SLSU Office of Extension Services attended the Launching of San Antonio's Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center on September 28, at San Antonio Municipal Hall, Poblacion, San Antonio, Quezon.
Also present in the activity are Municipal Mayor Hon. Aniano Wagan Jr. Center Director Dr. Rolando V. Maningas, Vice Mayor Jennifer H. Murphy, OPA Quezon FITS Manager Ms. Hannah Phoebe Romero, Municipal Agriculturist and FITS Manager Ms. Jennifer Cusi, and Officers of various farmers and fisherfolks groups of San Antonio.
FITS Centers aim to provide knowledge and appropriate technologies that will aid farmers and fisherfolk in agricultural technologies and innovations
San Antonio FITS Center is the 16th center established in Quezon Province,
Southern Luzon State University, is entrusted to monitor the FITS Centers through the Office of Extension Services.

Reina Federation of Parents Associations Undergoes Training in Gender Sensitivity

One of the pressing concerns that parents face in raising their children is the different gender issues arising from their unique social location and gender roles. To address this and to properly educate the members of the REINA Federation of Parents Association, Inc., the SLSU Extensions Office facilitated a Gender Sensitivity Training on October 12-13, 2023 at Brgy. Ilog, Infanta, Quezon.

Dr. Leomar C. Miano, Director of Extensions Office and SLSU GAD Focal Person serves as the resource speaker during the training. She discusses topics related to gender sensitivity including GAD concepts, gender analysis, and understanding of SOGIE. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing gender issues present in different sectors. She further discusses the significance of gender analysis to assess the immediate needs of the community.

The parents engage during the discussions addressing the different gender issues they have encountered, specifically in raising their children. They also activity participated in the activities which increased their awareness of GAD concepts and principles.

This activity kick-starts the partnership between REINA Federation of Parents Association, Inc. and SLSU, to assist the parents and children inthe municipalities of Real, Infanta, and General Nakar.

SLSU Empowers BP2 Villages with Comprehensive Entrepreneurial Training Program

In a bid to foster economic growth and empower residents of Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa (BP2) Villages in selected Agrarian Reform Communities (ARCs) within Quezon Province, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has successfully conducted a comprehensive training program. The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Quezon I, covered key aspects of entrepreneurship and aimed to equip participants with essential skills for sustainable development.

Participants are trained in the following aspects, Marketing and Entrepreneurial Mindset; Leadership and Values Formation; Supply and Value Chain Management; Entrepreneurial Accounting and Financial Management; Product Development. In addition, participants are also trained on food processing including tomato sauce and tomato ketchup processing, and meat processing. The program, run from October to December 2023, washeld in the municipalities of Tiaong and Sariaya, Quezon, ensuring accessibility for participants from the targeted BP2 Villages.

Furthermore, a culminating activity is held on December 21-22, 2023 at Tagaytay, which is attended by ARCs of Sariaya and Dolores, Quezon. These activities is led by Dr. Leomar C. Miano, project leader together with Dr. Chona V. Cayabat, Dr. Felino J. Gutierez, Prof. Claire Ann M. Yao, Prof. Aurita A. Laguador, and Prof. Gino A. Cabrera, project members.

CAS “Beads-on-the-Go”: Opens New Livelihood Opportunities for Stay-at-Home Mothers

In a vibrant display of creativity, the College of Arts and Science (CAS) conducted an extension project titled "BEADS-On-The-Go: Create, Engage, Inspire." which took place on September 23, 2023, in Lucban, Quezon, showcasing the college's commitment to community engagement and the transformative power of art.

One of the flagship extension projects in College of Arts and Sciences is beads making. It started as a hobby among the CAS faculty members then later on it was shared to the community. This beads making has able to teach persons with disabilities (PWD), as well as mothers in different areas of Quezon.

The Gintong Kalinga Child Development Center (GKCDC), an organization that aims to give assistance and uplift the lives of members of the community in Lucban, Quezon, sought technical assistance from the CAS in bead making.

Ms. Clarell M. Salumbides, a beneficiary of the bead making extension project of CAS, assumed the role of trainer for the activity. Her discussion centered on her modest exploration in beads making, emphasizing how beads making she was able to provide for her son’s education. Meanwhile, Ms. Rosalyn Carneo discussed the materials which would be used during on beads making and demonstrated how to create keychains and images using beads.

The collaborative effort is held in Brgy, Nagsinamo, benefitting twenty (20) stay-at-home mothers who eagerly participated in the activity.

Pasabay for Sama-Badjao: CTE’s Initiative to Help Indigenous People Community

To promote cultural preservation and economic empowerment for the indigenous people, the College of Teacher Education, constructed the extension project “AKBAY (Alalay sa mga Katutubong Badjau tungo sa pag-Ahon at pagYabong)” in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), Lucena City Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Rotary Club and Lucban.

The key activities for this project include the PaSaBay (Pag-angat Sa Buhay) which aims to capacitate the Sama-Badjaus tribe housed at Brgy. Barra, Lucena City, which most adults lack formal education.

During the initial session on November 10, 2023, the team visited the Sama-Bajau tribe in Brgy, Ibarra, Lucena City. Facilitators provided hands-on training in basket weaving, with participants eagerly taking part in the activity. Mr. John Paulo R. Alvarez, Mr. Michael Anthony G. Rada, and Ms. Mary Grace A. Delas Alas guided the participants through the intricacies of the craft, fostering a collaborative and interactive learning environment.

The commitment to the tribe’s development was further demonstrated as the team returned on December 6, 2023, to monitor the progress of the participants. Additional techniques and tips were shared to help improve the quality of their woven products, enhancing their marketability. The newfound knowledge not only provides them with a source of livelihood but also contributes to the preservation of their cultural heritage.

SLSU students to Benefit with Sen. Legarda’s Scholarship Initiative

Selected students from all the campuses of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) are said to benefit from the scholarship initiative of Senator Loren Legarda.

The university and the office of Sen. Legarda agreed on Feb. 2, 2023 that SLSU will provide the guidelines and qualifications for the Php 1.3 million worth of scholarship under the Tulong Dunong Program.

According to the dean of the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), Dr. Noreen P. Echague, the students that do not receive any financial assistance will be prioritized in selecting the grantees.

The implementation of the program is set to start during the second semester of AY 2022 – 2023 and first semester of AY 2023 – 2024.

SLSU Students to Receive Scholarships Through Sen. Marcos’ Initiative

A total of 200 students from the different campuses of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) will benefit from the scholarship initiative of Sen. Imee R. Marcos this coming academic year.

Through the Tulong Dunong Program under the Office of Senator Imee R. Marcos, 200 students will receive the scholarship. Sen. Marcos specifically aimed to help incoming freshmen and/or 2nd-year students since the scholarship grant will cover four years’ worth of studies.

In line with this, Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes advised the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) to equally distribute the number of grantees throughout all the campuses.

Additional information on the requirements and how to apply for a scholarship will be posted by OSAS soon.

Hon. Nelson continues the Licup Legacy as BOR Private Sector Rep.

Hon. Nelson C. Licup took oath as the representative of the private sector of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Board of Regents (BOR) on Oct. 17, 2023.

Although it is the first time that Hon. Nelson sits as a part of the BOR; he has been helping SLSU in various ways. To continue the legacy of his father, the late Dr. Roberto C. Licup, Sr., Hon. Nelson donated the following: (1) Php 500,000.00 to support the establishment of the treatment and disposal of toxic waste generated by the BS Radiologic Technology program; and (2) Php 500,000.00 to augment the budget for the purchase of land for the SLSU Main Campus Annex in Brgy. Piis, Lucban, Quezon. Hon. Nelson provided financial assistance to (1) the poor and deserving students under the scholarship program of the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), (2) the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) personnel who are pursuing MBAs at SLSU, and (3) the doctors of the to-be-instituted College of Medicine who will pursue a Master in Public Health Education as required by the CHED Technical Working Group. He also sponsored the CABHA-JPIA project, “Padayon,” which aims to generate funds to upgrade the quality of education in the BS Accountancy program and to incentivize students who will top the CPA Licensure Examination.

Moreover, Hon. Nelson sponsored various events at SLSU Main and SLSU Tiaong.

With his unwavering assistance, Hon. Nelson was awarded as a major benefactor of SLSU during the PRAISE Awards in 2019.

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) received a Plaque of Appreciation from the Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Training Institute, Regional Training Center IV-A, during the Techno Gabay Program (TGP) Summit 2023 held at Mabitac, Laguna, on November 15-17, 2023.

The award is in recognition, of the invaluable support of the university to the Techno Gabay Program (TGP), particularly in the monitoring of the Farmers Information Technology Services (FITS) Centers of Quezon Province. Moreover, Dr. Leomar C. Miano, Director of the Office of Extension Services, as the project team leader, presented the consolidated accomplishment of Quezon FITS Centers, during the first day of the summit via Zoom.
