SLSU joins Regional Multi-Sectoral Forest Protection Committe

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to be among the members of the Regional Multi-Sectoral Forest Protection Committee (RMFPC) in the CALABARZON Region.

On January 9, SLSU President Dr. Frederick T. Villa, and Mt. Banahaw Forest Protection and Conservation Unit (MBFPCU) Director Dr. Francisco N. Beltran signed the MOA. Under the agreement, SLSU will assist the RMFPC in the implementation of forest extension and educational campaign programs, as well as provide inputs to policy review and formulation on how to strengthen and effectively carry out IEC programs. The MOA will be effective for five years.

The RMFPC is composed of heads and representatives of different agencies, local government units, non-government organizations, enforcement sectors, and other stakeholders that work together on environmental and forest preservation projects.

CHED commends SLSU’s global impact

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) acknowledged the commitment of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) to excellence and global impact by giving four prestigious awards.

On December 18, Dr. Joanna Paula E. Verano, the Director of the International Affairs and External Linkages Office (IAELO), represented SLSU during the CHED Internationalization (IZN) Awards 2024. The university received four awards, namely: (1) Top 2 Performing HEI in Internationalization for Resource Generation; (2) World’s Most Sustainable University 2024, as recognized in the UI Green Metric University Rankings; (3) EDUrank Best Universities Award 2024; and (4) Recognition as an HEI with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Accreditation.

These prestigious awards underscore SLSU’s continued commitment to excellence in higher education, global partnerships, sustainability, and quality standards.

SLSU ranks 975th in UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024

Out of 1,477 institutions across 95 countries, Southern Luzon State University ranked 975th in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024, a ranking system that assesses an institution's sustainability performance.

The UI GreenMetric recognized the university’s efforts in policy implementation on sustainable practices, earning the 41st rank over 63 universities and colleges in the country, 536th place out of 866 entries in Asia, and 975th in the world ranking.

The ranking shows that the university is committed to combating climate change by promoting and creating a greener university.

In the pipeline for approval of the BOR are SLSU’s R&D Center for Agri-Aqua Resources, Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy, Center for Mt. Banahaw Studies, and Design and Innovation Center.

Nagtungo ang DA-ATI CALABARZON kasama ang Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) at Tanggapan ng Panlalawigang Agrikultor upang tugunan ang aplikasyon ng lokal na pamahalan ng Mulanay, Quezon ng pagtatayo ng Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center sa Tanggapan ng Pambayang Agrikultor nito.
Sa inisyatibong ito, nilalayon ng bayan ng Mulanay na mapalakas ang kanilang pagbabahagi ng impormasyon sa pagsasaka at pangisdaan.

The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), with the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Training Institute (DA ATI) IV-A and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) Quezon, conducted a Field and Desk evaluation for the Municipal Agriculture Office (OMA) of Infanta, Quezon as a potential Farmer’s Information Technology Services (FITS) Center.
Dr. Leomar C. Miano, TGP Quezon Team Leader, Dr. Lloyd Balinado, Deputy Consortium Director of STAARRDEC, Ms. Hanna Phoebe Romero, FITS Manager of Quezon Province, and Mr. Hans Christopher Flores of DA ATI CALABARZON, led the field and desk evaluation. They assessed the officers and staff of OMA Infanta to determine their readiness and capability to become a FITS Center.
In addition, the Office of Extension Services (OES) conducted monitoring of the existing FITS Center and KIOSK at the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of General Nakar, Quezon, located in Barangays Anolin and Pamplona. Engr. Jethro Auditor, Agricultural Technologist of OMA General Nakar and also the Information Service Specialist (ISS), participated in the monitoring activities ensuring the effective operation of their FITS centers and KIOSKs.
FITS centers are under the Techno Gabay Program (TGP) of the DA ATI, which aims to enhance the agricultural services and support provided to farmers, by improving their access to agricultural information, resources, and technology.

Kaalinsabay ng ‘Farmworker Appreciation Day,’ pormal na binuksan ng Tanggapan ng Pambayang Agrikultor ng Atimonan, Quezon ang Farmers’ Information and Technology Services (FITS) Center sa kanilang bayan.
Lubos ang galak ng mga magsasaka at mangingisda na nakasaksi sa nasabing gawain.
Ang FITS Center ay magsisilbing pasilidad na layong ilapit ang kaalaman ukol sa angkop at makabagong teknolohiya sa agrikultura para sa mga magsasaka, mangingisda, kabataan, at iba pang kliyente.
Nagpaabot naman ng pagsuporta si DA-ATI CALABARZON Center Director Dr. Rolando V. Maningas sa paglulunsad ng ika-18 FITS Center sa lalawigan ng Quezon, gayundin ang mga katuwang mula sa Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) at Tanggapan ng Panlalawigang Agrikultor.

SLSU joins RV University for an international research conference on climate change

As climate change represents an existential threat to our planet, demanding immediate and comprehensive action, RV University organized an international research conference on SDG 13 – Climate Action with a theme “Climate Change, Land Use Transitions, and Sustainability: Present Scenarios and Future Prospects.” RV extended an invite to SLSU to enjoin faculty discussants for knowledge sharing and awareness building on integrated land-use planning, robust governance, and active stakeholder engagement. Specifically, the event aims to showcase integrated approaches, promotes collaboration, identifies barriers and enablers, and conduct capacity-building.

Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr. of the College of Agriculture shared his research output on sustainable agriculture, foresty and land use, while Engr. Oscar Villaverde and Engr. Rossana de Veluz of the College of Engineering discussed salient findings of their paper relative to renewable energy, decarbonization and net zero, and climate crisis. Faculty members and students from both colleges attended the conference. It was an insightful exchange of research outputs on SDG 13-Climate Action. Learning from different countries’ experience on addressing climate change has provided additional knowledge and interventions to the participants.

Sa pagpapatuloy ng proyektong EJSRP 3, ang Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) ay muling nakipagtulungan sa Tanggol Kalikasan (TK) at sa Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) para sa “Knowledge, Networking and Learning Exchange for the Local Chief Executives of the LGUs of Quezon and Camarines Norte along the Pacific Seaboard” na isinagawa sa Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Dumangas, Iloilo, noong Agosto 5-9, 2024.

Ang nasabing aktibidad ay naglalayong sanayin ang mga lokal na tagapamahala ng Quezon at Camarines Norte sa mga batas, regulasyon, at ordinansa patungkol sa kapaligiran, kalikasan, at karagatan, pati na rin ang mga estratehiya sa pagpapatupad ng mga ito, partikular sa mga krimeng pangkapaligiran tulad ng wildlife trafficking, illegal logging, at illegal timber trade.

Mula sa Lalawigan ng Quezon, nakilahok ang mga Municipal Mayor, Vice-Mayor, at mga opisyal na delegado mula sa walong munisipalidad kabilang sina Hon. Mayor Eliseo R. Ruzol ng General Nakar, Hon. Ang mga lokal na tagapamahala ay bumisita sa BFAR Monitoring Center, DENR Biodiversity Bureau, sa Lungsod ng Quezon. Bukod dito, binisita rin nila ang Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) sa bayan ng Tigbauan, Iloilo City, pati na rin ang Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center-Igang Marine Station. Napuntahan din ng mga delegado ang Taklong Island Natural Marine Reserve (TINMR) sa Nueva Valencia, Guimaras Island.

Sa pamamagitan ng aktibidad na ito, inaasahan ang mga munisipyong kalahok na magpatupad ng kanilang Area Specific Action Plan (ASAP) na popondohan ng Tanggol Kalikasan (TK) sa ilalim ng proyektong EJSRP 3.

SLSU Nakiisa sa US Study Tour Para sa Patuloy na Pagtataguyod ng Katarungang Pangkapaligiran.

Ang Southern Luzon State University ay nakiisa sa isinagawang US Study Tour na bahagi ng proyektong “Environmental Justice Sector Reform Project, Phase III” ng Tanggol Kalikasan, Inc. Ito ay isinagawa sa Honolulu, Hawaii, at Isla ng Hawai'i noong Hulyo 28 hanggang Agosto 3, 2024.

Limang unibersidad at kolehiyo na nasa baybayin ng Philippine Rise (Benham Rise) ang nakibahagi sa programang ito. Kabilang na rito ang Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) sa pangunguna ni Dr. Frederick T. Villa, ang Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) kasama si Dr. Renato G. Reyes, Cagayan State University (CSU) kasama ang kanilang opisyal na tagapamahala na si Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, Isabela State University (ISU) kasama si Dr. Ricmar P. Aquino, at ang Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) sa pangunguna ng kanilang pangulo na si Dr. Marlo M. De La Cruz. Kabilang din sa aktibidad na ito ang mga gobernador at opisyal na delegado ng limang probinsya ng Aurora, Camarines Norte, Isabela, at Quezon.

Ang mga kalahok sa aktibidad na ito, kasama ang mga pangulo at gobernador, ay bumisita sa State of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife: Forestry Program, State of Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources, Fish and Wildlife Service Offices, kung saan pinakilala sila sa hakbangin upang maprotektahan at maibalik ang kasaganahan ng mga kagubatan ng Hawaii pati na rin ang kanilang karagatan at ang mga namumuhay doon. Nakapanayam din nila ang tagapangalaga ng Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, ang pinakamalaking marine conservation area sa United States.

Nasaksihan din nila ang mga gawaing pangkapaligiran ng US Coast Guard, District 14 Pacific Area, at NOAA Fisheries, Pacific Islands Regional Office. Isa pa sa kanilang binisita ay ang University of Hawaii Hilo, partikular ang kanilang Center for Community Engagement, College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Resource Management, Marine Science Department, at ang Geography and Environmental Science Department. Binisita rin nila ang Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, Honua’ula Forest Reserve, at ang Pearl Harbor National Memorial.

Ang bahaging ito ng proyektong EJSRP 3 ay naglalayong magbigay ng kaalaman at inspirasyon tungkol sa mga batas pangkapaligiran at mga gawaing nakakatulong sa pamamahala ng kalikasan, karagatan, at kapaligiran na ipinapatupad sa Honolulu at isla ng Hawai’i.

SLSU Participated in the Trainer’s Training on the Construction, Repair and Maintenance of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Patrol (FRPB) Boats

Continuing the pursuit for environmental protection and community empowerment, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) and Tanggol Kalikasan (TK) concluded under phase under the Environmental Justice Reform Program (EJSRP 3). This phase of the partnership involved a comprehensive Trainer’s Training on the Construction, Repair, and Maintenance of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Patrol (FRPB) Boats.

The training was held from July 15 to July 25, 2024, at the DA-BFAR FRP Boat Construction and Training Facility located in the Navotas Fishport Complex, Barangay NBBN, Navotas City. This hands-on training initiative aims to equip participants with essential skills in building and maintaining FRPB boats, crucial for patrolling and protecting coastal areas.

SLSU was represented by Prof. Edsel P. Paroan from the College of Industrial Technology (CIT), Engr. Oscar D. Villaverde from the College of Engineering (CEn), and Mr. Rigen De Asis from the Office of Extension Services (OES). They played an active role in the construction process, gaining valuable experience in various aspects of FRP boat building.

The training manual includes the Introduction of FRP boats in the Philippines, Familiarization to FRP, and Pre-construction and post-construction activities. The hands-on training included Wooden boat plug/pattern construction, FRP boat mold and hull fabrication, and Engine platforms mounting and fittings installation

The FRPB constructed during this activity will be deployed to patrol the coastal areas of Quezon Province along the Philippine Rise. This initiative promotes sustainable environmental practices in the province
