SHAPE-Mo (Self-Health Assessment for Pregnant and Expectant Mother) Mobile Application

The goal of this study is to design and develop the SHAPE-Mo (Self Health Assessment for Pregnant or Expectant Mother) Mobile Application. The mobile application aims to monitor fetal health by assessing parameters such as fetal heart rate and movement, as well as maternal health indicators. The app will provide an estimated delivery date calculator, assess fetal and maternal well-being, and analyze data to identify normal fetal growth based on heart rate and weight. Medical experts will validate the data and evaluate the application based on software quality criteria.

OIAA coordinates with GAD and Catalyste+, Canada for the upcoming projects in 2023

On January 26, 2023, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs, lead by Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, arranged a meeting with Catalyste+, Canada to discuss the proposed projects for the year 2023. Attended by Gender and Development Office Head Dr. Leomar C. Miano, Catalyste+ Country Representative – Philippines Mr. Matt Navalta, Catalyste+ Project Officers – Mr. Erwin Altamarino and Mr. Hermie. Mr. Navalta received a Certificate of Appreciation in grateful recognition for the unending support of Catalyste+ to Southern Luzon State University’s project and programs towards achieving the goal of providing a quality education. The discussion on the successful implementation of the business mentoring sessions had brought the opportunity of replicating the programs for the academic year 2023-2024. The faculty of the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) will be part of the capability enhancement undertaking. On the other hand, the business students of CABHA and Graduate School will be subject to the “Empowering Business Students through Mentoring – Part 3” anchored on the Catalyste+ program on Accelerating Women Empowerment.

Reina Federation of Parents Associations Undergoes Training in Gender Sensitivity

One of the pressing concerns that parents face in raising their children is the different gender issues arising from their unique social location and gender roles. To address this and to properly educate the members of the REINA Federation of Parents Association, Inc., the SLSU Extensions Office facilitated a Gender Sensitivity Training on October 12-13, 2023 at Brgy. Ilog, Infanta, Quezon.

Dr. Leomar C. Miano, Director of Extensions Office and SLSU GAD Focal Person serves as the resource speaker during the training. She discusses topics related to gender sensitivity including GAD concepts, gender analysis, and understanding of SOGIE. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing gender issues present in different sectors. She further discusses the significance of gender analysis to assess the immediate needs of the community.

The parents engage during the discussions addressing the different gender issues they have encountered, specifically in raising their children. They also activity participated in the activities which increased their awareness of GAD concepts and principles.

This activity kick-starts the partnership between REINA Federation of Parents Association, Inc. and SLSU, to assist the parents and children inthe municipalities of Real, Infanta, and General Nakar.

SLSU Partners with DSWD and LGU-Lucban in Addressing Gender Sensitivity for the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW

By virtue of Proclamation 1172 s. 2006, the Philippines designates the period from November 25 to December 12 as the advocacy campaign duration for the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). This proclamation mandates the active participation of all national government agencies, state colleges, LGUs, and various sectors of society during this campaign period.

In line with this commitment, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) collaborated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV-A (DSWD FO IV-A) and the Local Government Unit of Lucban to observe the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, through a Gender Sensitivity Training for Male Spouses, catering both 4Ps and Non-4Ps beneficiaries of Lucban and Tayabas, Quezon on December 12, 2023, at the College of Allied Medicine Learning Center (CLC).

Dr. Nilo H. Dator, OIC-President of SLSU, took the opportunity during the training to deliver an inspirational message. He encouraged participants to actively support the campaign by embodying the role of a loving husband to their spouses and being respectable fathers for their children. Meanwhile, Dr. Leomar C. Miano, the Director of Extension Services, extended a warm welcome to the participants from Lucban and Tayabas City. She underscored the importance of recognizing and respecting everyone’s gender orientation in fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. Facilitating the training, Ms. Richelle Marquez-Jael and Ms. Rhoda R. Ello served as the resource persons. The modules covered essential topics such as “Sex and Gender,” “Gender Issues,” and a unique “Gender Sensitivity Walk.”

In the pipeline for approval of the BOR are SLSU’s R&D Center for Agri-Aqua Resources, Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy, Center for Mt. Banahaw Studies, and Design and Innovation Center.

More than seventy (70) participants engage in activities during the session which includes writing love letters addressed to their spouses, adding a personal touch to the training and emphasizing the significance of building strong, respectful relationships.

“GAD Agenda: Planning and Designing Inclusive Projects and Programs for Gender Responsive Environment and Mental Health Sensitization Seminar” | August 16-17, 2023 | Lemery, Batangas

A two-day learning and development activity organized by the Gender and Development (GAD) Office and Employees Association was held with topics on GAD agenda formulation and mental health sensitization. Dr. Bernardita E. Brillon, former GAD Head and HRMO and Prof. Gino A. Cabrera, Officer-in-Charge of HRMO served as the resource speakers and workshop facilitators.

Personally attended by the University President herself, Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes expressed her admiration and appreciation to the non-teaching personnel of the University as they are the unsung heroes working at the forefront of the University’s operations. She emphasized that formulating their own GAD agenda addressing issues that centered around their own welfare is a testament of University’s quest for excellence and equality.

During the workshop, the best efforts of SLSU employees were manifested in the “Living Gallery” activity reflecting their commitment in the SLSU Employees Association’s GAD agenda formulation. With the mental health sensitization seminar, participants were given assignments which include creating happy memories, cultivating their inner potentials, and considering expressive arts as a form of relief from stress.

All in all, activity conveys that SLSU administration as well as the Employees Association give prime importance to inclusivity and mental health.

Empowering Business Students (Graduate School) through Mentoring Part 2 finishes off through a Culminating Activity

With the full support of the administration, SLSU - Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) in collaboration with Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) has successfully wrapped up the “Capability Enhancement on International Business for College of Administration, Business Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) Faculty with CESO” through a Culminating Activity held on September 1, 2022 via zoom. The event highlighted the learning insights of the faculty in the series of training session from July 14, 2022 anchored on CESO’s program on Accelerating Women Empowerment.

SLSU Head of Faculty and Staff Development Program Dr. Susana A. Salvacion formally opened the Culminating Activity by giving a warm welcome remark followed by the inspirational message by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes. Present in the said event are the Dean of Graduate School (GS) Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee, faculty of CABHA and GS – DBA and MBA programs, OIAA staff, and CESO Project Officers – Mr. Vener Valerio and Mr. Erwin Altamarino. The synthesis of learning insights and appreciation were expressed by Prof. Rosemarie N. Gella and Prof. Jeremiah P. Elloso as one of the trainees. The closing remarks are delivered by Dr. Chona V. Cayabat – Dean of CABHA and Mr. Matt Navalta – CESO Country Representative, Philippines.

The faculty who was grouped into four, presented an export plan as the output of the training which were commended by CESO. Furthermore, the output can be disseminated and discussed to the concerned entities. This may serve as a rapid export assessment and can be coordinated with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) is privileged to be supported and complemented with talents of CESO in the goal of sustaining personnel development and competency level of teaching personnel through faculty training. This training on international business handled by a well-rounded CESO Advisor Mr. Aarij Bashir and the active participation of the trainees have made the objectives of the mentoring met–provision of technical training, updates on trends on international business operation, and uplifted entrepreneurial spirit.

SLSU welcomes Catalyste+ Advisor Mr. Gerry O’Connor: Empowering Business Students through Mentoring Program

SLSU – Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) welcomes the Catalyste+ Advisor Mr. Gerry O’Connor at Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) main campus in Lucban, Quezon, Philippines.

A campus tour was conducted on the first day of stay of Mr. O’Connor, where he was able to learn the laboratories and facilities particularly, the main library, Hospitality Management laboratory, College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA), Office of Students Affairs and Services (OSAS), Administration building, and College of Allied Medicine (CAM). The campus tour was hosted by the OIAA through Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, assisted by OIAA staff: Ms. Jeannet Cosejo, Mr. Dexter Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra Racelis, and in coordination with the respective colleges.

OIAA facilitated a recognition program for Mr. O’Connor who extensively shared his expertise and stimulated the students’ entrepreneurial spirit. Dr. Verano formally opened the program by giving a warm welcome remarks followed by the appreciation message by the SLSU President Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, and Dean of CABHA Dr. Chona V. Cayabat. Present in the said event are the faculty of CABHA and the participants including the group of business students who won the “Best Business Plan” during the mentoring sessions.

The faculty and students expressed their appreciation to Mr. O’Connor, to Catalyste+, and to the university for providing them an international and industry perspective on enterprise development through the implementation of “Empowering Business Students through Mentoring ” program.

The successful implementation of the mentoring program provided the students with a wonderful learning experience. Mr. O’Connor admired the faculty, staff, officials, and the students with their support and cooperation in the execution of the projects and programs of SLSU with Catalyste+ towards achieving the common goal of providing a quality education for the students. The closing remarks were delivered by the Project Officer of Catalyste+ Mr. Erwin Altamarino.

SLSU is privileged to be supported by Catalyste+ in this endeavor, providing opportunities to cultivate and support build business community through the mentoring of students with the expertise of Catalyste+ advisors.

Unlocking the Potentials of SLSU Administrative Office Non-Teaching Staff through Mentoring

With the successful implementation of mentoring program with the graduate and undergraduate students of business administration and allied programs, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs in cooperation with Catalyste+, Canada had extended the program for the non-teaching personnel of Southern Luzon State University – Administrative Offices. The “Accelerating Women Empowerment of Business Students, Faculty, Staff and Business Counselors and Entrepreneurs through Mentoring – Part 3” was successfully executed in coordination with the Gender and Development Office, Human Resource Management Office – Faculty and Staff Development Program and Management Information System.

The mentoring session kicks off on October 24, 2023. OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano facilitated the opening of the program by providing a background on the mentoring program, followed by a warm welcome remark from the Vice-President of Administrative and Financial Affairs Dr. Frederick T. Villa. OIC-President Dr. Nilo H. Dator gave an inspirational message and encouraged the non-teaching staff to actively participate in the mentoring sessions, highlighting the opportunity in preparing for the next generation of leaders in the organization. It was then followed by a formal introduction of the Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer.

Dr. O’Dwyer presented the “Getting it Done Management System”, specifically on the following tools: insights/impact, courage, effective decision-making, buy-in decisions, ownership grid, team action plan. The participants were grouped into four and were asked to participate in individual and team tasks as administered for the topic application. A total of 3 sessions were facilitated in which the participants appreciated and confirmed the usefulness of the GID tools.

On October 25, 2023, a culminating activity was facilitated. Representatives of each team shared a synthesis of learning which Dr. O’Dwyer appreciated. Certificate of Completion was awarded to the participants by SLSU-OIAA, Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. O’Dwyer and Chief Admin. Officer (CAO) Dr. Erwin D. Villaverde. CAO Dr. Villaverde delivered the closing remark, extending thanks to the international partner - Catalyste+, Canada and the Office of International and Alumni Affairs for conducting mentoring program to the non-teaching staff, providing a wonderful learning opportunity.

Graduate School DBA and MBA students completes mentoring program with Catalyste+, Canada

With the successful implementation of the mentoring program in 2022 with the Graduate School – Doctor of Business Administration and Master in Business Administration, the Office of International and Alumni Affairs in coordination with the Graduate School and Gender and Development Office, replicated and facilitated a series of mentoring sessions through a hybrid set-up which aimed to empower the students and enhance their entrepreneurial and business skills.

The first mentoring session was held on September 30, 2023 via Zoom platform, preliminaries was facilitated by OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano and staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra D. Racelis, where Dean of CABHA Dr. Chona V. Cayabat, formally opened the program with a warm welcome remark and shared how the mentors play a crucial role in the success of the students, followed by words of inspiration from the Dean of Graduate School Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee. Dr. Verano briefly discussed the objectives of the mentoring program and introduced the Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer.

On October 20, 2023, the delegations from Catalyste+ arrived at SLSU Main Campus, Lucban, Quezon for the facilitation of the face-to-face mentoring sessions. The Catalyste+ Advisor met with the GS faculty and students on October 21, 2023 for the continuation of the mentoring program.

The Catalyste+ Advisor Dr. John O’Dwyer paid a courtesy visit to SLSU officials starting with the Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, Dean of CABHA Dr. Cayabat, and the Head of Gender and Development Office Dr. Leomar C. Miano. A campus tour was also facilitated where Dr. O’Dwyer had the opportunity to learn and visit the facilities of SLSU, specifically the following offices: College of Allied Medicine, College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy, SLSU Gymnasium and University Library.

The mentoring program finishes off with a Culminating Activity, hosted by Dr. Verano. OIAA prepared an AVP on the proceedings of the mentoring with Catalyste+, Canada. CABHA Dean Dr. Cayabat and GS Dean Dr. Lee gave an inspirational message, appreciating the Catalyste+ through CA Dr. O’Dwyer in providing an insightful mentoring to the GS students of SLSU and to OIAA as well for organizing such program, and reiterating to the students the wonderful opportunity they had with the program. Synthesis of learning from the student was shared, acknowledging Dr. O’Dwyers generosity in sharing his expertise and confirming on the topics they learned from the series of mentoring and application of the insights at their respective workplaces. A Certificate of Participation to the students and faculty and a Certificate of Appreciation to Dr. John O’Dwyer were awarded as a gesture of acknowledgment in completing and facilitating the mentoring sessions. Closing remarks was delivered by GAD Head Dr. Miano. Evaluation on the mentoring sessions via QR code and a photo opportunity with Dr. O’Dwyer were facilitated afterwards. Indeed, the Part 3 of mentoring program with the Graduate School Business Administration students and faculty was another productive undertaking with the SLSU’s international partner, Catalyste+, Canada.

Empowering Business Students of CABHA through mentoring session, wraps up

SLSU – Office of International and Alumni Affairs (OIAA) in coordination with Catalyste+, Canada, Gender and Development Office (GAD) and College of Administration, Business, Hospitality and Accountancy (CABHA) replicated last year’s mentoring session, with Catalyste+, Canada Program on Accelerating Women Empowerment, for the Third Year Business Students. The mentoring program “Accelerating Women Empowerment of Busines Students, Faculty, Staff, Business Counselors and Entrepreneurs through Mentoring – Part 3” was facilitated by the OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, staff Mr. Dexter C. Diamante and Ms. Kaye Xandra D. Racelis, and with student assistants Ms. Alyssa Erika Terciano and Ms. Mari Ysobelle Manzanilla.

With the implementation of the hybrid set-up, the first day of mentoring program kicks off on September 14, 2023 via Zoom and Facebook live. Dr. Chona V. Cayabat - Dean of CABHA formally opened the event with a warm welcome remark, followed by an inspirational message shared by Dr. Leomar C. Miano – Head, Gender and Development. OIAA Director Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano presented the objectives of the mentoring program and introduced the faculty of CABHA, followed by the introduction of the Catayste+ Advisor – Mr. Gerry O’Connor.

On September 21, 2023, SLSU warmly welcomed the Catalyste+ Advisor Mr. O’Connor with the delegates from Catalyste+, Canada – Mr. Matt Navalta (Country Representative) and Mr. Erwin Altamarino (Project Officer). The in-person mentoring sessions were held from September 25 to September 28, 2023, in which the students actively participated and shared their insights of the topics presented by the advisor.

A culminating activity was also facilitated on September 28, 2023 to wrap up the mentoring sessions, hosted by OIAA Director assisted by OIAA staff and student assistants in coordination with MIS-ICT headed by Dr. Reynaldo Danganan, and staff Ms. Ana May Leobrera, Mr. Gil Joseph O. Obdianela, Mr. Kirt Ronaldo Cada, Mr. Milton Gaelo and PPF staff Mr. Bert Baer. A certificate of participation was presented to the faculty and students of CABHA, and a certificate of appreciation was given to Mr. O’Connor in recognition for his meritorious role in sharing his knowledge and expertise. It was then followed by a mentoring session with CABHA faculty held at GS Ideation Room in which Sir O’Connor shared the business education landscape of Canada.

The series of mentoring sessions had been a great opportunity to instill learnings and uplift entrepreneurial spirit among the students and faculty.
