“SLSU Research at a Glance” is an annual publication by the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), Lucban, Quezon Province, Philippines in coordination with Knowledge Management Office and Office of Research Services. This publication provides regular updates on the significant research and development (R&D) accomplishments of the university, demonstrating its commitment to contributing to knowledge and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Regional RDE Agenda. It serves as a platform to share knowledge, encourage collaboration, and inspire aspiring researchers.

SLSU launches Huntahan 2025, tackles research methods and publishing

LUCBAN, Quezon – Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) faculty members recently joined the first installment of this year’s Huntahan: The SLSU International Research Seminar Series themed "From Inquiry to Impact: Advanced Skills in Research Methods and Publishing," February 5 to 7.

“At the heart of impactful research is a solid design.” This statement, from SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa’s message during the Huntahan opening ceremony, highlighted the critical role of methodology in research. Dr. Villa emphasized that choosing a research approach is more than a technicality; it reflects the researcher’s core questions, desired answers, and intended impact. He was joined at the opening program by key university officials, including Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, Officer-in-Charge, Office of the Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation, and Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director, Office of Research Services (ORS).

The three-day session aimed to keep SLSU faculty abreast of evolving skills and best practices in research, with featured resource persons from Cagayan State University (CSU) Andrews Campus. Dr. Alma B. Manera, Professor IV specializing in Social Studies and Language Education, led the first day’s masterclass on research publishing. Her talk covered topics ranging from navigating Scopus and Web of Science-indexed databases to preparing manuscripts for reputable publishers like Elsevier, IGI, SRRN, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and IEEE. Dr. Manera also provided insights into the journal and publisher publication process.

The opening day drew 131 attendees, with 56 participating in person and 75 online. Since the online sessions were open to the public, participants included researchers and other interested individuals from agencies outside SLSU, such as DepEd Central Office, Cavite State University, and the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Day two focused on research design, with Dr. Apolinaria D. Andres, Professor IV specializing in Mathematics and Educational Management, leading the morning session on quantitative research design. Her talk covered the principles, processes, and designs of quantitative research, including measurement tools, data collection methods, statistical techniques, and ethical considerations. Dr. Andres also highlighted the importance of citation styles and provided guidance on using citation management tools.

The afternoon session on day two featured Dr. Rudolf T. Vecaldo, Professor VI specializing in Social Studies and Educational Management. Dr. Vecaldo’s keynote provided a deep dive into qualitative research design, from formulating effective open-ended questions to conducting impactful conversations and using thematic analysis. Additionally, he shared insights into what peer reviewers look for in submitted journal articles.

Interactive Q&A sessions were held on the first two days, allowing participants to seek clarifications and engage directly with the guest experts.

The final day shifted to a mentorship format, true to the spirit of “Huntahan” (a conversation). Participants consulted with the resource persons on their research proposals, completed research, and other related work.

Huntahan remains an initiative for faculty and staff development, offering expert-led discussions that support research excellence and career growth. Building on the success of this initial event, the ORS will host further Huntahan seminars throughout 2025. SLSU eyes national accreditation for its clonal nursery

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its Office of Production Services (OPS), engaged in a two-day training and field exposure program for its farm workers and staff from September 26 to 27, focusing on the enhancements needed to secure national accreditation for its clonal nursery.

The training featured presentations by experts from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI): Ernie Lito Y. Bollosa, Eleo B. Lunas, and Juvinile C. Malbas. They provided detailed insights into the accreditation process, including the necessary documentation, operational standards, and regulatory frameworks. These processes ensure that accredited nurseries shall produce high-quality, pest-free planting materials in compliance with national agricultural policies.

On the second day, participants gained hands-on experience during a guided tour of BPI-accredited nurseries, including the Mother Tree Facility in Tiaong, Quezon, and Jann Emerein Enterprise in San Pablo. The tour concluded at the Bureau of Plant Industry’s main facility in Manila.

Throughout the tour, BPI experts led discussions on key practices such as seedling propagation, pest management, and quality control, emphasizing how these could be applied at SLSU’s nursery.

Under the management of OPS Director, Forester Eraldwin Dimailig, SLSU operates a state-of-the-art clonal nursery, specializing in species like batikuling (Litsea leytensis) and makaasim (Syzygium nitidum). With continued collaboration with BPI, SLSU aims to achieve accreditation, setting a standard for nursery management and plant production in the region.

SLSU researchers bag best paper awards at an international research conference

Two conference papers from Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) were hailed as best in the recently concluded International Conference on Science, Technology, and AI Applications (ICSTAA) 2024 hosted by the Marinduque State University (MSU) in hybrid format, September 26-27.

Dr. Renato R. Maaliw, III, Professor at the SLSU College of Engineering, won the Best Paper Award in the Engineering & Technology Category for his winning paper titled “SCOLIONET: An Automated Scoliosis Cobb Angle Quantification Using Enhanced X-ray Images and Deep Learning Models.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Luis Miguel P. Saludez, an Associate Professor at the SLSU College of Teacher Education, along with students, Arabela S. Samarita, Jhayzelle Anne Roperez, and Julie Anne Navarro, won the Best Research Paper Award in the Education Category for their study, “Systematic Review on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in English Language Pedagogy.”

ICSTAA 2024 is a conference that aims to provide extraordinary opportunities to expand knowledge, network with global professionals, and explore how AI and technology are transforming education, research, and industry.

As recipients of the University’s Research Presentation Assistance, the winning SLSU representatives will also be entitled to best paper incentives by the end of the year based on the University’s BOR-approved Research Productivity Assistance and Incentives Scheme. This recognition underscores the administration’s commitment to academic and research excellence.

The Office of Research Services (ORS) conducted a hybrid meeting to welcome the newly-designated and re-appointed Research Coordinators. The meeting also served as an avenue to provide an overview of their expected deliverables.

Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation, and Dr. Cherry C. Favor, REPS Assistant Director of SLSU JGE Tagkawayan Campus, were also acknowledged for their presence.

Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, ORS Director, discussed the roles and responsibilities of the Research Coordinators and emphasized the University’s research targets, particularly areas that need attention to qualify as a State University and College (SUC) Level IV. He appealed for the Coordinators’ full support to achieve these goals.

Ms. April Arianne A. de Leon, ORS Education Program Specialist, presented SLSU’s recent research milestones and stressed the importance of timely submission of required reports, which are regularly being submitted for information of the Board of Regents and other requesting parties. She also highlighted the services and incentives available to SLSU researchers through ORS.

Ms. Jillian H. Bautista, ORS Science Research Assistant, discussed the financial and physical monitoring of funded research projects. She urged the Research Coordinators to remind faculty researchers of the timely submission of progress reports, a prerequisite for entitlement to Equivalent Teaching Load.

During the open forum, participants discussed several topics, including thesis title reviews and the format of undergraduate research. Key matters were noted for action.

The hybrid meeting was held on September 9, 2024, at the REPDI Training Center, REPDI Building, Southern Luzon State University, Lucban, Quezon.

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), held a “Huntahan Seminar Series” focusing on creative works, featuring a free film workshop led by multi-awarded filmmaker Director Elvert Bañares. The workshop took place from September 3-4, 2024, at the REPDI Training Center, SLSU, Lucban, Quezon.

The opening program was facilitated by Ms. Heshell S. Ellaga, Research Coordinator of SLSU Tiaong. Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, SLSU Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation, welcomed participants, followed by a message of support from SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, read by Dr. Esperal. Dr. Villa highlighted SLSU’s dedication to creating opportunities that enhance individual endeavors, whether in academics, research, or artistic expression. Demonstrating his full support, Dr. Villa personally visited the venue after attending to other university matters to greet the guests and participants.

Ms. Jeanne Melissa R. Severo, PAVB Coordinating Committee Representative from NCCA, provided an overview of the creation and impact of the Philippine Pavilion’s “Sa Kabila ng Tabing Lamang sa Panahong Ito / Waiting Just Behind the Curtain of This Age” exhibition, a work by Lucban-born, world-renowned artist Sir Mark Salvatus, curated by Sir Carlos Quijon Jr. for the 60th Venice Art Biennale 2024. The Public Program component of this exhibition laid the foundation for the partnership between SLSU and NCCA.

Director Bañares led an engaging workshop on film production, emphasizing visual design and cinematography techniques. He encouraged participants to explore diverse storytelling methods and genres by presenting samples of works from his former students, other artists, and his own projects. He also conducted a live demonstration on how to manipulate lighting to create desired tones and emotions in film.

By the end of the first day, participants showcased their video productions, interpreting the poems of Rio Alma, including “Ugaling Pulubi,” “Demonyo,” “Pag-uwi,” and “Bagong Daedalus.” Director Bañares commended the participants for their impressive outputs, especially given that many were new to filmmaking.

On the second day, Director Bañares delivered a lecture on film editing and demonstrated effective techniques using Adobe Premiere Pro. He then tasked participants with creating and editing a 1-minute creative film, either individually or in pairs. The final outputs were presented later in the day, and Director Bañares expressed pride in the participants’ creativity and their ability to apply what they had learned.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director of the SLSU Office of Research Services, expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations with NCCA to further develop the creative talents of SLSU’s faculty and staff, in line with the university’s mandate under the new SUC Levelling Instrument Key Result Area 3. Despite being shortened from three days to two due to Typhoon Enteng, the workshop was highly appreciated by participants, who demonstrated their engagement and new skills through commendable outputs.

Before concluding the workshop, Director Bañares inspired participants to promote Filipino culture and the arts through film by screening his work, “Sa Paglupad Ka Banog” (The Flight of Banog), an official entry in the ongoing Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival 2024.

JSTOR access now available for SLSU faculty and students

To enhance its support for SLSU researchers, the University has secured access to JSTOR, a comprehensive digital library offering a wide range of academic content. This includes top peer-reviewed journals, literary magazines, academic books, research reports, and primary sources across various disciplines. The SLSU Office of Research Services will issue a memo with detailed instructions on accessing JSTOR and outlining its terms of use for faculty and students.

SLSU’s access to JSTOR was made possible through funding from the 2024 GAA-Capacity Development on Futures Thinking & Strategic Foresight for the BOR-approved research entitled “Rethinking a State University’s R&D Agenda for 2024-2028: Research Strength, Needs, Thrusts, and Priorities” (Principal Investigator: April Arianne De Leon; Co-Investigators: Jean Venelie Raga, Jillian Bautista, Giehway Liwanag).

Thailand’s Kasetsart University (KU) and Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) have entered into a partnership to foster academic and research collaboration. The ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place at KU's Bangkok Campus on August 29, 2024.

This partnership will focus on various areas of collaboration, including joint research activities, publications, extension programs and projects, the exchange of faculty members and students for study, internships, teaching, and research, as well as invitations to scholars to participate in conferences, lectures, and seminars. Additionally, it will promote library, cultural, and other academic exchanges of mutual interest.

Representing SLSU at the MoU signing were Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation, and Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Director of the Office of Research Services, on behalf of President Frederick T. Villa. Kasetsart University was represented by Professor Dr. Dokrak Marod, Vice President for Research and Internationalization.

The MoU signing coincided with the official visit of representatives from the Southern Tagalog Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research, Development and Extension Consortium (STAARRDEC) Member Institutions, including SLSU, to various research institutes and centers within Kasetsart University. The visit aimed to explore best practices and discuss potential avenues for future collaboration.

The MoU will be submitted to the SLSU Board of Regents for approval. Once approved, it will pave the way for SLSU to actively engage with Kasetsart University.

Malugod na tinanggap ng Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) ang mga delegasyon mula sa MaryHill College, Inc., Lucena City, at Cavite State University – Tanza Campus para sa isang Lakbay-Aral na nakatuon sa mga isinasagawang pagpapaunlad ng Unibersidad sa mga serbisyong akademiko, pananaliksik, at extensyon. Ang aktibidad ay naganap noong Agosto 15 sa REPDI Training Hall, REPDI Building, SLSU, Lucban, Quezon.

Ipinahayag ni Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Bise-Presidente ng SLSU para sa Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI), ang kanyang pasasalamat sa mga bumisitang delegasyon sa pagpili sa SLSU bilang destinasyon para sa Lakbay-Aral. Binanggit niya na ang pagbisitang ito ay sumasalamin sa lumalaking pagkilala sa mga ambag ng SLSU sa larangan ng akademiko at agham.

Kasama sa programa ang pagpapanuod ng isang presentasyon na nagbigay sa mga bisita ng ideya sa mga pag-unlad na naganap sa SLSU noong mga nakaraang taon hanggang umabot na ito sa ika-60 anibersaryo ng pagkakatatag nito. Kasunod nito, ipinakilala ni Asst. Prof. Percival Verano, Direktor para sa Instruction, ang mga miyembro ng SLSU Administrative Council at ibinahagi ang mga gawaing sinimulan ng kanyang opisina, partikular na yaong nagbigay ng malaking epekto sa pagtaas ng resulta ng mga licensure examination ng mga mag-aaral ng Unibersidad.

Sa larangan ng pananaliksik, tinalakay ni Ms. April Arianne A. de Leon, Education Program Specialist ng Office of Research Services (ORS), ang mga tungkulin ng kanilang opisina, kabilang ang mga serbisyo, insentibo, at parangal na ibinibigay sa mga mananaliksik ng SLSU. Dagdag pa rito, pinahayag ni Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, Direktor ng ORS, ang mga naisakatuparan sa pananaliksik na nakamit dahil sa pagpapatupad ng mga programang nabanggit. Ipinakita rin niya ang mga pasilidad para sa pananaliksik ng SLSU, kabilang ang mga kasalukuyang itinatayo pa lamang.

Ibinahagi rin ni Ms. Jaquelyn D. Merjudio, Project Development Officer ng Office of Extension Services (OES), ang mga programa, proyekto, at mga natatanging tagumpay ng OES sa nakalipas na mga taon, na nagbibigay-diin sa mga mahuhusay na estratehiya na kanilang isinagawa upang mapasulong ang kanilang mga serbisyo.

Nagbahagi rin si Mr. Giehway R. Liwanag, Science Research Assistant ng Innovation and Technology Support Services Office, ng mga impormasyon tungkol sa mga pagsisikap ng unibersidad sa proteksyon ng intellectual property, pagbabahagi ng teknolohiya, at komersyalisasyon nito.

Samantala, namigay ang Office of Production Services sa mga bisita ng mga sampler na sabon na ginawa mula sa SLSU Sanitation Facility.

Natapos ang pagpupulong sa pagtanaw sa hinaharap sa posibilidad ng pagkakaroon ng kolaborasyong akademiko at pang-agham sa mga institusyong bumisita sa SLSU.

Kinilala ang mga mananaliksik mula sa Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) sa 7th Asia Future Conference (AFC), na inorganisa ng Sekiguchi Global Research Association (SGRA) sa pakikipagtulungan ng Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, Agosto 9 hanggang 13.
Pinangunahan ni Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr. ang grupo na nagwagi ng Best Paper Award para sa kanilang pag-aaral na pinamagatang "Factors Affecting Social Fencing Outcomes: The Case of Mounts Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape”.

Dagdag pa rito, napanalunan ni Dr. Kathreena E. Gutierrez ang Best Presentation Award para sa kanilang pananaliksik na “Species Distribution, Local Stewardship, and Economic Value of Batikuling (𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘴𝘦𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 Merr.) in the Province of Laguna and Quezon, Philippines”.

Samantala, kumatawan din sa SLSU si Dr. Mary Ann Agudilla na nagpresenta ng kanyang papel na “Domestic Water Users’ Preference for Improved Conservation of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban Watershed, Quezon, Philippines: Comparison of Contingent Valuation and Choice Experiment.”

Ang mga gurong-mananaliksik na ito mula sa SLSU College of Agriculture ay tumanggap ng tulong mula sa Unibersidad para sa kanilang internasyonal na presentasyon salig sa inaprobahan ng Board of Regents na “Research Productivity Assistance and Incentives Scheme” noong 2022.

Nagsilbing plataporma ang 7th AFC para sa mga iskolar at mananaliksik mula sa iba’t ibang disiplina sa buong mundo upang makilahok sa mga talakayan tungkol sa “revitalization” at makahanap ng kaukulang solusyon para sa Asya at sa buong mundo.
