CHED commends SLSU’s global impact

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) acknowledged the commitment of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) to excellence and global impact by giving four prestigious awards.

On December 18, Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, the Director of the International Affairs and External Linkages Office (IAELO), represented SLSU during the CHED Internationalization (IZN) Awards 2024. The university received four awards, namely: (1) Top 2 Performing HEI in Internationalization for Resource Generation; (2) World’s Most Sustainable University 2024, as recognized in the UI Green Metric University Rankings; (3) EDUrank Best Universities Award 2024; and (4) Recognition as an HEI with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Accreditation.

These prestigious awards underscore SLSU’s continued commitment to excellence in higher education, global partnerships, sustainability, and quality standards.

CHTE tackles the conversion of SLSU Gumaca into a regular campus

The Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education (CHTE) discussed the conversion of SLSU Gumaca into a regular campus, along with other conversions and the establishment of state universities and colleges, on December 17.

Among the bills discussed was House Bill No. 10805, also known as an act converting the extension campus of the Southern Luzon State University in the Municipality of Gumaca, Province of Quezon into a regular campus and appropriating funds therefor, authored by Cong. Keith Micah Tan of the 4th District of Quezon, et.al.

During the public hearing, it was emphasized that all bills requesting the conversion will be approved provided that the SUCs will comply with the requirements, which include having Certificates of Program Compliance with all of its program offerings.

Currently, all programs of SLSU Gumaca have COPCs, which include a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies; a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics; a BSIT major in Computer Technology; and a BSBA major in Human Resource Management.

With this, the bill will be deliberated under a technical working group before proceeding to the first reading.

SLSU officials discuss SUC leveling updates and targets for FY 2025

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) officials held a meeting for SUC leveling updates and target setting for 2024 on December 12.

The Planning Office (PO), headed by Dir. Jed Frank Marqueses facilitated the meeting. Among the attendees were the University President, Dr. Frederick T. Villa; Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, OIC VP for Administrative and Financial Affairs; Dr. Dhenalyn A. Dejelo, OIC VP for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Erwin D. Villaverde, Chief Administrative Officer.

The morning session tackled key results under Area 5: Governance and Management, which was attended by the directors and representatives of the offices under Administrative and Financial Affairs.

Meanwhile, the afternoon session addressed Areas 1 and 2: Access and Equity, and Quality and Relevance of Instruction, which was attended by the offices under Academic Affairs, the deans, and campus directors.

These activities were conducted to meet the university’s institutional goals and objectives.

SLSU College of Medicine classes kick-off with 9 Students

After almost a decade of preparation, the newly established Southern Luzon State University - College of Medicine (COM) started its classes on December 9 with nine students.

Among the hundred application, 18 applicants passed the initial assessment, and 12 passed the overall qualification. Among them, nine students enrolled and agreed to render one (1) year of service in government public health office, government hospital, or any accredited government public health facility in their hometown or any underserved municipality in any province, for every scholarship year. This is in pursuant to Section 14 of the IRR of RA 11509.

Basic sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biostatistics, Histology, and Family Medicine, are amongst the subjects for the first semester. The first semester is scheduled to finish on May 13, 2025 and will resume on May 26 for the second semester.

CHED grants government permit for Doctor of Medicine program

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted Southern Luzon State University—College of Medicine (COM) a government permit to operate effective for AY 2024-2025.

The CHED Resolution 673-2024, COM can operate the first and second-year levels of the Doctor of Medicine program. On December 5, CHED Chairman, Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III signed Government Permit No. 19, s. 2024 provided that SLSU complies with the prescribed standards of instruction and other premises.

COM started its classes on December 9 with nine students. The first semester is set to finish on May 13, 2025. The second semester will begin on May 16.

The SLSU College of Medicine is the first state university in Quezon Province to offer a Doctor of Medicine program. With this, SLSU will be able to produce medical practitioners who will serve the geographically isolated and disadvantaged area of the province.

SLSU ranks 975th in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024

Out of 1,477 institutions across 95 countries, Southern Luzon State University ranked 975th in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024, a ranking system that assesses an institution's sustainability performance.

The UI GreenMetric recognized the university’s efforts in policy implementation on sustainable practices, earning the 41st rank over 63 universities and colleges in the country, 536th place out of 866 entries in Asia, and 975th in the world ranking.

The ranking shows that the university is committed to combating climate change by promoting and creating a greener university.

In the pipeline for approval of the BOR are SLSU’s R&D Center for Agri-Aqua Resources, Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy, Center for Mt. Banahaw Studies, and Design and Innovation Center.

SLSU grants financial assistance for 10 solo parents, persons with special needs

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with ten students who are solo parents, and persons with special needs for financial assistance on December 10.

During the opening remarks, OIC Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Dhenalyn Aquino-Dejelo, said her gratitude towards the administration who have made the scholarship possible. She emphasized the importance of the scholarship, which will hopefully encourage more students to pursue tertiary education.

Meanwhile, the university president, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, expressed admiration for the diligent students, particularly the beneficiaries. In the succeeding years, Dr. Villa pledged to add more beneficiaries.

Under the program, SLSU will provide financial assistance to the students with special needs, and solo parents. They will be given a cash incentive of Php 3,000 per month or Php 15,000 per semester. The grantee may enjoy the scholarship for four years provided that he/she will comply with the following terms: (1) a general weighted average of 2.50 or higher, and (2) abide with the rules and regulations of the university.

For the first implementation, the beneficiaries are as follows: seven from the Main Campus, and one each from SLSU Catanauan, SLSU Lucena, and SLSU Alabat. The ten grantees have met the evaluation criteria based on the review of the committee headed by Dr. Aurelio Teodoro D. Maguyon III, dean of the Office of Student Affairs and Services.

SLSU strengthens strategies for SUC Level IV goals

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) continues its push toward achieving SUC Level IV status as Planning Office (PO) Director Jed Frank Marqueses spearheaded a meeting with offices under the Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (REPDI) for a strategic alignment session on December 9.

The meeting focused on updates regarding SUC Leveling and aligning the targets of the Office of Research Services, Office of Extension Services, Office of Production Services, and the Innovation and Technology Support Services Office with the requirements for leveling.

Discussions included accomplishments for FY 2024 and the elaboration of physical targets for FY 2025, ensuring their Office Performance Commitment Review (OPCR) aligns with SUC leveling metrics and the university’s Strategic Development Plan for 2025–2030.

SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, Vice President for REPDI Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, and Officers-in-Charge Dr. Arvin N. Natividad (Administrative and Financial Affairs) and Dr. Dhenalyn A. Dejelo (Academic Affairs) were in attendance.

The SLSU PO plans to convene other key offices for similar alignment sessions before the end of the year, further cementing the University’s commitment to achieving excellence and meeting its institutional goals.

SLSU ICO launches data analytics training for a future-ready workforce

The Southern Luzon State University's Information and Communication Office (ICO) spearheaded a Basic Data Analytics Training Workshop on December 2 for faculty and employees designated as part of the ICO’s Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Resource Pool.

Dr. Arvin Natividad, OIC Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, delivered the message of the University President, emphasizing the importance of utilizing data effectively. “The University generates a vast amount of data, but the power lies in how that data is being used,” Dr. Natividad conveyed.“We need to foster a data-driven culture… where data is seen as a tool for improvement,” Dr. Villa emphasized, underscoring the university’s commitment to innovation and growth.

ICO Head April Arianne A. de Leon highlighted the training’s objective to prepare SLSU frontliners for future challenges and to promote career development through upskilling and cross-skilling.

Engr. Renato R. Maaliw III, DIT, a Professor from SLSU’s College of Engineering, served as the Resource Person, guiding participants through Python programming basics, data manipulation with Pandas, data extraction, and visualization techniques. Participants engaged in hands-on coding exercises with sample datasets provided by Prof. Maaliw, making the session interactive and practical.

The IEC Resource Pool was divided into two batches to ensure a focused learning experience. The first batch included representatives from offices under the University President, Academic Affairs, and external campuses.

Dr. Natividad closed the Batch 1 session by motivating participants to effect change in the workplace through continuous career improvement.

The second batch of training was held on December 3, 2024. The event is part of the ICO’s “Nudging to Create Change in the Workplace” workshop series, launched in October with budgetary support from the Faculty and Staff Development Program of the University.

SLSU Prexy, Alabat Mayor meet for potential collaboration

In response to the educational needs of the island, SLSU Alabat is in talks regarding the realization of its vision of expanding its services on course offerings and infrastructure and facility development.

In December 6, the Chief Executive of the municipality of Alabat, Hon. Mayor Jose Ramil R. Arquiza, together with SLSU-Alabat Campus Director Prof. Lyn Vargas-Tapan, met with SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa to discuss matters on the potential opening of the education course program in the future and the approval of the LGU for granting of a one-hectare of land for the campus’s extended operations.

Based on a series of surveys and needs analyses, high school graduates expressed preferences for choosing an education course as the college degree they want to pursue. This has also been proposed and backed by local government officials of the three island municipalities of Alabat, Perez, and Quezon.

Once materialized, the campus will soon be able to offer education course along with its flagship, Fisheries and ICT degrees, both accredited with the Certificate of Program Compliance by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This potential breakthrough is expected to benefit high school graduates in deciding for the program they will take.

Meanwhile, the granting of one-hectare land to SLSU was also discussed in the meeting, citing its legal processes and the impact it could create in the infrastructure development of the campus and how it can be utilized as a learning hub. While the municipal mayor took lead in these initiatives, the support of the Sangguniang Bayan has also been evident in realizing the success of these projects.

As the sole Higher Education Institution (HEI) on the island, SLSU Alabat always envisions accommodating as many enrollees from the island as possible, producing graduates who belong to low-income families, and uplifting the quality of their lives by entering numerous employment opportunities aligned to their degrees.
