr. Dan Mark C. Cabriga, IP Management Specialist of SLSU ITSSO, conducted a session on “Protecting Invention: A Comprehensive Guide to Patent Documents Drafting and Prior Art Searching”, guiding participants through the essential steps of identifying novelty and preparing patent applications.

• Ms. Mary Jane R. Villaverde, Science Research Assistant of SLSU ITSSO, presented “Unlocking Innovation: Technology Licensing & Commercialization”, emphasizing how to translate research into technologies ready for market adoption.

• Mr. Romano L. Decena, Project Development Officer of SLSU TBI, delivered “Kickstart Your Startup: From Idea to Launch”, focusing on the transition of research outputs to entrepreneurial ventures.

Participants engaged in workshop activities on prior art searching, patent document drafting, and technology commercialization pathways, applying tools such as the Business Model Canvas and a guided pitch deck and pitch presentation. Outputs from the workshops were presented by participants, showcasing early-stage concepts for technology adoption and enterprise development.

The success of the activity was made possible through the collective support of the SLSU JGE Tagkawayan administration, with special acknowledgment to their Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI) unit for facilitating logistical arrangements and resource mobilization.

As the activity concluded, ITSSO and TBI emphasized the following call to action to sustain momentum and guide future campus initiatives:

• 𝗧𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲. Begin with proper documentation, pursue IP registration, and consult ITSSO for support.

• 𝗧𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Identify ways their research can be translated into usable technologies that solve real-world problems.

• 𝗧𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆. Partner with colleagues, units, and industry to co-develop and co-innovate.

• 𝗧𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲. Explore pathways for licensing, startup formation, or industry adoption of their work.

This coordination meeting marks a significant step toward institutionalizing innovation practices at SLSU JGE Tagkawayan. With continued support and strategic implementation, the campus is positioned to contribute meaningfully to the university’s broader innovation and commercialization objectives.

Pioneering Technology Transfer – Technical Working Group (TT-TWG) Formed to Spearhead Commercialization of SLSU-Developed Technologies

The SLSU Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO) marked a significant milestone with the inaugural meeting of the Technology Transfer - Technical Working Group (TT-TWG). This pioneering group is tasked with crafting comprehensive Business, Marketing, and Financial Plans for five (5) SLSU-developed technologies that are in the pipeline for commercialization through Direct Licensing and Spin-Off initiatives. The establishment of the TT-TWG operationalizes the 2023 Technology Transfer Protocol (TTP), approved under Board of Regents (BOR) Resolution No. 84, series of 2023, which mandates the formation of a TT-TWG for each intellectual property (IP) filed by the university. This group will conduct feasibility studies and devise strategic marketing frameworks to ensure the successful commercialization of SLSU technologies.

By virtue of Special Order No. 81, series of 2025 issued by the Office of the President, the TT-TWG is composed of esteemed faculty members from the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA), namely: (1) Dr. Jeremiah P. Elloso, (2) Dr. Jennifer Edytha J. Lagrazon, (3) Dr. Resty P. Umali, (4) Dr. Gerald G. Gutierrez, (5) Dr. Manilyn G. Zubieta, and (6) Assistant Professor Loretta P. Arroyo.

These experts are set to drive SLSU towards a stronger innovation ecosystem by ensuring that technology commercialization efforts translate into tangible economic and societal benefits. Their expertise will serve as a catalyst for SLSU’s transformation into a commercialization-driven institution committed to making a lasting impact on the community through its developed technologies.

As part of its mandate, the TT-TWG will initially focus on crafting commercialization strategies for three (3) high-potential SLSU-developed technologies which include the Mushroom Chili Garlic Sauce, the Mazapan con Mushroom, and the Mushroom Oatmeal Cookies.

The formation of the TT-TWG represents a groundbreaking step in SLSU’s technology transfer and commercialization journey. As the TT-TWG advances its initiatives, SLSU envisions the establishment of a more structured, strategic, and innovation-driven technology transfer framework. Through this pioneering effort, SLSU reaffirms its commitment to fostering a dynamic entrepreneurial culture that translates scientific advancements into economic opportunities and societal benefits.
