SLSU joins Regional Multi-Sectoral Forest Protection Committe

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to be among the members of the Regional Multi-Sectoral Forest Protection Committee (RMFPC) in the CALABARZON Region.

On January 9, SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, and Mt. Banahaw Forest Protection and Conservation Unit (MBFPCU) Director Dr. Francisco N. Beltran signed the MOA. Under the agreement, SLSU will assist the RMFPC in the implementation of forest extension and educational campaign programs, as well as provide inputs to policy review and formulation on how to strengthen and effectively carry out IEC programs. The MOA will be effective for five years.

The RMFPC is composed of heads and representatives of different agencies, local government units, non-government organizations, enforcement sectors, and other stakeholders that work together on environmental and forest preservation projects.

SLSU recognizes benefactor, retirees, employees in PRAISE 2024

Recognition for the benefactor, retirees, and employees was given during the celebration of the Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) on December 20.

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) commemorated the awardees who have greatly contributed to the achievements of the institution. In particular, the university president, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, highlighted how each one of the awardees deserves the spotlight.

The milestones of the university were made possible through the help of the benefactors; among them is Mr. Jose A. Pandy. He donated land to SLSU, a gift that made a substantial contribution to the development of education and the fulfillment of the university’s vision, mission, and goals. Mr. Pandy was also one of the founding members of the institution. Ms. Nilda Salvaleon, daughter of Mr. Pandy, received the award.

The event also highlighted this year’s faculty retirees: Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, who served the university for 37 years; Associate Professor I, Gilberto C. Venzuela, who served for 32 years; and Associate Professor III, Alexandra Wanda L. Villon, who dedicated 37 years of service.

An Exemplary Behavior Award was given to teaching and non-teaching personnel who showed exceptional conduct as a public official and/or employee. Among the five nominees each in the teaching and non-teaching category, Engr. Zoren P. Mabunga from the College of Engineering (CEN) and Ms. Arceli R. Obmerga from the Office of Extension Services received the award.

Meanwhile, Mr. Brian D. Villaverde of the College of Arts and Sciences was hailed as this year’s Outstanding Teaching Personnel, and Mr. Roberto R. Dalmacion of the General Services Office is this year’s Outstanding Non-teaching Personnel.

Moreover, members of the Administrative Council of the last administration were given service recognition: Dr. Frederick T. Villa as the VP for Administrative and Financial Affairs; Dr. Gondelina A. The event also commended the efforts of the committee, which actively engaged in the commencement of PRAISE 2024.

SLSU, DSWD IV-A, LGU Lucban host capability training on GAD-related laws for 4Ps Lucban beneficiaries

On December 19, 2024, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV-A (DSWD FO IV-A) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Lucban, conducted the “Capability Training for Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) on Gender and Development (GAD)—Related Laws cum Program Review, Evaluation, and Awarding of Exemplary Beneficiaries” at the SLSU Gymnasium, SLSU Main Campus, Lucban, Quezon.

The activity started with an opening remark from Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., Director of Extension Services, who warmly welcomed the 4Ps beneficiaries from Lucban. Dr. Gutierrez stated, “Ang 4Ps ay hindi lamang programa kundi isang pangarap na nagkakaroon ng katuparan sa bawat hakbang na ating ginagawa para makatawid sa kahirapan.” (4Ps is not just a program; it is a dream realized through every step we take to overcome poverty).

He emphasized the long partnership between SLSU and DSWD, which began in 2014. Dr. Gutierrez also congratulated the 4Ps beneficiaries and all stakeholders for the program’s success, contributing to Lucban’s remarkable progress from being a 3rd-class municipality to achieving 1st-class status.

One of the program’s highlights was a discussion on women in government. Dr. Sarah Dane B. Lising, chairperson of the SLSU College of Administration, Business, and Hospitality Administration’s (CABHA) Public Administration Department led the lecture.

“May women’s vote ba?” (Is there a women’s vote?) Dr. Lising asks the participants, posing a thought-provoking question about women’s role in governance in the Philippines. She delivered an in-depth analysis of data on women voters in the country, comparing historical contexts when women were discouraged from voting to the present-day scenario. Moreover, she highlighted the achievements of women in politics, including the Philippines’ two women presidents. Dr. Lising concluded her talk by encouraging everyone, particularly women, to be critical and empowered in exercising their right to vote, emphasizing its impact on the nation’s future.

The event also featured a food presentation contest, where parent groups showcased their culinary skills by preparing special dishes to share with attendees. One of the contest judges was Prof. Jeremiah P. Elloso from the CABHA’s Hospitality Management Department. The contest celebrated the creativity and talent of the participants, fostering camaraderie among the 4Ps beneficiaries.

The activity was attended by approximately 700 4Ps beneficiaries from Lucban, Quezon.

CHED commends SLSU’s global impact

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) acknowledged the commitment of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) to excellence and global impact by giving four prestigious awards.

On December 18, Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, the Director of the International Affairs and External Linkages Office (IAELO), represented SLSU during the CHED Internationalization (IZN) Awards 2024. The university received four awards, namely: (1) Top 2 Performing HEI in Internationalization for Resource Generation; (2) World’s Most Sustainable University 2024, as recognized in the UI Green Metric University Rankings; (3) EDUrank Best Universities Award 2024; and (4) Recognition as an HEI with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Accreditation.

These prestigious awards underscore SLSU’s continued commitment to excellence in higher education, global partnerships, sustainability, and quality standards.

DSWD grants Trailblazer Partnership Award to SLSU

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) presented Southern Luzon State University with the Trailblazer Partnership Award on December 18.

The award was given to the university in recognition of its exceptional initiative, commitment, and innovation as a collaborating institution during the implementation of the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.

The tutoring program was launched to provide educational assistance to students in difficult situations and to assist struggling or non-reader grade school learners.

CHTE tackles the conversion of SLSU Gumaca into a regular campus

The Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education (CHTE) discussed the conversion of SLSU Gumaca into a regular campus, along with other conversions and the establishment of state universities and colleges, on December 17.

Among the bills discussed was House Bill No. 10805, also known as an act converting the extension campus of the Southern Luzon State University in the Municipality of Gumaca, Province of Quezon into a regular campus and appropriating funds therefor, authored by Cong. Keith Micah Tan of the 4th District of Quezon, et.al.

During the public hearing, it was emphasized that all bills requesting the conversion will be approved provided that the SUCs will comply with the requirements, which include having Certificates of Program Compliance with all of its program offerings.

Currently, all programs of SLSU Gumaca have COPCs, which include a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies; a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics; a BSIT major in Computer Technology; and a BSBA major in Human Resource Management.

With this, the bill will be deliberated under a technical working group before proceeding to the first reading.

SLSU among DTI’s Top-Performing Shared Service Facilities in Quezon Province

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has been recognized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as one of the top-performing Shared Service Facilities (SSF) in Quezon Province for 2024 during the SSF Benchmarking and Year-End Assessment Activity held on December 12 at Uratex Foam in Muntinlupa City.

The event, which aimed to evaluate the performance of SSFs across the region, was attended by For. Eraldwin A. Dimailig, Director of SLSU’s Office of Production Services, along with his administrative support staff, Ms. Anna Rose Julve. The program featured benchmarking activities, updates on SSF project performance, and a formal recognition ceremony for top-performing cooperators. These activities offered participants valuable insights into industry best practices and manufacturing innovations, enhancing their operational capabilities.

This recognition underscores SLSU’s commitment to excellence in service delivery and operational efficiency. Further, it reflects the University’s dedication to adopting best practices and innovative production processes that benefit the local community and economy in Quezon Province.

SLSU officials discuss SUC leveling updates and targets for FY 2025

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) officials held a meeting for SUC leveling updates and target setting for 2024 on December 12.

The Planning Office (PO), headed by Dir. Jed Frank Marqueses facilitated the meeting. Among the attendees were the University President, Dr. Frederick T. Villa; Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, OIC VP for Administrative and Financial Affairs; Dr. Dhenalyn A. Dejelo, OIC VP for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Erwin D. Villaverde, Chief Administrative Officer.

The morning session tackled key results under Area 5: Governance and Management, which was attended by the directors and representatives of the offices under Administrative and Financial Affairs.

Meanwhile, the afternoon session addressed Areas 1 and 2: Access and Equity, and Quality and Relevance of Instruction, which was attended by the offices under Academic Affairs, the deans, and campus directors.

These activities were conducted to meet the university’s institutional goals and objectives.

SLSU College of Medicine classes kick-off with 9 Students

After almost a decade of preparation, the newly established Southern Luzon State University - College of Medicine (COM) started its classes on December 9 with nine students.

Among the hundred application, 18 applicants passed the initial assessment, and 12 passed the overall qualification. Among them, nine students enrolled and agreed to render one (1) year of service in government public health office, government hospital, or any accredited government public health facility in their hometown or any underserved municipality in any province, for every scholarship year. This is in pursuant to Section 14 of the IRR of RA 11509.

Basic sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biostatistics, Histology, and Family Medicine, are amongst the subjects for the first semester. The first semester is scheduled to finish on May 13, 2025 and will resume on May 26 for the second semester.

CHED grants government permit for Doctor of Medicine program

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted Southern Luzon State University—College of Medicine (COM) a government permit to operate effective for AY 2024-2025.

The CHED Resolution 673-2024, COM can operate the first and second-year levels of the Doctor of Medicine program. On December 5, CHED Chairman, Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III signed Government Permit No. 19, s. 2024 provided that SLSU complies with the prescribed standards of instruction and other premises.

COM started its classes on December 9 with nine students. The first semester is set to finish on May 13, 2025. The second semester will begin on May 16.

The SLSU College of Medicine is the first state university in Quezon Province to offer a Doctor of Medicine program. With this, SLSU will be able to produce medical practitioners who will serve the geographically isolated and disadvantaged area of the province.
