SLSU supports Alumni Federation’s Grand Alumni Homecoming 2024

SLSU-Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) coordinated with SLSU Alumni Federation, Inc. (SLSUAFI) for the Grand Alumni Homecoming on August 3, 2024 at the university gymnasium. SLSU-OIAA served as chair of the search committee on the outstanding alumni while SLSUAFI Vice-President Dr. Armando A. Jasul acted as the overall chair.

The previous engagements of the Federation were highlighted by BOD Member Mr. Gerald Escleta through a milestone presentation. An inclusive plans and programs for SLSU alumni was presented by SLSUAFI President Mr. Benson Del Valle. As the homecoming is held in celebration with the university’s 60^th founding anniversary, the proposed new vision, mission and goals for SLSU was also disseminated by VP-REPDI Dr. Marissa C. Esperal.

SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa represented by OIC VP-AFA Dr. Arvin Natividad and Engr. Renante Abuyan on behalf of Lucban Mayor Agustin Villaverde graced the said occasion, both extending support to SLSU Alumni. The alumni homecoming, attended by graduates of different programs and batches, had been an excellent opportunity to reconnect with people who played a significant role in their academic journey, a great way to reminisce those fond memories, and even created a new connection with other alumni.

Facilitation of Educational Visit with DBA Local and Foreign Students

A company visit to Open IT, Lucena City was facilitated on March 13, 2024, as part of the academic engagement for the foreign and local students of the Graduate School – Doctor of Business Administration program. The said company was tapped by the Director of Office of International and Alumni Affairs, DBA Program Chairperson and DBA 511 Multinational Management Professor Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano in coordination with the Officer-in-charge Dean of Graduate School Dr. Shiela M. Manzanilla. Attended by the DBA students Ms. Hoang Thi Du, Ms. Mai Diem Lan Huong, Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong, Mr. Nguyen Ngo Dang Khoi, Ms. Tu Mai Hoang Phi, Ms. Maricel S. Diala, Ms. Queenie Ann P. Pastores, Ms. Gezelle C. Nequinto, OIAA staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and student assistant Ms. Alyssa Ericka Terciano.

Open IT is a technology company that specializes in providing innovative IT solutions to businesses and help companies streamline their IT operations while improving the overall efficiency by offering a wide range of services, including network management, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and software development.

Presentations headed by the OpeniT Human Resource Management Head Mr. Eduardo Pagaduan, Jr. with staff Ms. Julienne Tolentino, Ms. Faye Flancia and Account Manager Mr. Jesse Valdez, sharing a brief background of the company and highlighting the software management solution, professional services and the importance of achieving license optimization goals providing the students and faculty an in-depth understanding of the IT company’s success and strategies employed to stay ahead of the industry trends. The company also shared their unique OpeniT care programs which focuses on making a positive impact in people’s lives through innovative hiring practices and donation of profits to charity organizations worldwide.

The visit provided the students with valuable insights into the company’s success story, the extent of its global business operation, the diversity of human workforce, and its commitment to social responsibility, inspiring them leading to the appreciation on the potentials of the technology sector.

On March 14, 2024, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs participated in the 17th Universityhood celebration of Southern Luzon State University. In support for the event, the OIAA Director and staff together with the foreign students of the PhD-EdM and DBA program joined the parade and the set of activities included in the universityhood. The Foreign students expressed their appreciation on being invited in the university celebration and actively participated in the "Palaro ng Lahi", volleyball, and Dance Competition.

SLSU-CABHA wraps up faculty training on International Business with CESO through a Culminating Activity

With the full support of the administration, SLSU - Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) in collaboration with Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) has successfully wrapped up the “Capability Enhancement on International Business for College of Administration, Business Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) Faculty with CESO” through a Culminating Activity held on September 1, 2022 via zoom. The event highlighted the learning insights of the faculty in the series of training session from July 14, 2022 anchored on CESO’s program on Accelerating Women Empowerment.

SLSU Head of Faculty and Staff Development Program Dr. Susana A. Salvacion formally opened the Culminating Activity by giving a warm welcome remark followed by the inspirational message by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes. Present in the said event are the Dean of Graduate School (GS) Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee, faculty of CABHA and GS – DBA and MBA programs, OIAA staff, and CESO Project Officers – Mr. Vener Valerio and Mr. Erwin Altamarino. The synthesis of learning insights and appreciation were expressed by Prof. Rosemarie N. Gella and Prof. Jeremiah P. Elloso as one of the trainees. The closing remarks are delivered by Dr. Chona V. Cayabat – Dean of CABHA and Mr. Matt Navalta – CESO Country Representative, Philippines.

The faculty who was grouped into four, presented an export plan as the output of the training which were commended by CESO. Furthermore, the output can be disseminated and discussed to the concerned entities. This may serve as a rapid export assessment and can be coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) is privileged to be supported and complemented with talents of CESO in the goal of sustaining personnel development and competency level of teaching personnel through faculty training. This training on international business handled by a well-rounded CESO Advisor Mr. Aarij Bashir and the active participation of the trainees have made the objectives of the mentoring met–provision of technical training, updates on trends on international business operation, and uplifted entrepreneurial spirit.

SLSU welcomes Catalyste+ Advisor Mr. Gerry O’Connor: Empowering Business Students through Mentoring Program

SLSU – Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) welcomes the Catalyste+ Advisor Mr. Gerry O’Connor at Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) main campus in Lucban, Quezon, Philippines.

A campus tour was conducted on the first day of stay of Mr. O’Connor, where he was able to learn the laboratories and facilities particularly, the main library, Hospitality Management laboratory, College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA), Office of Students Affairs and Services (OSAS), Administration building, and College of Allied Medicine (CAM). The campus tour was hosted by the OIAA through Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, assisted by OIAA staff: Ms. Jeannet Cosejo, Mr. Dexter Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra Racelis, and in coordination with the respective colleges.

OIAA facilitated a recognition program for Mr. O’Connor who extensively shared his expertise and stimulated the students’ entrepreneurial spirit. Dr. Verano formally opened the program by giving a warm welcome remarks followed by the appreciation message by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, and Dean of CABHA Dr. Chona V. Cayabat. Present in the said event are the faculty of CABHA and the participants including the group of business students who won the “Best Business Plan” during the mentoring sessions.

The faculty and students expressed their appreciation to Mr. O’Connor, to Catalyste+, and to the university for providing them an international and industry perspective on enterprise development through the implementation of “Empowering Business Students through Mentoring ” program.

The successful implementation of the mentoring program provided the students with a wonderful learning experience. Mr. O’Connor admired the faculty, staff, officials, and the students with their support and cooperation in the execution of the projects and programs of SLSU with Catalyste+ towards achieving the common goal of providing a quality education for the students. The closing remarks were delivered by the Project Officer of Catalyste+ Mr. Erwin Altamarino.

SLSU is privileged to be supported by Catalyste+ in this endeavor, providing opportunities to cultivate and support build business community through the mentoring of students with the expertise of Catalyste+ advisors.

Accelerating Women Empowerment: Advancing Leadership Skills with DTI Business Counselors and Entrepreneurs in Quezon Province through Mentoring

Following the successful implementation of the mentorship program with Catalyste+, Canada with the graduate and undergraduate students of business administration and allied programs, and non-teaching staff of SLSU administrative offices, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) collaborated with the Department of Trade and Industry to expand the scope of the project including the business counselors, officers and selected entrepreneurs in Quezon province as initially discussed during the meeting with DTI Provincial Director Julieta Tadiosa along with DTI officers Ms. Anna Marie Quincina, Ms. Ma. Cristina Avio, Ms. Lani Constantino and Catalyste+ Project Officer Mr. Erwin Altamarino on August 14, 2023.

The primary objective of the mentoring project “Accelerating Women Empowerment of Business Students, Faculty, Staff and Business Counselors and Entrepreneurs through Mentoring – Part 3” is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of the counselors and entrepreneurs on leadership and management through the Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer, having a profound experience on business, management, and leadership as a senior executive board member, thought leader of various organizations, and an adjunct professor in the University of Toronto – Rotman School of Management.

The training session commenced on October 26, 2023 at Max’s Restaurant, Tayabas City, as facilitated by the OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano and staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra D. Racelis. Ms. Ana Marie Quincina, the Chief Trade and Industry Development Specialist, formally opened the event with a warm welcome remark followed by a brief overview of the mentorship program and introduction of the advisor delivered by Dr. Verano. DTI Provincial Director Ms. Tadiosa also expressed her appreciation to SLSU and to Catalyste+, Canada for making the program available to their organization and its clienteles.

On October 26, 2023, Dr. O’Dwyer conducted the training session on “Up YOUR Leadership Game” which focused on the following topics: 1) management system, 2) comprehensive framework for success, 3) a Harvard business review article on “What Makes and Effective Executive” by Peter Drucker, and 4) Getting It Done Tools. Participants were assigned individual and team tasks and had the opportunity sharing their answers and outputs.

To wrap up the mentoring session the participants shared a synthesis of learning which Dr. O’Dwyer appreciated. Certificate of Participation was given to business counselors / officers and entrepreneurs and the Certificate of Appreciation to DTI for co-organizing the mentoring session. DTI awarded Dr. O’Dwyer and the OIAA with a Certificate of Appreciation for extending the projects to their staff and clienteles. Mr. Erwin Altamarino, Catalyste+ Project Officer delivered the closing remarks expressing his appreciation for the collaborative efforts in facilitating the said project.

Unlocking the Potentials of SLSU Administrative Office Non-Teaching Staff through Mentoring

With the successful implementation of mentoring program with the graduate and undergraduate students of business administration and allied programs, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs in cooperation with Catalyste+, Canada had extended the program for the non-teaching personnel of Southern Luzon State University – Administrative Offices. The “Accelerating Women Empowerment of Business Students, Faculty, Staff and Business Counselors and Entrepreneurs through Mentoring – Part 3” was successfully executed in coordination with the Gender and Development Office, Human Resource Management Office – Faculty and Staff Development Program and Management Information System.

The mentoring session kicks off on October 24, 2023. OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano facilitated the opening of the program by providing a background on the mentoring program, followed by a warm welcome remark from the Vice-President of Administrative and Financial Affairs Dr. Frederick T. Villa. OIC-President Dr. Nilo H. Dator gave an inspirational message and encouraged the non-teaching staff to actively participate in the mentoring sessions, highlighting the opportunity in preparing for the next generation of leaders in the organization. It was then followed by a formal introduction of the Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer.

Dr. O’Dwyer presented the “Getting it Done Management System”, specifically on the following tools: insights/impact, courage, effective decision-making, buy-in decisions, ownership grid, team action plan. The participants were grouped into four and were asked to participate in individual and team tasks as administered for the topic application. A total of 3 sessions were facilitated in which the participants appreciated and confirmed the usefulness of the GID tools.

On October 25, 2023, a culminating activity was facilitated. Representatives of each team shared a synthesis of learning which Dr. O’Dwyer appreciated. Certificate of Completion was awarded to the participants by SLSU-OIAA, Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. O’Dwyer and Chief Admin. Officer (CAO) Dr. Erwin D. Villaverde. CAO Dr. Villaverde delivered the closing remark, extending thanks to the international partner - Catalyste+, Canada and the Office of International and Alumni Affairs for conducting mentoring program to the non-teaching staff, providing a wonderful learning opportunity.

Graduate School DBA and MBA students completes mentoring program with Catalyste+, Canada

With the successful implementation of the mentoring program in 2022 with the Graduate School – Doctor of Business Administration and Master in Business Administration, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs in coordination with the Graduate School and Gender and Development Office, replicated and facilitated a series of mentoring sessions through a hybrid set-up which aimed to empower the students and enhance their entrepreneurial and business skills.

The first mentoring session was held on September 30, 2023 via Zoom platform, preliminaries was facilitated by OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano and staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra D. Racelis, where Dean of CABHA Dr. Chona V. Cayabat, formally opened the program with a warm welcome remark and shared how the mentors play a crucial role in the success of the students, followed by words of inspiration from the Dean of Graduate School Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee. Dr. Verano briefly discussed the objectives of the mentoring program and introduced the Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer.

On October 20, 2023, the delegations from Catalyste+ arrived at SLSU Main Campus, Lucban, Quezon for the facilitation of the face-to-face mentoring sessions. The Catalyste+ Advisor met with the GS faculty and students on October 21, 2023 for the continuation of the mentoring program.

The Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer paid a courtesy visit to SLSU officials starting with the Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, Dean of CABHA Dr. Cayabat, and the Head of Gender and Development Office Dr. Leomar C. Miano. A campus tour was also facilitated where Dr. O’Dwyer had the opportunity to learn and visit the facilities of SLSU, specifically the following offices: College of Allied Medicine, College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy, SLSU Gymnasium and University Library.

The mentoring program finishes off with a Culminating Activity, hosted by Dr. Verano. OIAA prepared an AVP on the proceedings of the mentoring with Catalyste+, Canada. CABHA Dean Dr. Cayabat and GS Dean Dr. Lee gave an inspirational message, appreciating the Catalyste+ through CA Dr. O’Dwyer in providing an insightful mentoring to the GS students of SLSU and to OIAA as well for organizing such program, and reiterating to the students the wonderful opportunity they had with the program. Synthesis of learning from the student was shared, acknowledging Dr. O’Dwyers generosity in sharing his expertise and confirming on the topics they learned from the series of mentoring and application of the insights at their respective workplaces. A Certificate of Participation to the students and faculty and a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. John O’Dwyer were awarded as a gesture of acknowledgment in completing and facilitating the mentoring sessions. Closing remarks was delivered by GAD Head Dr. Miano. Evaluation on the mentoring sessions via QR code and a photo opportunity with Dr. O’Dwyer were facilitated afterwards. Indeed, the Part 3 of mentoring program with the Graduate School Business Administration students and faculty was another productive undertaking with the SLSU’s international partner, Catalyste+, Canada.

SLSU Receives Award as 3-Stars Institution

A 3 Star overall rating was awarded to Southern Luzon State University on September 27, 2023 by the Intelligence Unit of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a company that specializes in the analytics and insights of higher education institution worldwide. Specifically, SLSU got 3 Stars on academic growth and business management studies, 4 Stars on teaching, facilities, social responsibility, and inclusiveness, and 5 Stars on employability criteria.

The QS Stars assessment is spearheaded by the Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) under the “SLSU Scaling up towards Internationalization” project funded by CHED-IAS program on “Fostering World-Class Philippine Universities which incentivizes educational institutions’ best practices and initiatives on internationalization. The completion of this project was made possible through the working committee headed by OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano and staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra D. Racelis, and supported by the administration with the former University President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes, Vice-President of Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, Vice-President for Administrative and Financial Affairs Dr. Frederick T. Villa, Vice-President for Research, Extension, Production, Development and Innovation Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, through the support of the Office of Quality Assurance led by Dr. Gillian Portia Dimaranan, and the MIS team headed by Prof. Reynaldo Danganan and staff – Mr. Jayven Villanueva, Ms. Ana May Leobrera and Mr. Reniel Domirez, and the rest of the committee.

As SLSU celebrates its remarkable achievement, the university upholds it values and commitment in developing a sustained culture of delivering quality services and interdisciplinary innovations in instruction, research and extension that are anchored on the regional, national and development goals. With the QS Stars, the institution will now be recognized globally. Likewise, the strengths of the university were determined which will serve as input to strategy review and resource alignment as QS Stars assessment was conducted across a wide range of criteria that are based in global standards and practices.
