SLSU recognizes benefactor, retirees, employees in PRAISE 2024

Recognition for the benefactor, retirees, and employees was given during the celebration of the Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) on December 20.

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) commemorated the awardees who have greatly contributed to the achievements of the institution. In particular, the university president, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, highlighted how each one of the awardees deserves the spotlight.

The milestones of the university were made possible through the help of the benefactors; among them is Mr. Jose A. Pandy. He donated land to SLSU, a gift that made a substantial contribution to the development of education and the fulfillment of the university’s vision, mission, and goals. Mr. Pandy was also one of the founding members of the institution. Ms. Nilda Salvaleon, daughter of Mr. Pandy, received the award.

The event also highlighted this year’s faculty retirees: Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, who served the university for 37 years; Associate Professor I, Gilberto C. Venzuela, who served for 32 years; and Associate Professor III, Alexandra Wanda L. Villon, who dedicated 37 years of service.

An Exemplary Behavior Award was given to teaching and non-teaching personnel who showed exceptional conduct as a public official and/or employee. Among the five nominees each in the teaching and non-teaching category, Engr. Zoren P. Mabunga from the College of Engineering (CEN) and Ms. Arceli R. Obmerga from the Office of Extension Services received the award.

Meanwhile, Mr. Brian D. Villaverde of the College of Arts and Sciences was hailed as this year’s Outstanding Teaching Personnel, and Mr. Roberto R. Dalmacion of the General Services Office is this year’s Outstanding Non-teaching Personnel.

Moreover, members of the Administrative Council of the last administration were given service recognition: Dr. Frederick T. Villa as the VP for Administrative and Financial Affairs; Dr. Gondelina A. The event also commended the efforts of the committee, which actively engaged in the commencement of PRAISE 2024.

Themed “Small-scale Fisheries in the Philippines are Too Big to Ignore,” this significant event brings together fishers, policymakers, scientists, researchers, and local government representatives to address the challenges faced by small-scale fisheries.

SLSU actively participates in the discussions to create sustainable and viable solutions for the sector, highlighting the university’s commitment to supporting community development and environmental sustainability.

SLSU emerges as 1st runner-up FOI Champion

Once again, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) was recognized as the first runner-up under the Freedom of Information (FOI)-SUC Category Awards, held during the celebration of the 8th year of the FOI Program implementation in the Philippines on November 25.

President Frederick T. Villa; University Board Secretary, Ms. Aurora L. Sumague; Records Officer, Ms. Eliza P. Beltran; and Executive Assistant, Mr. Jay Mel Nicomedez, received the award at the Hilton Manila Hotel, 1 Newport Blvd., Pasay City.

Last year, SLSU also received the same award in the FOI Champion Category for the SUC. Meanwhile, Ms. Sumague was also hailed as the Best FOI Officer during the event.

FOI Awards is an annual event that brings FOI officers and advocates from government agencies in the Executive Branch and institutions, individuals, and civil society organizations to acknowledge the indispensable role of multi-sector implementers in the institutions of the FOI program in the country.

SLSU Prexy, CHED Comm. Canapi discuss plans for the university

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), led by President Frederick T. Villa, hosted a productive meeting with CHED Commissioner Marita R. Canapi to discuss the university's strategic plans in various areas, November 11.

SLSU warmly welcomed Comm. Canapi, followed by an exchange of ideas on initiatives and proposals focused on faculty development, laboratory projects, and other key priorities.

All proposals will be submitted to the SLSU Board of Regents for approval.

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), with the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Training Institute (DA ATI) IV-A and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) Quezon, conducted a Field and Desk evaluation for the Municipal Agriculture Office (OMA) of Infanta, Quezon as a potential Farmer’s Information Technology Services (FITS) Center.
Dr. Leomar C. Miano, TGP Quezon Team Leader, Dr. Lloyd Balinado, Deputy Consortium Director of STAARRDEC, Ms. Hanna Phoebe Romero, FITS Manager of Quezon Province, and Mr. Hans Christopher Flores of DA ATI CALABARZON, led the field and desk evaluation. They assessed the officers and staff of OMA Infanta to determine their readiness and capability to become a FITS Center.
In addition, the Office of Extension Services (OES) conducted monitoring of the existing FITS Center and KIOSK at the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of General Nakar, Quezon, located in Barangays Anolin and Pamplona. Engr. Jethro Auditor, Agricultural Technologist of OMA General Nakar and also the Information Service Specialist (ISS), participated in the monitoring activities ensuring the effective operation of their FITS centers and KIOSKs.
FITS centers are under the Techno Gabay Program (TGP) of the DA ATI, which aims to enhance the agricultural services and support provided to farmers, by improving their access to agricultural information, resources, and technology.

SLSU OES and OPS partner with PEARLS MPC for soap processing training in Lucban

Southern Luzon State University-(SLSU) Office of Extension Services (OES) and Office of Production Services (OPS) partnered with Progressive Entrepreneurs on Agri-Business and Related Livelihood Services, Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PEARLS MPC) in the conduct a community extension activity titled “Training on Soap Processing for the Community Served by PEARLS MPC” at the SLSU Sanitation Facility, Brgy. Ayuti, Lucban, Quezon on October 10.

Prof. Vanessa S. Cadeliña, the project leader of the SLSU Sanitation Facility, opened the activity by welcoming the participants and providing a brief history of how the facility was established. Ms. Teresita Comia, Board of Director Chairperson of PEARLS MPC, followed with an inspirational message, expressing gratitude to SLSU for the partnership and to the participants for their involvement

During the activity, faculty members from CAM delivered health education talks to the children and the parents of the Agta community. Prof. Melvin D. Cadao introduced the concepts of nutrition, different kinds of vegetable and fruits, as well as how to cook nutritious meals. Meanwhile, Prof. Charito Lilibeth A. Dator provided an in-depth discussion on proper hygiene practices particularly encouraging the children on the proper ways of washing their bodies and hands.

Ms. Charlene Mae Y. Daya, a chemist from OPS, then led a session on sanitation and safety precautions when handling chemical substances. She emphasized the importance of using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safety. Following this, Ms. Daya conducted a discussion on soap processing, explaining the ingredients, proper procedures, and the correct handling of each component.

Participants actively engaged in a hands-on activity, applying their newly acquired knowledge by making batches of papaya soap. They followed the step-by-step procedure under the guidance of Ms. Daya.

The activity concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., OES director, who thanked PEARLS MPC for partnering with SLSU on this initiative. He also highlighted that SLSU offers various livelihood trainings and seminars aimed at community development, encouraging future collaborations.
