SLSU conducts livelihood training on meat processing for Elementary School PTA Members

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) facilitated livelihood training on meat processing for the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members of Magallanes Elementary School, Lopez, Quezon, on November 15.

“Ang ganito pong Gawain ay magiging kapaki-pakinabang kung ating gagamitin,” (These endeavors will be beneficial if we put it to good use) Ms. Margarita B. Segui, Principal I of Magallanes Elementary School, said in her opening remarks. She encouraged parents to apply the skills and knowledge they would gain from the training to improve their quality of life.

Mr. Ryan A. Alcoreza, Project Technical Staff from SLSU’s Office of Extension Services, highlighted the longstanding partnership between the university and Magallanes Elementary School. He emphasized the positive impact of previous extension activities, which contributed to the school’s growth and development through the practical application of acquired knowledge.

Dr. Claire Ann M. Yao, a faculty member of the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA) led the training proper. She lectured on food safety and hygiene, underlining its critical importance in meat processing. This was followed by an in-depth discussion on preparing tocino, tapa, and longganisa, including the step-by-step procedures, essential ingredients, and techniques to enhance product quality.

Participants engaged in a hands-on activity. They were divided into four groups to process meat, tocino, tapa, and longganisa. Dr. Yao guided them throughout the activity, offering practical tips and pointers while encouraging each participant.

To further assist the attendees, Dr. Yao also discussed costing strategies, teaching participants how to calculate expenses and potential income. This session aimed to motivate parents to turn their newfound skills into viable livelihood opportunities.

Over 30 active members of the Magallanes Elementary School PTA attended the training, and they expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow.

Health and Wellness Leave: Supporting Employee Well-being at Southern Luzon State University

Regular employees of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) are entitled to five days of health and wellness leave annually, as stipulated in the Collective Negotiation Agreement (CNA) between SLSU, the SLSU Faculty Association, and the SLSU Employees Association (2023). This benefit is designed to prioritize the health and well-being of university personnel, allowing them to take time off to rest, recuperate, and attend to personal health needs without affecting their regular leave entitlements.

By providing this privilege, the university ensures that its employees are supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which in turn helps improve overall productivity, job satisfaction, and employee morale. This health and wellness leave reflects SLSU’s commitment to fostering a positive and sustainable working environment where faculty and staff can thrive both professionally and personally.

Huntahan: The SLSU’s International Research Seminar Series

The Office of Research Services (ORS) held the Year 2 of the Huntahan: The SLSU’s International Research Seminar Series

On March 29, 2023 (Wednesday) at 9:00 in the morning (PHT), a Huntahan session was held via zoom and Facebook Live. The ORS had invited Dr. Janlo M. Robil to share his personal experiences that spanned multiple institutions and cultures, from his time as an undergraduate student in Lucban to earning his Ph.D. in Missouri. He discussed how these collective experiences had contributed to achieving his goals and continued to shape his values as a scientist, academic, and individual.

On April 3, 2023 (Monday) at 9:00 in the morning (PHT), a Huntahan session was held via ZOOM and Facebook Live. The ORS had invited Engr. Luis Joel T. Palamiano, For. Paulo V. Obico, & Ms. Pearl Iris U. Perez to elaborate on how the SLSU Center for Hazards and Environmental Resource Mapping (CHERM) could provide relevant environmental information to the public to help them in addressing different environmental problems. They highlighted the services that the Center provided in line with its vision of becoming a repository for printing Geographic Information System (GIS)-based maps and a provider of geospatial data and services for environmental and disaster risk management.

On April 17, 2023 (Monday) at 2:00 in the afternoon (PHT), a Huntahan session was held via ZOOM and Facebook Live. The ORS had invited Dr. Nicolo Paolo P. Ludovice, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Division of Environment and Sustainability, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to elaborate on the role of animals in the making of health and to convey a more inclusive understanding of history through a multispecies frame and the appreciation of health beyond the biomedical model.

Huntahan was a free webinar of the SLSU Office of Research Services that was open to the public. Certificates were given to all the registered participants who completed the event evaluation.

Empowering Communities through Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Initiatives

CAS "BEADS-ON-THE-GO": Opening New Livelihood Opportunities for Stay-at-Home Mothers

In a vibrant display of creativity, the College of Arts and Science (CAS) conducted an extension project titled "BEADS-On-The-Go: Create, Engage, Inspire." which took place on September 23, 2023, in Lucban, Quezon, showcasing the college's commitment to community engagement and the transformative power of art.

One of the flagship extension projects in College of Arts and Sciences is beads making. It started as a hobby among the CAS faculty members then later on it was shared to the community. This beads making has able to teach persons with disabilities (PWD), as well as mothers in different areas of Quezon.

The Gintong Kalinga Child Development Center (GKCDC), an organization that aims to give assistance and uplift the lives of members of the community in Lucban, Quezon, sought technical assistance from the CAS in bead making.

Ms. Clarell M. Salumbides, a beneficiary of the bead making extension project of CAS, assumed the role of trainer for the activity. Her discussion centered on her modest exploration in beads making, emphasizing how beads making she was able to provide for her son’s education. Meanwhile, Ms. Rosalyn Carneo discussed the materials which would be used during on beads making and demonstrated how to create keychains and images using beads.

The collaborative effort is held in Brgy, Nagsinamo, benefitting twenty (20) stay-at-home mothers who eagerly participated in the activity.

SLSU Empowers BP2 Villages with Comprehensive Entrepreneurial Training Program

In a bid to foster economic growth and empower residents of Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa (BP2) Villages in selected Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) within Quezon Province, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has successfully conducted a comprehensive training program. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Quezon I, covered key aspects of entrepreneurship and aimed to equip participants with essential skills for sustainable development.

Participants are trained in the following aspects, Marketing and Entrepreneurial Mindset; Leadership and Values Formation; Supply and Value Chain Management; Entrepreneurial Accounting and Financial Management; Product Development. In addition, participants are also trained on food processing including tomato sauce and tomato ketchup processing, and meat processing. The program, run from October to December 2023, washeld in the municipalities of Tiaong and Sariaya, Quezon, ensuring accessibility for participants from the targeted BP2 Villages.

Furthermore, a culminating activity is held on December 21-22, 2023 at Tagaytay, which is attended by ARCs of Sariaya and Dolores, Quezon. These activities is led by Dr. Leomar C. Miano, project leader together with Dr. Chona V. Cayabat, Dr. Felino J. Gutierez, Prof. Claire Ann M. Yao, Prof. Aurita A. Laguador, and Prof. Gino A. Cabrera, project members.

Southern Luzon State University Expands Clinical Affiliations in Quezon Province

In an effort to provide students with diverse clinical experiences close to home, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has announced the expansion of its affiliating institutions within Quezon Province. These partnerships will offer SLSU students unparalleled opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world healthcare settings throughout the local region.

The university has forged agreements with several other healthcare facilities in Quezon Province, including:

City Health Office Tayabas, located in Tayabas City
Rural Health Unit Lucban, located in Lucban, Quezon
Rural Health Unit Lying-in/Birthing Home, located in Lucban, Quezon
Lucena Medical Mission Group (MMG) Hospital, located in Lucena City
Lucena United Doctors Hospital and Medical Center Inc., located in Lucena City
Tayabas Community Hospital Inc., located in Tayabas City

QMC signs MOA for College of Medicine Base Hospital

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Quezon Medical Center (QMC) for the base hospital of the College of Medicine (COM), on Feb. 1, 2023.

Under the MOA, QMC allows the affiliation and training of the student clerks/medical interns of SLSU enrolled under the College of Medicine. Meanwhile, SLSU will be responsible for the medical education program, academic affairs, and assessment of the student clerks.

Currently, SLSU COM is still under institutionalization and is expected to operate this year, 2023.

SLSU CONDUCTED ITS ANNUAL PHYSICAL AND LABORATORY EXAMINATION OF REGULAR PERSONNEL 2023

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) in partnership with Healthline Medical Health Services (Manila) conducted its Annual Medical and Laboratory Examination for permanent and regular personnel on December 11-12, 2023 . All teaching and non-teaching employees participated in the examinations held at the SLSU Gymnasium and Covered Court in accordance to the UHS Memorandum No. 5, s. 2023.

SLSU Explores possible collaboration with Seymour Education & Learning Centres, Canadian Seniors Association and Hope Beacon Enterprises, Canada

On January 18, 2023, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) facilitated an exploratory meeting with Seymour Education & Learning Centres, Canadian Seniors Association and Hope Beacon Enterprises from Canada, to discuss for internationally educated nurses capacity building and a possible academic collaboration with Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), particularly the College of Allied Medicine.

The said meeting was attended by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano together with OIAA staff, College of Allied Medicine Dean Dr. Dhenalyn Aquino, Program Chair (BS Nursing) Prof. Maria Luisa Baretto, SELC College Officials – President and CEO Mr. Patrick Dang, Director of Business Development Mr. Yatan Anand; HBE Canada Officials – Vice President of Clinical Services Ms. Liezl Hippsley, and the Vice President of Business Development Mr. Ron Villanueva.

Productivity, profitability and quality of honey, pollen and propolis of stingless bees in various bee hive materials

This study aims to identify the best hive structure for stingless bees (Tetragonula sp.) using different beehive materials and to assess the productivity, profitability, and quality of stingless bee products such as honey, pollen, and propolis. The study aims to address the lack of published information in this area and evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of stingless bees. The outcomes of the research will be disseminated to farmers/beekeepers, extension agents, and students through farmer's field schools, training, workshops, and various publications.

Reproductive Phenology, Propagation, and Habitat Characterization of Threatened and Economically Valuable Flora in Mt. Banahaw de Lucban

The goal of this study is to develop effective strategies for propagating threatened plant species by considering their natural life cycle, species distribution, and habitat preferences. The study aims to identify suitable nursery techniques, determine the phenology and pollination mechanism of the plants, and explore both sexual and asexual propagation methods. Additionally, the project seeks to model species distribution and habitat suitability to estimate abundance and identify suitable habitats for future enrichment planting
