SLSU empowers Lucban community with livelihood training for 61st anniversary

In celebration of its 61st Founding Anniversary, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) reaffirmed its commitment to community development by conducting a series of hands-on livelihood training sessions for residents of Lucban. The initiative, titled “Sustaining the Culture of Service and Community Engagement,” aimed to provide practical skills to boost local economic opportunities.

Through the Office of Extension Services (OES), the series of training directly empower community members with profitable skills, reinforcing the university’s role in community development.

The first session, a bread and pastry-making training, was held on August 27 at the College of Industrial Technology laboratory in partnership with the Sangguniang Barangay of Barangay 2. Facilitated by Dr. Bienalyn D. Tolentino, a CIT faculty member, the training equipped 25 participants with the skills to prepare and decorate dinner rolls and cake rolls.

Following this success, a meat processing training was conducted for Barangay 6 on August 28 at the SLSU Shared Service Facility for Meat Processing. Ms. Shyrille O. Lopez, an SLSU MRTL staff member and expert in meat processing, led the session. She began by instructing participants on essential Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and safety protocols before guiding them through the hands-on production of meat products like tapa, tocino, and longganisa. Twenty-nine residents actively participated in the event.

The series concluded with a candle-making workshop in partnership with the Progressive Entrepreneurs on Agri-Business and Related Livelihood Services Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PEARLS MPC) which was conducted on August 29 at the REPDI Training Center. Under the guidance of Engr. Lourdes A. Quevada, 29 community members learned to create and design candles for both personal and business purposes.

Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Jr., Director of Extension Services, emphasized the university’s mission: “Ang SLSU bilang pamantasan at unibersidad ay hindi lamang nagbibigay ng propesyonal [graduates] kundi tumutulong sa mga tao sa labas ng pamantasan [SLSU, as a university does not only produce professionals [graduates] but to help the people beyond its premise.” He reiterated SLSU’s unwavering support for elevating the economic standing of the Lucban community.
