SLSU recognizes benefactor, retirees, employees in PRAISE 2024

Recognition for the benefactor, retirees, and employees was given during the celebration of the Program on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) on December 20.

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) commemorated the awardees who have greatly contributed to the achievements of the institution. In particular, the university president, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, highlighted how each one of the awardees deserves the spotlight.

The milestones of the university were made possible through the help of the benefactors; among them is Mr. Jose A. Pandy. He donated land to SLSU, a gift that made a substantial contribution to the development of education and the fulfillment of the university’s vision, mission, and goals. Mr. Pandy was also one of the founding members of the institution. Ms. Nilda Salvaleon, daughter of Mr. Pandy, received the award.

The event also highlighted this year’s faculty retirees: Dr. Gondelina A. Radovan, who served the university for 37 years; Associate Professor I, Gilberto C. Venzuela, who served for 32 years; and Associate Professor III, Alexandra Wanda L. Villon, who dedicated 37 years of service.

An Exemplary Behavior Award was given to teaching and non-teaching personnel who showed exceptional conduct as a public official and/or employee. Among the five nominees each in the teaching and non-teaching category, Engr. Zoren P. Mabunga from the College of Engineering (CEN) and Ms. Arceli R. Obmerga from the Office of Extension Services received the award.

Meanwhile, Mr. Brian D. Villaverde of the College of Arts and Sciences was hailed as this year’s Outstanding Teaching Personnel, and Mr. Roberto R. Dalmacion of the General Services Office is this year’s Outstanding Non-teaching Personnel.

The event also commended the efforts of the committee, which actively engaged in the commencement of PRAISE 2024.

DSWD grants Trailblazer Partnership Award to SLSU

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) presented Southern Luzon State University with the Trailblazer Partnership Award on December 18.

The award was given to the university in recognition of its exceptional initiative, commitment, and innovation as a collaborating institution during the implementation of the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.

The tutoring program was launched to provide educational assistance to students in difficult situations and to assist struggling or non-reader grade school learners.

SLSU College of Medicine classes kick-off with 9 Students

After almost a decade of preparation, the newly established Southern Luzon State University - College of Medicine (COM) started its classes on December 9 with nine students.

Among the hundred application, 18 applicants passed the initial assessment, and 12 passed the overall qualification. Among them, nine students enrolled and agreed to render one (1) year of service in government public health office, government hospital, or any accredited government public health facility in their hometown or any underserved municipality in any province, for every scholarship year. This is in pursuant to Section 14 of the IRR of RA 11509.

Basic sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biostatistics, Histology, and Family Medicine, are amongst the subjects for the first semester. The first semester is scheduled to finish on May 13, 2025 and will resume on May 26 for the second semester.

SLSU Catanauan hosts bloodletting activity for AFP’s 89th anniversary

In celebration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) 89th anniversary, the SLSU Catanauan Campus hosted a bloodletting activity on December 8.

The event, titled “Laang Kawal at Makabagong Bayani: Dugong Alay Mo, Sandigan ng Buhay Ko,” was part of a simultaneous AFP-wide blood donation initiative.

The event was organized by the AFP in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross and other supporting organizations. Participants included ROTC units from Southern Luzon State University Catanauan Campus, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Mulanay, PUP General Luna, and Colegio de General Luna. The activity was open to the public, inviting volunteers from the local community to join the cause.

This collaborative effort highlighted SLSU and AFP’s dedication to community service and health advocacy while fostering a sense of unity and volunteerism. Further, the successful bloodletting activity demonstrated how collective efforts can make a significant impact, providing much-needed support to healthcare systems and saving lives.

First Quezon Makiling Eagles Club partners with SLSU NSTP to aid Typhoon Kristine victims

In a heartwarming act of solidarity, the First Quezon Makiling Eagles Club, in partnership with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) unit of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), distributed relief goods to individuals affected by Typhoon Kristine.

The relief distribution, which included essential items such as rice and canned goods, took place at the SLSU Gymnasium of Catanauan Campus on November 23, 2023, Saturday. The effort aimed to give assistance to the members of the SLSU community as they recover from the typhoon’s impacts, fostering a sense of unity and care during trying times.

Asst. Prof. Cerfred A. Alcantara, Campus Director of SLSU Catanauan, welcomed the participants and expressed his gratitude to the First Quezon Makiling Eagles Club and the NSTP Unit for their collaborative efforts. He emphasized the importance of coming together to address the immediate needs of those affected.

During the event, CLTC Nilo H. Dator, INF GSC PA (Res), NSTP Director and ROTC Commandant, highlighted the purpose of their organization and reaffirmed their commitment to serving the community. Additionally, he provided a concise overview of the areas in Quezon significantly affected by Typhoon Kristine.

The event was made more impactful by the presence of active members of the First Quezon Makiling Eagles Club, who played a key role in the relief distribution. Among those present were Jhun Nantes, SGT Manny M. Paulite, CPL William Forneste, and MSG Gabriel C. Cabangon. Their dedication and commitment exemplified the club’s mission to extend help to communities in need.

The relief recipients expressed their appreciation, noting how the support eased their immediate concerns and lifted their spirits. The event showcased how partnerships between organizations and educational institutions can bring meaningful assistance to communities during difficult times.

The program concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Mr. Ernesto C. Formento III, LPT, ROTC Coordinator of SLSU Catanauan. SLSU sparks support for Project ISKOL Blood Donation Drive

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) rallies support for Project ISKOL (Involving Schools in Kindling Outreach for Life) through an advocacy campaign promoting participation across Quezon Province for the Blood Olympics, set to take place on the main campus in Lucban, Quezon on November 18.

In preparation for the blood donation drive, SLSU organized a campaign on November 11 led by Director Vanessa Cadeliña of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Coordinating Office, aiming to inspire students, faculty, staff, and alumni to contribute to this life-saving initiative.

Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, SLSU OIC-Vice President, warmly welcomed attendees to the campaign launch, followed by an inspirational message from SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, who highlighted the impact of blood donation.

“We have the opportunity to come together in the spirit of giving, to help save lives through this blood donation drive. When you donate blood, you are offering a part of yourself to someone in urgent need,” Dr. Villa said.

The Blood Olympics aims to boost voluntary blood donations across CALABARZON, particularly in Quezon Province, and to build a sense of community and volunteerism. Its objectives include raising awareness about the importance of blood donation, fostering teamwork, promoting a culture of life-saving volunteerism, and establishing long-term connections between educational institutions and local blood services.

Open to all recognized universities and colleges within CALABARZON, the Blood Olympics invites students, faculty, staff, and alumni to participate. Key partners include the Quezon Provincial DOH Office (PDOHO), DOH CALABARZON, the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP), as well as partner blood centers and hospital blood banks such as Quezon Medical Center and Mt. Carmel Hospital.

The project offers rewards for schools excelling in donation efforts. The Life-Blood Champion Award will be given to the university with the highest number of donors, while the Beacon of Life Award will honor schools with the highest percentage of donors relative to their population. Winners will receive project grants of PHP 100,000 (1st Place) and PHP 50,000 (2nd Place), subject to approval by the Provincial DOH Officer.

Project ISKOL highlights the vital role of schools in promoting blood donation awareness through friendly competition, enhancing camaraderie among participants, and instilling a culture of giving in younger generations.

1st YES 4 SLSU Fitness Cup: Advancing Gender Equality, Healthy and Empowering Women

Aligned with University President Dr. Frederick T. Villa's advocacy for Health and Wellness, and in compliance with CSC Memorandum Circular No. 05, s. 1996 and No. 04, s. 2020, the University Health Services, in collaboration with the HRMO - Faculty and Staff Development Program and the Gender and Development Office, along with support from the Faculty and Employees Club, Faculty Association, Employees Association, and the Institute of Human Kinetics, organized the 1st YES 4 SLSU Fitness Cup.

This activity aims to promote, inform, and educate participants on physical and mental health well-being. Scheduled over seven (7) Thursdays, from July 11 to August 22, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, activities will take place at the University Gymnasium, Covered Court, and Tennis Court.

Personnel together with the KALAHI-CIDSS beneficiaries from the main campus participated in the volleyball, basketball, badminton and Zumba activities organized by the UHS. It is expected that extension and satellite campuses to have parallel activities to be conducted in the coming weeks.

SLSU OES, EA host Mental Health Session and Outreach Program for elementary students and parents

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Office of Extension Services (OES) and the Employees Association (EA) successfully held a mental health awareness seminar and outreach activity at Paaralang Elementarya ng Nakal for students and their parents, October 29.

The event received warm welcome from Ms. Mary Rose C. Estrabo, Head Teacher III at Paaralang Elementarya ng Nakal in Lucban, Quezon, as well as from faculty members, parents, and students who greeted the visting SLSU EA officers and OES staff.

Dr. Bernardita E. Brillon, a faculty member from the College of Allied Medicine (CAM), presented an insightful lecture on mental health. Her discussion covered mental health fundamentals, potential causes of mental health challenges, and prevention strategies. Dr. Brillon actively engaged parents, teachers, and students, fostering an interactive learning experience.

Following the seminar, an outreach program included a gift-giving activity where students received hygiene kits to support daily routines. Additionally, a group dance activity encouraged students to appreciate the mental and physical health benefits of exercise.

The event was spearheaded by SLSU EA President Ms. Emma O. Reyes, in collaboration with the Office of Extension Services, headed by Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., as part of this year’s university celebration of Kawani Day.

SLSU brings health education and outreach to the Agta community in General Nakar, Quezon

The Southern Luzon State University - Office of Extension Services (OES), together with the College of Allied Medicine (CAM), conducted a health education and outreach activity for the Agta community in Sitio Maksa, Barangay Magsikap, General Nakar, Quezon, on October 9.

The chieftain of the Agta community, Mr. Marlon Astoveza, welcomed the team. Mr. Astoveza, along with the other community members, expressed their gratitude to SLSU for choosing their community for this initiative. He also voiced hopes for future extension activities that would further benefit the Agta people.

During the activity, faculty members from CAM delivered health education talks to the children and the parents of the Agta community. Prof. Melvin D. Cadao introduced the concepts of nutrition, different kinds of vegetable and fruits, as well as how to cook nutritious meals. Meanwhile, Prof. Charito Lilibeth A. Dator provided an in-depth discussion on proper hygiene practices particularly encouraging the children on the proper ways of washing their bodies and hands.

Adding a cultural touch to the event, the children of the community showcased native songs and dances, reflecting their daily lives and customs through their performances.

The event concluded with a donation drive organized by CAM faculty, CAM CERT, and their partner institution, Kiwanis International. They distributed hygiene kits, clothing, toys, and learning materials to the Agta tribe members.

SLSU is dedicated to support the communities of Indigenous Peoples (IPs); it is reflected not only in its efforts to facilitate their admission to the university but also in its community extension programs aimed at improving their quality of life.
