SLSU and DTI-Quezon Hold Exploratory Meeting for Potential MOA

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Quezon held an exploratory meeting to discuss a potential Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to strengthen collaboration in research, innovation, and business development. The meeting was attended by Ms. Julieta Tadiosa, CESO V, Provincial Director of DTI-Quezon, Dr. Marissa C. Esperal, Vice President for Research, Extension, Production, and Development, and Innovation (REPDI), and For. Eraldwin A. Dimailig, Director of the Office of Production Services.

Mr. Aeriel Gilbert P. Dimaranan, Crafts Education Demonstrator I, presented on behalf of the Office of Production Services, highlighting the partnership’s objectives. Ms. Anna Marie V. Quincina, Division Chief of Business Development Division of DTI-Quezon, provided an overview of past and ongoing collaborations, while Ms. Honeylee Eclavea, Senior Trade Industry Development Specialist, discussed key points for the proposed MOA.

The proposed collaboration aims to enhance product innovation through improved packaging, design, and labeling for MSMEs. Business incubation and mentorship programs will be developed to support startups and aspiring entrepreneurs. Research and development initiatives will focus on improving product quality, processing techniques, and certification compliance. Agri-based product processing and commercialization will help add value to local agricultural products such as coconut, cacao, and coffee. Enterprise training programs will equip MSMEs with essential technical, managerial, and marketing skills, while internship opportunities will provide students with industry exposure and hands-on experience.

This collaboration aims to foster economic growth, innovation, and academic engagement in Quezon Province, strengthening the university’s role in community development and industry support.

Empowering Women Through Soap Making: SLSU and LGU Mauban Collaborate for Community Training

Mauban, Quezon — In a remarkable initiative to empower local women and promote sustainable practices, the SLSU Office of Production Services, in collaboration with LGU Mauban, organized a hands-on soap making training for the Women’s Association of Brgy. Rosario. This training took place on June 18, 2024, drawing enthusiastic participation from the community.

The primary focus of the workshop was the utilization of the Katmon fruit (Dillenia philippinensis), a native and culturally significant resource known for its medicinal properties and unique fragrance. Participants were introduced to the entire soap making process, from preparing the Katmon fruit to mixing ingredients and molding the soap. This hands-on experience ensured that every participant gained practical skills and confidence.

The event began with an informative session by Ms. Charlene Mae Daya on the basics of soap making and the economic potential of using locally sourced ingredients. Emphasis was placed on sustainable practices, highlighting how the Katmon fruit can be transformed into a valuable product. This not only reduces reliance on imported materials but also encourages the community to explore and capitalize on their natural resources.

Beyond the technical aspects, the training included guidance on basic business principles and marketing strategies, equipping participants with the knowledge to potentially turn soap making into a viable micro-enterprise. The entrepreneurial segment of the workshop covered product development, branding, and customer outreach, providing a comprehensive understanding of how to commercialize their new skills.

The highlight of the day was the showcase of the final products. Participants proudly displayed the beautifully crafted soaps they had made, a testament to their hard work, creativity, and newly acquired skills. The session concluded with For. Eraldwin Dimailig sharing his words of advice and recommendations to expand their knowledge and use other fruits that can be used within Mauban.

Representatives from the LGU Mauban and SLSU expressed their appreciation for the participants’ enthusiasm and commitment. Certificates of participation were awarded, recognizing the women’s dedication and achievements.

This initiative underscores the importance of community collaboration and sustainable practices. By leveraging local resources and fostering entrepreneurial skills, the soap making training has opened new economic opportunities for the women of Brgy. Rosario, empowering them to contribute to the community’s development. This event is a shining example of how education and community support can drive sustainable growth and improve livelihoods.

Empowering Dumagat Remontado Community: Nursery Establishment and Sustainable Forestry Training by the Office of Production Services in Partnership with General Nakar Sustainable Integrated Area Development Project Office

In a collaborative effort led by the Office of Production Services, headed by For.Eraldwin A. Dimailig, together with his staff, Mr. Aeriel Gilbert P. Dimaranan, Mr. Edilberto A. Juarez and Mr. Dante Palmero, in Barangay Lumutan, General Nakar, Quezon, a transformative initiative has been launched to empower the Dumagat Remontado Community. This initiative, conducted in partnership with the Local Government Unit's General Nakar Sustainable Integrated Area Development (GNSIAD) Project Office, headed by Ms. Liwayway Espetero, aims to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods through Nursery Establishment Management, Seedling Production, and Bamboo Propagation Training.

The project, tailored specifically for the Dumagat Remontado Community, represents a significant step towards holistic community development and environmental conservation. Through hands-on training sessions, community members are acquiring essential skills in sustainable forestry practices, including the establishment and management of nurseries, the production of high-quality seedlings, and the propagation of bamboo—a valuable resource in the region.

This initiative holds immense promise in several key areas. Firstly, it empowers the Dumagat Remontado Community to actively engage in environmental conservation efforts within their ancestral lands. By equipping community members with the knowledge and tools necessary for sustainable land management, the initiative aims to enhance the protection and preservation of the natural environment.

Furthermore, the training program places a strong emphasis on the integration of indigenous knowledge and practices. By honoring and preserving the cultural heritage of the Dumagat Remontado people, the initiative not only strengthens cultural identity but also instills a sense of pride and ownership in environmental stewardship among community members.

SLSU Clonal Nursery Demonstrates Commitment to Environmental Conservation Through Tree Donation

In a powerful display of environmental stewardship, the SLSU Clonal Nursery has reaffirmed its dedication to conservation efforts by donating a significant number of native trees to VC Green Keepers Inc., a local organization known for its commitment to maintaining green spaces and promoting sustainability. This collaboration marks a milestone in the university's ongoing mission to foster ecological awareness and preserve natural habitats.

Amidst growing concerns about climate change and biodiversity loss, initiatives that prioritize the protection and restoration of ecosystems are more crucial than ever. Recognizing this urgency, the SLSU Clonal Nursery, renowned for its expertise in cultivating indigenous plant species, has taken proactive steps to contribute to these vital efforts.

On March 11, 2024, representatives from SLSU Clonal Nursery, led by For. Eraldwin A. Dimailig presented a diverse selection of native trees to VC Green Keepers Inc. The donation, consisting of 100 seedlings of various species including Banaba, Balitbitan, Bagawak-Morado, Kalumpitm Katmon, and Banaybanay, is aimed at enriching local green spaces, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating environmental degradation.

For. Dimailig, Director of Office of Production Services and Project Leader of SLSU’s Clonal Nursery, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “This will facilitate the tie up of Southern Luzon State University to those cities that need abundant green space for the development of sustainable cities of the country and this is also to promote the native trees for ecosystem restoration.”.

The native trees provided by SLSU Clonal Nursery are specially selected for their adaptability to the region’s climate and soil conditions, ensuring their resilience and long-term survival. This strategic approach aligns with the nursery’s broader mission of promoting sustainable landscaping practices and preserving native biodiversity.

In response to the donation, former Vice Mayor Tony Espiritu and representative from VC Green Keepers Inc. expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “We are thrilled to receive this generous donation from SLSU Clonal Nursery. These native trees will play a vital role in our ongoing efforts to green urban areas, improve air quality, and create natural habitats for wildlife.”

On January 19, 2024, the Office of Production Services - Sanitation Facility, led by Prof. Vanessa Cadeliña, conducted a benchmarking activity at Al Dawah Producers Cooperative's Oil Distillery in Lopez, Quezon. This activity is aimed at the development of future sanitation products by integrating it with essential oil distillation.

We are grateful for the assistance of Mr. Benjamin Villaos and Ms. Chelita Alcantara for showing us the facility and the process of making essential oils.

On December 21, 2023, For. Eraldwin Dimailig, project leader of SLSU Clonal Nursery, engaged with our participants from Al Dawah Producers Cooperative to cultivate a deeper understanding of the role tree cloning plays in mitigating climate change, enhancing carbon sequestration, and fostering a harmonious coexistence between humanity and the natural world.

Mr. Edilberto Juarez and Mr.Emilio Ceripulo, both clonal nursery staff, guided our participants on exploring how tree cloning technology can be used to preserve and propagate, they taught each participant hands-on from cutting to planting.

PG-ENRO-Quezon Benchmarking Activity at SLSU Clonal Facility

Dimailig, project leader of Clonal Seedling Facility of Southern Luzon State University, assisted the Environment and Natural Resources Office of Quezon (PG-ENRO-Quezon) in their benchmarking activity in the Clonal Nursery of SLSU. Forester Dimailig gave orientation and explained to PG-ENRO-Quezon the operational management of the nursery.

PG-ENRO-Quezon will be establishing a Provincial Seedling Nursery which will serve as a source of planting materials for the reforestation/tree growing activities of the municipalities and cities in the province.

In connection with the Science and Technology Week and in an effort to promote environmental sustainability and harness the potential of bamboo as a versatile resource, the Office of Production Services of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) recently organized a comprehensive Bamboo Seminar. The event, held on October 27, 2023, brought together local community members to explore the myriad benefits and applications of bamboo cultivation.

Bamboo, often referred to as “green gold,” is renowned for its rapid growth, strength, and eco-friendly properties. Throughout the seminar, participants delved into various topics, including bamboo propagation techniques, sustainable harvesting practices, and innovative uses across different industries.

Mr. Ben Francia, owner and founder of Habilin Farms, emphasized the importance of bamboo in combating deforestation and mitigating climate change. He also discussed the business ideas that you can make out of bamboo.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on workshop, where they learned practical skills such as bamboo propagation.

Furthermore, discussions centered on the role of bamboo in ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation. By planting bamboo, communities can enhance soil health, prevent erosion, and restore degraded landscapes, thereby promoting ecological resilience and preserving natural habitats.

As the seminar drew to a close, participants left inspired and empowered to integrate bamboo into their sustainable development initiatives. By harnessing the full potential of this remarkable plant, we can pave the way for a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.
