SLSU unites for change: 18-Day Campaign Against VAWC

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, launched a compelling and inclusive 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), beginning with a kick-off program on November 24 and culminating in a major awareness event on November 27 at the SLSU Gymnasium.

Kick-Off Ceremony: Raising the Banner of Advocacy

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, launched a compelling and inclusive 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC), beginning with a kick-off program on November 24 and culminating in a major awareness event on November 27 at the SLSU Gymnasium.

Massive Turnout and Meaningful Engagement

On November 27, the campaign reached a powerful milestone with 1,107 participants—students, faculty, and staff—gathering at the SLSU Gymnasium. The program featured three dynamic speakers who tackled critical issues surrounding HIV, gender-based violence, and legal protections.

•  Mr. Von Aldrin Quintillano, HIV and STI Surveillance Assistant from San Fernando City Health Office, delivered an engaging session on HIV awareness. He was joined by Mr. Laurence Palambiano, an HIV survivor and advocate, who shared his journey and declared, “HIV is not a disability.” His testimony sparked hope and positivity among attendees, especially those silently battling the condition.

•  Ms. Mutya M. Rada, from the Lucban MSWDO (Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office), provided a comprehensive overview of VAWC-related laws and international cases. Her message empowered women to speak up, asserting that “the voice of women and children must be heard to drive positive change.”

•  Atty. Gear G. Arellano, Legal Officer and M.O.V.E. advocate, emphasized the emotional toll of violence on women. Drawing from personal reflection, he likened hidden fear to the silent suffering many women endure. He urged men to become protectors and better individuals each day, stating, “Men are supposed to be the protectors.”

HIV Testing: A Sign of Growing Awareness

The event also featured simultaneous HIV screening, with 138 individuals tested—64 males, 74 females, and 4 males enrolled in PrEP. This marked a significant increase from last year’s 40 participants, a testament to SLSU’s growing commitment to health education. DOH Lucena volunteers commended the university’s progress in HIV awareness and testing.

Campaign Continues Until December 12

With the theme “SLSU UNiTEd: Hakbang Tungo sa VAW-Free Pilipinas”, the campaign will run until December 12, 2025, featuring more activities aimed at education, empowerment, and community engagement. The SLSU GAD Office continues to lead with compassion, courage, and commitment to a safer, more inclusive society.
