SLSU launches Huntahan 2025, tackles research methods and publishing

LUCBAN, Quezon – Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) faculty members recently joined the first installment of this year’s Huntahan: The SLSU International Research Seminar Series themed "From Inquiry to Impact: Advanced Skills in Research Methods and Publishing," February 5 to 7.

“At the heart of impactful research is a solid design.” This statement, from SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa’s message during the Huntahan opening ceremony, highlighted the critical role of methodology in research. Dr. Villa emphasized that choosing a research approach is more than a technicality; it reflects the researcher’s core questions, desired answers, and intended impact. He was joined at the opening program by key university officials, including Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, Officer-in-Charge, Office of the Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation, and Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director, Office of Research Services (ORS).

The three-day session aimed to keep SLSU faculty abreast of evolving skills and best practices in research, with featured resource persons from Cagayan State University (CSU) Andrews Campus. Dr. Alma B. Manera, Professor IV specializing in Social Studies and Language Education, led the first day’s masterclass on research publishing. Her talk covered topics ranging from navigating Scopus and Web of Science-indexed databases to preparing manuscripts for reputable publishers like Elsevier, IGI, SRRN, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and IEEE. Dr. Manera also provided insights into the journal and publisher publication process.

The opening day drew 131 attendees, with 56 participating in person and 75 online. Since the online sessions were open to the public, participants included researchers and other interested individuals from agencies outside SLSU, such as DepEd Central Office, Cavite State University, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Day two focused on research design, with Dr. Apolinaria D. Andres, Professor IV specializing in Mathematics and Educational Management, leading the morning session on quantitative research design. Her talk covered the principles, processes, and designs of quantitative research, including measurement tools, data collection methods, statistical techniques, and ethical considerations. Dr. Andres also highlighted the importance of citation styles and provided guidance on using citation management tools.

The afternoon session on day two featured Dr. Rudolf T. Vecaldo, Professor VI specializing in Social Studies and Educational Management. Dr. Vecaldo’s keynote provided a deep dive into qualitative research design, from formulating effective open-ended questions to conducting impactful conversations and using thematic analysis. Additionally, he shared insights into what peer reviewers look for in submitted journal articles.

Interactive Q&A sessions were held on the first two days, allowing participants to seek clarifications and engage directly with the guest experts.

The final day shifted to a mentorship format, true to the spirit of “Huntahan” (a conversation). Participants consulted with the resource persons on their research proposals, completed research, and other related work.

Huntahan remains an initiative for faculty and staff development, offering expert-led discussions that support research excellence and career growth. Building on the success of this initial event, the ORS will host further Huntahan seminars throughout 2025. SLSU partners with UPLB-OIDHE for training on impact assessment of extension projects

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baños - Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education (UPLB-OIDHE), conducted a three-day training program from November 6 to 8 aimed at equipping faculty and staff with essential skills for assessing the impact of extension projects

The primary goal of the training was to capacitate the SLSU faculty and staff with ability to conduct impact assessments on extension programs and to build a multidisciplinary team that will spearhead evaluations for completed projects. By developing this in-house expertise, SLSU aims to gain valuable feedback on how its extension initiatives benefit the communities it serves, enabling continuous improvement to further address the needs of the community.

The training featured distinguished resources persons, including Dr. Hadji C. Jalotjot and Mr. Francis John F. Faderogao from the UPLB Center for Strategic Planning and Policy Studies, College of Public Affairs and Development; Dr. Nancy A. Tandang, Director of the UPLB Institute of Statistics, College of Arts and Sciences; Ms. Samantha Geraldine G. De los Santos from the UPLB Institute for Governance and Rural Development, College of Public Affairs and Development; Dr. Andrew Gasmen from the UPLB Agricultural Systems Institute, College of Agriculture and Food Science; and Dr. Emilia S. Visco from the Department of Social Development Services, College of Human Ecology.

The comprehensive training covered topics such as Foundations, Theories, and Principles of Impact Assessment; Measurements and Indicators; Tools and Methods for Impact Assessment (Quantitative and Qualitative); Agriculture Extension Projects Impact Assessment; and, Best Practices and Challenges in Extension and Public Service Impact Assessment. These areas are crucial not only for measuring the immediate effects of the university’s extension projects but also for capturing their long-term impacts on the community.

This initiative reflects SLSU’s dedication to delivering quality extension services with a sustainable community impact. The skills acquired through the training will enable the university to design, assess, and enhance its extension programs effectively.

Peñaojas keeps the torch ablaze in the International Research and Extension Forum

Ms. Jovela I. Peñaojas, faculty researcher of Southern Luzon State Univeristy (SLSU) - College of Teacher Education (CTE) won the 1st Place in the Best Paper and 2nd Place in the Best Oral Presenter under Quality Education - Research Category at the 2024 International Multidisciplinary Research and Extension Advocacy Conference for Champions of Change (IMREACH), October 10 to 11.

Ms. Jovela’s paper titled “Mediating Effect of Experiential Learning on Efficacy Belief and Blended Teaching Readiness Among Pre-service Science Teachers” is co-authored with Dr. Brando C. Palomar of Philippine Normal University – Manila.

Their paper aimed to determine the quantitative and qualitative interrelationships among the teaching attributes of pre-service teachers. The result of the study is a significant input to consider for Teacher Education Institutions in curriculum planning and mapping.

IMREACH, a conference organized by the University of Rizal System, provides opportunities to widen prospects, strengthen partnerships, and gain knowledge through innovative and scaled-up initiatives for more empowered communities. This year’s conference aimed to highlight the importance of research and extension internalization, provide a platform on service learning, address global sustainability challenges, and promote multidisciplinary approaches in research and extension undertakings.

SLSU supports Alumni Federation’s Grand Alumni Homecoming 2024

SLSU-Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) coordinated with SLSU Alumni Federation, Inc. (SLSUAFI) for the Grand Alumni Homecoming on August 3, 2024 at the university gymnasium. SLSU-OIAA served as chair of the search committee on the outstanding alumni while SLSUAFI Vice-President Dr. Armando A. Jasul acted as the overall chair.

The previous engagements of the Federation were highlighted by BOD Member Mr. Gerald Escleta through a milestone presentation. An inclusive plans and programs for SLSU alumni was presented by SLSUAFI President Mr. Benson Del Valle. As the homecoming is held in celebration with the university’s 60^th founding anniversary, the proposed new vision, mission and goals for SLSU was also disseminated by VP-REPDI Dr. Marissa C. Esperal.

SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa represented by OIC VP-AFA Dr. Arvin Natividad and Engr. Renante Abuyan on behalf of Lucban Mayor Agustin Villaverde graced the said occasion, both extending support to SLSU Alumni. The alumni homecoming, attended by graduates of different programs and batches, had been an excellent opportunity to reconnect with people who played a significant role in their academic journey, a great way to reminisce those fond memories, and even created a new connection with other alumni.

Hon. Nelson continues the Licup Legacy as BOR Private Sector Rep.

Hon. Nelson C. Licup took oath as the representative of the private sector of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Board of Regents (BOR) on Oct. 17, 2023.

Although it is the first time that Hon. Nelson sits as a part of the BOR; he has been helping SLSU in various ways. To continue the legacy of his father, the late Dr. Roberto C. Licup, Sr., Hon. Nelson donated the following: (1) Php 500,000.00 to support the establishment of the treatment and disposal of toxic waste generated by the BS Radiologic Technology program; and (2) Php 500,000.00 to augment the budget for the purchase of land for the SLSU Main Campus Annex in Brgy. Piis, Lucban, Quezon. Hon. Nelson provided financial assistance to (1) the poor and deserving students under the scholarship program of the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), (2) the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) personnel who are pursuing MBAs at SLSU, and (3) the doctors of the to-be-instituted College of Medicine who will pursue a Master in Public Health Education as required by the CHED Technical Working Group. He also sponsored the CABHA-JPIA project, “Padayon,” which aims to generate funds to upgrade the quality of education in the BS Accountancy program and to incentivize students who will top the CPA Licensure Examination.

Moreover, Hon. Nelson sponsored various events at SLSU Main and SLSU Tiaong.

With his unwavering assistance, Hon. Nelson was awarded as a major benefactor of SLSU during the PRAISE Awards in 2019.

CGO Tayabas donates 2-Storey Academic Building to SLSU

In a significant move to shore up educational infrastructure and enhancing the quality of education in the region, the City Government of (CGO) Tayabas has officially turned over a newly constructed 2-storey academic building to Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), October 30.

The new building, valued at nearly PhP 16 million, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide a conducive learning environment for students. The building includes modern classrooms, laboratories, and faculty offices, all intended to support the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

Mayor Maria Lourdes “Lovely” Reynoso-Pontioso, who led the turnover ceremony, highlighted the importance of investing in education for the future of the community.

SLSU OES, EA host Mental Health Session and Outreach Program for elementary students and parents

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Office of Extension Services (OES) and the Employees Association (EA) successfully held a mental health awareness seminar and outreach activity at Paaralang Elementarya ng Nakal for students and their parents, October 29.

The event received warm welcome from Ms. Mary Rose C. Estrabo, Head Teacher III at Paaralang Elementarya ng Nakal in Lucban, Quezon, as well as from faculty members, parents, and students who greeted the visting SLSU EA officers and OES staff.

Dr. Bernardita E. Brillon, a faculty member from the College of Allied Medicine (CAM), presented an insightful lecture on mental health. Her discussion covered mental health fundamentals, potential causes of mental health challenges, and prevention strategies. Dr. Brillon actively engaged parents, teachers, and students, fostering an interactive learning experience.

Following the seminar, an outreach program included a gift-giving activity where students received hygiene kits to support daily routines. Additionally, a group dance activity encouraged students to appreciate the mental and physical health benefits of exercise.

The event was spearheaded by SLSU EA President Ms. Emma O. Reyes, in collaboration with the Office of Extension Services, headed by Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., as part of this year’s university celebration of Kawani Day.

KALAHI Program Provides Cash Assistance to 213 SLSU Beneficiaries

The program, KALAHI-CIDSS (Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan—Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services), conducted a cash payout for 213 student and alumni beneficiaries on October 30.

During the event, the President of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), Dr. Frederick T. Villa, highlighted how the program helped the students in their studies through financial aid. Further stating that KALAHI-CCIDDS is a good investment program of the government in helping the students and alumni and in uplifting the country’s economy, which was supported by the statement of Mr. Nelson P. Robles, Regional Project Coordinator.

Ms. Charrie Rago, Senator Imee R. Marcos’ First District Spokesperson, assured that the senator would continue supporting SLSU.

Asst. Prof. Aurelio Teodoro Maguyon III, Dean of the SLSU Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), expressed his gratitude to the program implementers and beneficiaries, acknowledging their vital role in providing better services. Moreover, Dr. Arvin N. Natividad testified to the significant contribution of the KALAHI-CIDSS beneficiaries in university offices, emphasizing gratitude for the program. Several beneficiaries also expressed their appreciation.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Gino Cabrera discussed career planning among the beneficiaries, sharing tips on landing a job.

Assoc. Prof. Julieta A. Lindo, Head of the Career and Job Placement Services of OSAS, formally closed the program.

The cash assistance given to each beneficiary depended on the hours they assisted the various offices of SLSU.

Since November 2023, the program has benefited 853 SLSU students and alumni.

SLSU Pres Urges New Student Leaders to Set the Bar High

During the oath-taking ceremony of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Supreme Student Council Federation (SSCF), University President Dr. Frederick T. Villa inspired SSCF President, Hon. Izza Mae B. de Guzman, and the newly elected SSCF officials and representatives to set a strong example for the student body.

Dr. Villa emphasized the importance of balancing academic commitments with their leadership roles, encouraging them to remain dedicated to both.

He expressed his hope that each council member not only graduates on time but also excels in their roles, cultivating a culture of leadership, dedication, and integrity within the university community.

Dr. Villa presided the oath-taking during the flag-raising ceremony of SLSU on October 28.

SLSU Honors Green Rangers for 2024 STRASUC Olympic Performance

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) proudly recognized its athletes and coaches for their remarkable participation in the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC) Olympics held last October 21 to 25 at Puerto Princesa City.

SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, together with the University officials, faculty members, staff, and students celebrated the outstanding achievements of the 119 Green Rangers, who demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition.

The SLSU contingent finished 7th among 11 participating state universities and colleges, amassing an impressive total of 23 gold, 50 silver, and 45 bronze medals.

During the flag-raising ceremony held on October 28, Sports Coordinator Prof. Sonia Abustan took the opportunity to commend each winning athlete and their coaches for their dedication and hard work in representing SLSU with pride.
