DSWD IV-A recognizes SLSU extension initiatives for impactful community engagement

The Southern Luzon State University was one of the awardees for the 2025 SIpag, Galing, Liksi, at Alab (SIGLA) Awards hosted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV-A.

The SIGLA award recognized SLSU’s outstanding contributions, innovative practices, and impactful collaborations in support of the DSWD’s efforts in delivering community services. The university was specifically cited for its significant role in advancing the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Quezon Province through capacity-building initiatives, extension programs, and academic support.

The ceremony took place in Sta. Cruz, Manila, January 13, with the following SLSU representatives: Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, Development, and Innovation; Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., Director of the Office of Extension Services; and Mr. Ryan A. Alcoreza, a technical staff member from the same office.

Assoc. Prof. Cabrera joins the online judges for the International Conference on Special Education

Associate Prof. Gino A. Cabrera of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) - College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) was chosen to join the online panel of judges for the 2nd Innovation of Disability-Inclusive Education Competition (iDIEC) 2025.

Assoc. Prof. Cabrera was among the exceptional individuals selected from across Southeast Asia. Along with the online judges, he had reviewed and evaluated poster and video submissions from the participants.

This showcases his commitment to supporting the promotion of inclusive education and acknowledging innovative educational practices that have a significant impact on students with special needs.

The event was organized by the Southeast Asian Minister of Education Organization Regional Center for Special Educational Needs (SEAMEO SEN).

SLSU extends community service to BJMP Lucena

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its Lucena Campus, will be extending its community service to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) - Lucena City.

On July 22, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed for the conduct of extension activities on organic gardening, food production, and visual graphic design. This program will serve as a transformative experience for the 25 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who were selected as beneficiaries of the BJMP Lucena.

Under the agreement, SLSU will facilitate the extension project, while the partnering agency will provide support and the venue.

The MOA was signed by the SLSU President, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, and BJMP’s Female Dormitory Jail Warden, JSINSP Clariza P Ebora; under the presence of the Project Leader from SLSU Lucena, Dr. Maria Fara A. Cadeliña, and BJMP’s Unit Welfare Development Officer, JO2 Jessica Marquez.

SLSU gains full ownership of SSF on Meat Processing and Nipa Sweeteners Production

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) formally received the Certificate of Ownership for two key Shared Service Facilities—the Meat Processing SSF at the Main Campus and the Nipa Sweeteners Production SSF at the Infanta Campus—during the Business Continuity Plan Seminar for SSF Cooperators held on July 9, 2025, at Nawawalang Paraiso Resort, Tayabas City, July 9.

On behalf of SLSU Main Campus, Ms. Anna Rose Julve and Mr. Allan Julius Bobila received the certificate, while Mx. Paul Dela Rosa represented SLSU Infanta Campus. The awarding ceremony was part of the Department of Trade and Industry’s MSME Month Celebration and marks the official transfer of ownership to the university. With these facilities now under its stewardship, the university is poised to expand its support for local enterprises, promote sustainable production, and deliver meaningful public service through education and community engagement.

The Meat Processing SSF continues to serve as a learning facility for students and a resource center for local farmers and cooperatives engaged in meat production. The Nipa Sweeteners Production SSF supports the university’s initiatives in developing natural sweeteners from nipa sap and promotes sustainable food innovation and coastal enterprise growth.

The BCP Seminar highlights the importance of building operational resilience among MSMEs and integrates the role of shared service facilities in ensuring enterprise sustainability. The seminar emphasizes how preparedness and access to technology help businesses remain competitive and responsive to changing environments.

SLSU expresses its appreciation to DTI for its continued support and partnership. With these facilities now under university ownership, SLSU strengthens its commitment to delivering education, research, and extension services that directly benefit communities and contribute to local and regional development.

SLSU expands supervisory training to another batch of employees

To strengthen supervisory effectiveness within its workforce, the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Faculty and Staff Development Program (FSDP) of the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), initiated the second wave of its 32-hour training for the Directors, Deans, Heads of Office, and other non-teaching personnel across its various departments from May 5 to 8.

Participants underwent the course to enhance their supervisory skills, boost team performance, and foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and customer-centricity. Additionally, the training aimed to identify and nurture potential leaders within the institution.

Civil Service Commission (CSC) Training Assistant, Ms. Joanne R. Penascosas, facilitated the training proper, whereas Dir. Lily Beth L. Majomot and Dir. Charity F. Arevalo served as subject matter experts, guiding attendees through strategies essential for effective leadership and organizational management.

Similar to the first seminar-workshop, this Supervisory Development Course is expected to contribute to enhanced supervisory competencies, improved team productivity, and increased employee satisfaction and retention, among others.

Meanwhile, another batch of employees is set to undergo training to enhance their knowledge and skills as university front liners.

SLSU Admins undergo CSC Supervisory Development Course

Through the initiative of the Human Resource and Management Office of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) under the Faculty and Staff Development Program (FSDP), administrative officers, and heads of offices underwent the training, “Enhancing Supervisory Effectiveness: A Training and Development Initiative,” held on April 22-25 at the SLSU Business Resource Center, Lucban, Quezon.

During the opening message of Dr. Frederick T. Villa, University President, he recognized the importance of the event, which is an opportunity for the participants to be equipped with knowledge and skills to lead with compassion, among others.

The four-day training was facilitated by the Civil Service Commission Regional Office IV-A (CSC RO IVA) through the subject matter experts, Dir. Lily Beth L. Majomot and Ms. Emma B. Barerra, and CSC Training Assistant, Ms. Joanne R. Penascosas. The course focused on enhancing personal effectiveness, managing one’s career, becoming a supervisor, supervision and management, and organizational communication, among others. With this training, employees are expected to improve their ability to lead, to create a better working environment, and to provide better service to the stakeholders of the institution.

At the closing ceremony, participants shared their key takeaways from the training sessions. Office supervisors, Dr. Catherine L. Guia of the Accounting Office and Prof. Mariebeth P. Seño of the Registrar’s Office, both expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the course amidst their experience as directors.

Ms. Margarita L. Placino, HRMO Director, and Dr. Helene D. Daya thanked the speakers and the attendees for the successful event. Both emphasized that more capability training will be conducted to further enhance the service of the university.

Moreover, the members of the Administrative Council (ADCO) and frontliners are scheduled separately for a training session applicable to their job responsibilities.

‎Records Custodians undergo training for records counter disaster preparedness

Designated record custodians from the different campuses, colleges, and offices underwent in-house training from April 7 to 8.

‎The two-day training tackled records counter disaster preparedness and business continuity. Through the initiative of the Records Office of Southern Luzon State University, resource speakers from the National Archives of the Philippines (NAP) impart their knowledge and expertise on the subject.

‎Mr. Gerald F. Requesto, Training Specialist II under the NAP Training and Information Division, discussed the overview of records disaster preparedness and business continuity. Meanwhile, Ms. Ma. Noida V. Bañares, Senior Archivist under the NAP Archives Preservation Division, focused on the disaster response and recovery.

‎During the workshop proper, the participants assessed and analyzed their records according to prioritization, among others.

‎With the training, the employees, particularly the records custodians, can equip themselves with knowledge and put it into practice when disaster occurs
