Fireside Chat 2.0 sparks connection between SLSU community, local entrepreneurs

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its Technology Business Incubator (TBI), brought members of the University community closer to the experiences of local entrepreneurs through Fireside Chat 2.0 on September 17, at the main campus in Lucban, Quezon.

The TBI organized the activity to provide a space for conversations on entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and resilience grounded in actual business experiences. The session featured four entrepreneurs from Quezon Province: Ma. Louichiel S. Labat, President of Ouan’s The Farm Resort; Irene Rita M. Becerra, President of Vin Vie Integrated Farm Corporation; Antonio “Tonio” A. Hachaso, Owner of Tonio’s Sisig; and, Queen Anne Xyza A. Salayo, Owner of Banahaw Creations.

Through their stories, the invited entrepreneurs shared practical insights on building and managing businesses, responding to challenges, pursuing opportunities, and applying innovation in their enterprises. The conversation also provided a closer look at how science, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking can support businesses as they adapt to evolving needs and opportunities.

Students, faculty members, and staff also had opportunities to engage with the invited industry representatives through an open forum, creating a more direct exchange of experiences and perspectives between the academe and local enterprises.

More than sharing business stories, Fireside Chat 2.0 created a connection between academic learning and entrepreneurial practice. Through the initiative, SLSU TBI provided the University community with an opportunity to learn directly from local entrepreneurs and better understand how ideas, innovation, and experience can contribute to Quezon Province’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Extension projects underwent assessment and evaluation to strengthen community impact

Through the Office of Extension Services (OES) of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), the 3rd Extension Conference was held on September 16 at the REPDI Training Center, SLSU Main Campus, Lucban, Quezon.

During the event, external evaluators shared their insights on the initial and short-term impacts of the extension projects on the community. The conference brought together external experts to assess the completed and ongoing extension programs and projects implemented by SLSU faculty members across its campuses.

For the Agency In-House Review (AIHR) of Completed Extension Projects, the evaluators were Dr. Ande M. Luna, Community Extension and NSTP Chair, National University–Laguna; Asst. Prof. Kristia Lei A. Reyes, Director of Extension Services, Batangas State University; and Dr. Christopher C. Mantillas, Associate Professor, IGRD, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños.

For the Ongoing Extension Projects, the evaluators were Dr. Benedict O. Medina, Associate Professor IV, College of Arts and Sciences, Batangas State University; For. Carla O. Melodillar, University Researcher I, Forest Development Center, University of the Philippines Los Baños; and Ms. Rachell C. Gallano, Chairperson, Extension and Training Services, Laguna State Polytechnic University–Los Baños.

The completed extension projects presented during the conference were: 1) Kalinga at Kabuhayan sa Kababaihan: Paghahanda para sa Kinabukasan; 2) VIRUS: Vigilant Innovations and Reinforcements for User Safety against cyber-related problems in the 21st century; 3) Capacitating Coastal Barangays in Mauban, Quezon on Management Development Plan; 4) CTEhanan at Turuan: A Training Program for Research Capability Enrichment among Selected Senior High School Teachers in Lucban, Quezon; 5) Nutritional product Utilization Towards Restoring Income sources for the Community (NUTRI-C); 6) 3FPs: Food Processing, Food Packaging, and Food Product labeling among the Barangay Underserved Residents; 7) Habi agta: Hanap Buhay mula kay Inang kalikasan para sa mga Agta; and, 8) Mentoring the Sports mentors: A Program towards Building Champions!.

Simultaneously, OES conducted a review of the ongoing programs and projects, providing inputs to further improve the implementation of their deliverables and outcomes. The ongoing projects presented were: 1) CREATE: Community Resources for Entrepreneurial Advancement through Technology and Education; 2) Techno-Psych Serv: Technology-Based Psychological Services and Mental Health First Aid Training for Persons with Mental Disability (PWMD), Caregivers, and Community; 3) DINSULAN: Quezon Writers Workshop; 4) Bake & Brew (B&B): Empowering Solo Parents of Lucban with New Skills and Sustainable Livelihoods; 5) Bulati 2: Kalinisan Ay Palaganapin, Kalusugan Ay Pagyamanin; and, 6) Island Pineapple: Advancing Production through Sustainable Operations.

All presenters will receive a certificate, while exceptional extension projects will also receive cash prizes. Announcement of winners will be held on September 17 during the closing ceremony of the university’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW) celebration.

SLSU Research Congress showcases faculty, student research

In line with this year’s theme of Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW), “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Office of Research Services (ORS), spearheaded the 5th Research Congress on September 16.

The Congress provides a platform for the evaluation and dissemination of research outputs, featuring 17 faculty and employee papers, 13 student papers, and 30 poster entries.

The Agency In-House Review (AIHR) of Research Projects allowed faculty researchers to present their studies for evaluation, while the Student Research Conference featured student research presentations and encouraged academic exchange. The AIHR Poster Competition, meanwhile, provided researchers with an avenue to visually present their findings and innovations.

Experts from various fields were invited as external evaluators. For Category 1: Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the evaluators were Asst. Prof. Mark Louie Tabunan of the University of Northern Philippines in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Dr. Racquel G. Agustin of Cavite State University; and Dr. Delon A. Ching of Laguna State Polytechnic University.

For Category 2: Natural Sciences, Agriculture, and Innovation, the evaluators included Dr. Lloyd O. Balinado of Cavite State University, Dr. Raymond S. Bermudez of LGU Tayabas City, and Dr. Reniel S. Pamplona of the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Aside from knowledge sharing, the Congress also recognized outstanding research contributions. Participants received certificates, while outstanding entries were set to receive awards and corresponding cash prizes. The winners were scheduled to be announced on September 17 during the Closing Ceremony.

Through the annual Congress, SLSU ensures that the University’s research undertakings remain of high quality. Through constructive feedback, individual initiatives are enriched and the reputation of SLSU as a hub of scholarly excellence and innovation is further strengthened.

SLSU, Wadhwani Foundation ignite faculty capacity in entrepreneurship education

In line with the observance of this year’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Week, the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA), in partnership with the Wadhwani Foundation, conducted the Wadhwani Entrepreneurship (WEN) Ignite Trainers Training Program on September 16.

Lucresio D. Delgado, Southeast Asia Regional Director of the Wadhwani Foundation, served as the Resource Person for the training held at the SLSU Main Campus in Lucban, Quezon. He equipped faculty members with knowledge, approaches, skills, and techniques to administer entrepreneurship education more effectively.

Beyond capacitating the participants, the program also provided them with the opportunity to become Certified Entrepreneurship Educators.

In the long run, the training aims to strengthen the entrepreneurship education system in the university through the development of qualified educators.

SULÉO 2026 brought SLSU technologies closer to commercialization

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) brought university-developed technologies closer to potential markets and industry partners through SULÉO 2026, a Technology Commercialization Pitching Competition held on September 16, 2026, at the Banahaw Hall as part of the University’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Week celebration.

With the theme “Where Tech Meets Its Next Act,” SULÉO 2026 also provided a platform for the said technologies with existing intellectual property protection to explore their commercialization readiness and possible pathways for adoption. The initiative was led by the Innovation and Technology Support Services Office, in partnership with the DOST PCAARRD RAISE Program Phase 2, SLSU Technology Business Incubator, and other concerned SLSU offices.

The competition followed a multi-stage process that included the identification and screening of intellectual property registered technologies, team formation, technology immersion, mentoring, and commercialization coaching before the Grand Pitching Competition. Participating teams worked with faculty inventors or technology mentors in developing commercialization proposals and strengthening their understanding of the technologies they represented.

During the pitching competition, teams presented the problems addressed by their technologies, value propositions, potential customers and market opportunities, competitive advantages, commercialization strategies, and possible industry or investment linkages. The activity challenged participants to look beyond the technical features of an innovation and communicate how it could respond to actual market needs and move toward practical application.

The following technologies emerged as the finalists of the technology pitching competition: (1) Banana Preservation Device, (2) Kalumpit Wine, (3) Notification System Device for Harvesting of By-products of Stingless Bees, (4) Areca Leaf Sheath Fiber, (5) Improved Rollator for Persons with Ambulatory Dysfunction, (6) Ready-to-eat Breakfast Cereals from the Blends of Winged Bean and Rice Flour, and (7) Mushroom Oatmeal Cookies.

SULÉO 2026 also created opportunities for promising technologies to advance toward further technology transfer and commercialization support, including technology refinement, industry engagement, business development, incubation, market validation, and participation in other innovation platforms.

Through SULÉO 2026, SLSU strengthened the connection between research, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and commercialization, giving university developed technologies a clearer path from research outputs to innovations with potential value for industries and communities.

ICO maps a new path for science communication at STW 2026

Science communication took an interactive turn at Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) this year as the Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW) introduced a one-of-a-kind booth experience—the ICOurse Map.

Powered by the SLSU Information and Communications Office (ICO), the initiative transformed the exhibits into an interactive journey activity, encouraging students, faculty, employees, and other stakeholders to explore the booth exhibitions and acquire new learnings from them.

The ICOurse map journey began at the registration area, where participants scanned a QR code to provide their information. Then, they took an ICOurse Map that served as their guide throughout the exhibits. They then visited the respective booths of the eight colleges and nine campuses, collecting stamps while exploring the research products and innovations showcased in each exhibit.

The map encouraged active participation of the booth-goers, particularly among students. After completing their stamp collection, participants could visit the ICO Booth and exchange their maps for a chance to win a prize through a virtual “Gatcha” game developed by ICO. Prizes included one-year access to Canva premium, 64 GB flashdrives, notebooks, and more.

Likewise, the ICO Booth also gave visitors an opportunity to capture and share their STW journey through a video recording setup.

Beyond SLSU’s colleges and campuses, external exhibitors were also invited to join the activity, with Southern Tagalog Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research, Development and Extension Consortium, Philippine Coconut Authority - Region IV-A (CALABARZON), CE-LOGIC, and Panga Live Institution showcasing their respective products and activities.

SLSU introduces CWMU to protect creative works

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO), officially launched its Creative Works Management Unit (CMWU), which aims to protect, manage, promote, and commercialize creative works.

The Unit can assist stakeholders, particularly students, faculty, researchers, artists, performers, writers, designers, filmmakers, digital content creators, and cultural advocates, in transforming their creative works into more purposeful and impactful outputs. CMWU accepts works such as literature, poetry, films, digital content, music, dance, theater, painting, photography, and crafts, among others.

CMWU is aligned with RA 11904, also known as the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act (PIDA), which requires the promotion and support of systems that strengthen the management, protection, development, and commercialization of creative output and intellectual property.

CMWU was formally introduced during the opening of the 2026 Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (STW) celebration on September 15.

SLSU officially launches Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its Office of Research Services (ORS), officially introduced the Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy (CSIPP) during the opening program of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Week 2026 celebration on September 15.

Under BOR Resolution No. 10, series of 2026, approved on April 22, 2026, CSIPP aims to become a leading hub for evidence-based policymaking, community-centered innovation, and social research with a cultural foundation in the CALABARZON Region. CSIPP is the first center in the region that integrates Tagalog Culture and Arts Studies as a strategic basis for its research and innovation agenda.

The event also presented CSIPP’s first Center Chief, Dr. Noreen P. Echague of the College of Arts and Sciences. Her appointment was established by virtue of Special Order No. 134, s. 2026.

CSIPP operates under ORS, in coordination with the service units of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation (OVP REPDI), bolstering SLSU’s commitment to empower communities through socially relevant, innovative, and transformative scholarship.

SLSU ICOwentuhan, PIA Quezon spotlight Technology Business Incubator services

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Information and Communications Office (ICO), in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)–Quezon and the SLSU Technology Business Incubator (TBI), launched ICOwentuhan through a pilot episode featuring TBI services for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) on September 15.

In her opening message, ICO Head Ms. April Arianne A. de Leon described ICOwentuhan as a platform for “kwentong may kwenta sa komunidad,” bringing useful and relevant information about SLSU's programs, services, and opportunities closer to the communities it serves.

SLSU President Frederick T. Villa likewise described the initiative as “an opportunity to listen, exchange ideas, build partnership, and tell stories that matter to our people.”

Conducted in a press conference format similar to Kapihan with PIA Quezon, the pilot episode was hosted by PIA Quezon Information Officer Cecille C. Maloles and featured Dr. Jennifer Edytha J. Lagrazon, TBI Center Chief/Manager; Mr. Giehway R. Liwanag, TBI Science Research Specialist; and Dr. Nona D. Nagares, an SLSU TBI incubatee and owner of Nnovate Food Products.

The discussion highlighted how the SLSU TBI supports entrepreneurs and provides opportunities for MSMEs to develop their products, strengthen their businesses, and access innovation and technology support.

The episode was livestreamed through the official pages of SLSU, PIA CALABARZON, and PIA Quezon, with media partners including Radyo Pilipinas, STANUP Balikatan, 101.5 Cool FM DWDD, DZRV 846 Radyo Veritas – Boses ng Barangay, Mass Media Broadcasting System, NiDAS TOUCH, Radyo Kaisahan, Quezon Chronos, Talk of the Town, and Life Radio DZAT 1512 Southern Luzon.

Closing the pilot episode, Presidential Management Coordinating Office Director Maritess O. Villa affirmed the University's commitment to sustaining ICOwentuhan as a platform for bringing SLSU's services and initiatives to wider audiences.

SLSU advances research commercialization through spin-off policy, DTI partnership, technology licensing

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) strengthened its pathways for research commercialization, technology transfer, and enterprise development through the launching of the 2026 SLSU Spin-Off Policy, the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Quezon, and the ceremonial signing of Technology Licensing Agreements with Amarich Marketing International during the opening of 2026 Science, Technology, and Innovation Week on September 15.

The 2026 SLSU Spin-Off Policy provided a clearer institutional framework for transforming University-developed research outputs and intellectual property into viable enterprises. It established a pathway for researcher employees to commercialize intellectual property, registered technologies, products, and processes developed through SLSU research.

SLSU also formalized its partnership with DTI Quezon to strengthen the connection between the University’s research and innovation capabilities and the development needs of micro, small, and medium enterprises in Quezon Province. The collaboration covers areas such as innovation and technology adoption, technology transfer and commercialization, startup and enterprise incubation, intellectual property management, product development, entrepreneurship, market access, and research and development.

Further advancing technology transfer, SLSU signed Technology Licensing Agreements with Amarich Marketing International for the commercialization of its Nipa Sugar and Nipa Syrup technologies. The agreements granted Amarich Marketing International nonexclusive and nontransferable licenses to adopt, produce, and commercialize the technologies while SLSU retained ownership of the intellectual property.

The agreements also established mechanisms for technical assistance, training, quality control, and commercialization support to help move the University-developed technologies toward wider market application.

Through policy launching, government partnership, and technology licensing, SLSU strengthened the link between research and practical application, creating clearer pathways for University-generated technologies to move from development toward enterprise, industry use, and broader community benefit.
