On Air, SLSU switches on DWEH 88.5 Yuyan Campus FM Radio

The 19th Charter Day celebration of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) also marked the ceremonial switch-on of the DWEH 88.5 SLSU Educational FM Broadcast Station, Yuyan Campus FM Radio, March 16.

According to its Project Leader and College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy Dean Chona V. Cayabat, DBA, the university established the campus radio station to train future media professionals and promote knowledge-driven community development.

Dr. Frederick T. Villa, who led the ceremonial switch-on of the FM Radio station, emphasized the initiative’s significance for stakeholders and students.

“This initiative marks another milestone in our continuing journey to strengthen communication, education, and community engagement within and beyond our university. The university radio is more than a platform for broadcasting voices…this is a place for unbiased learning, creativity, and service,” said President Villa.

The university assigned the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the College of Engineering (CEn), and the College of Administration, Business, Hospitality, and Accountancy (CABHA) to jointly manage the station’s technical and program operations under the direct supervision of the Office of the University President while implementing strict monitoring, content review, and quality assurance measures.

Meanwhile, the entry of Kent Chyron E. Roasa of the College of Engineering stood out among the eleven entries in the radio station’s logo design competition, which was announced during the opening program earlier. The said logo will be subjected to a few enhancements before it becomes the official logo of DWEH 88.5.

Moreover, Dr. Cayabat expressed hope that the station will eventually become a self-sustaining and profitable commercial radio station in the coming years.

In retrospect, the Committee on Legislative Franchises approved the 25-year radio and television station franchise of SLSU on August 31, 2021, with full support from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Kapisanan ng mga Broadcaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).

Members of the Administrative Council, together with representatives from various offices, colleges, and campuses were also present to support the event.

Sharing the Load: Inside SLSU FA’s GABAY-ALALAY Initiative for Faculty and Students

At Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), a quiet but powerful partnership among the SLSU Faculty Association (FA), the Provincial Government of Quezon (PESO), and the Department of Labor and Employment Provincial Office of Quezon launched GABAY‑ALALAY (Government‑Assisted Bridge for Academic Yearning – Aspiring Learners Assisting Learning and Alleviating Your Load) to relieve faculty of routine burdens while giving students meaningful work experience.

To ease faculty workload, two beneficiaries under the Government Internship Program (GIP) and 220 beneficiaries under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) were deployed across the main and satellite campuses. The students gain paid, supervised work that builds workplace skills and eases financial pressure, while faculty reclaim time for lesson planning, research, and student mentoring.

Sarah Visalo, a SPES beneficiary from the College of Engineering, said, “Instead of wala pong ginagawa sa free time is yun (SPES) na lang po ang gawin kasi magkaka-assistance pa po ta’s makakatulong po [sa family] ta’s mai-increase sa knowledge about sa work related activities (Instead of doing nothing in our free time, we can work through SPES; we get assistance, help our families, and increase our knowledge about work‑related activities).”

Gino A. Cabrera, President of the SLSU FA and Faculty Regent of SLSU, linked the initiative to the association’s goals “to continue advocating for reasonable workloads, equitable distribution of assignments, greater attention to mental health, and policies that recognize faculty as whole persons—not just producers of academic outputs.”

The project ran from October to December 2025 and will be implemented again in 2026. If maintained, the program could quietly redefine campus norms by sharing administrative responsibilities, ensuring student work has purpose, and acknowledging faculty as whole professionals whose time and wellbeing are equally important.

SLSU approves impact assessment for extension projects, launches new research projects

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has approved four impact assessment studies to evaluate the effectiveness of its completed extension programs, as part of its commitment to quality and impactful community extension services.

The Office of Research Services (ORS) recently held an Inception Meeting and Research Contract Signing at the REPDI Training Center in SLSU Lucban, formally launching institutional core-funded projects designed to measure the outcomes of key extension initiatives.

The following are the approved impact assessment studies:

• AKBAY (Assessment of Key and Baseline Extension Program Areas Yields) for “Alalay sa mga Katutubong Badjau tungo sa pag-Ahon at pagYabong (AKBAY)”

• Amiel Jansen Demeterial, Jed Frank Marqueses, Maricel Lingatong, Irish T. Valdeavilla, Meryl A. Villaruel

• Impact Assessment of SLSU College of Arts and Sciences’ Extension Project Titled “Enhancement Training Program for Senior High School Mathematics Teachers”

• Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr, Michelle I. Gensaya, Anthony L. Empamano, Jaquelyn Merjudio, Ryan Alcoreza

• Navigating on the Impact of Microentrepreneurial Activities on Women’s Empowerment

The event also introduced three newly approved institutional research projects:

This collaboration aims to foster economic growth, innovation, and academic engagement in Quezon Province, strengthening the university’s role in community development and industry support.

Dr. Nicanor L. Guinto, ORS Director, opened the event by commending the project proponents on their approved research projects. Thanking everyone for their efforts in crafting each proposal, Ms. Jean Venelie G. Raga, Education Program Specialist I, presented each newly approved project and outlined the contents of the SLSU research contract. At the same time, Ms. Jillian H. Bautista, Science Research Assistant, discussed the progress and budget monitoring procedures for the university’s ongoing research with the Office of Research Services (ORS).

Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., Director of the Office of Extension Services, delivered closing remarks, thanking participants for their contributions to advancing SLSU’s research and extension missions.

The approval of these studies highlights SLSU’s dedication to ensuring meaningful, measurable outcomes from its extension programs. By systematically assessing impact and refining strategies, the university aims to strengthen its role in community development and sustainable progress.

SLSU, General Nakar partners for IP student scholarships

On April 8, 2025, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) and the Municipality of General Nakar, Quezon formally entered into a partnership through a Virtual Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing Ceremony for Project T.I.K.A.S. (Tungo sa Integrasyon ng Karunungan at Abilidad ng mga Student IPs).

The initiative is part of the approved institutional research collaboration between SLSU and the Development Academy of the Philippines titled “Empowering Indigenous Peoples through Higher Education: A Multi-Sectoral Initiative for Career Exploration, Readiness, and College Admission,” which aims to provide opportunities for Indigenous Peoples (IPs) youth to pursue higher education.

This partnership goes beyond a formal agreement. It represents a shared commitment to uplift and empower IP youth by integrating knowledge and skills with cultural identity. At the heart of Project T.I.K.A.S. lies the belief that when education is rooted in one’s heritage and community, it becomes a powerful instrument for transformation.

The 22 incoming first-year IP students in AY 2025-2026, who are residents of General Nakar, Quezon, were identified to receive scholarships and academic support from the local government unit as they pursue their college education. Moreover, the Municipality of General Nakar has committed to providing logistical support and sustainable financial assistance to eligible student IP beneficiaries, ensuring that the vision of Project T.I.K.A.S. is realized on the ground.

The MOA was signed by Dr. Fredrick T. Villa, SLSU President, and Hon. Eliseo R. Ruzol, Municipal Mayor of General Nakar, represented by Ms. Jerona Easter Q. Porras, Administrative Officer V. The ceremonial signing was witnessed by Dr. Noreen P. Echague, Project Leader; Dr. Violeto N. Coronacion, Director of Infanta Campus; Project Team Members; and Ms. Marjorie Ann D. Atienza, LLB, Legal Assistant II of the University Legal Counsel.

Through Project T.I.K.A.S., SLSU reaffirms its commitment to building inclusive and transformative educational opportunities for Indigenous youth, where knowledge, culture, and purpose converge to shape a better and more empowered future.

SLSU emerges as 1st runner-up FOI Champion

Once again, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) was recognized as the first runner-up under the Freedom of Information (FOI)-SUC Category Awards, held during the celebration of the 8th year of the FOI Program implementation in the Philippines on November 25.

President Frederick T. Villa; University Board Secretary, Ms. Aurora L. Sumague; Records Officer, Ms. Eliza P. Beltran; and Executive Assistant, Mr. Jay Mel Nicomedez, received the award at the Hilton Manila Hotel, 1 Newport Blvd., Pasay City.

Last year, SLSU also received the same award in the FOI Champion Category for the SUC. Meanwhile, Ms. Sumague was also hailed as the Best FOI Officer during the event.

FOI Awards is an annual event that brings FOI officers and advocates from government agencies in the Executive Branch and institutions, individuals, and civil society organizations to acknowledge the indispensable role of multi-sector implementers in the institutions of the FOI program in the country.
