To mark the completion of their internship, the Tissue Culture Laboratory (TCL) and the Sanitation Facility facilitated a Culmination Activity on May 16 for their two BS Biology student interns from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU).
The two on-the-job trainees, Gem Angelli Abrenica and Bless C. Mayonado, presented what they learned and experienced during the 200 hours rendered in the two laboratories.
At TCL, they acquired expertise in the process of embryo-cultured macapuno, such as the collection of embryos, surface sterilization, media preparation, inoculation, subculturing, acclimatization, transplanting, and nursery management, among others. Meanwhile, at the Sanitation Facility, they experienced making Kamias Soap and Lambanog Ethyl Alcohol. They learned and were able to apply safety measures when handling dangerous chemicals. Moreover, the OJTs had the opportunity to explore and experiment on the process and ingredients used in the Kamias Soap and Lambanog Ethyl Alcohol.
Head of the Tissue Culture Laboratory, aProf. Kathleen O. Pornobi; head of the Sanitation Facility, aProf. Vanessa Cadeliña; and CAS Prof. Josephine Camson all expressed their gratitude towards the interns whose insights and efforts greatly contributed to the functions and growth of the two laboratories.
Student interns who are interested in having the opportunity to learn and experience the science and innovation behind propagation may message TCL through their FB page (@SLSUTCL) or email them at slsutcl@slsu.edu.ph. TCL welcomes student interns whose areas are in the field of technology, engineering, agriculture, biology, and allied medicine.
