SLSU Gears Up for Enhanced IP and Incubation Strategies with CvSU

In pursuit of advancing its knowledge in intellectual property management, technology business incubation, SLSU conducted a benchmarking activity at Cavite State University’s (CvSU) Knowledge Management Center (KMC), Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management Division (IPTBMD), and Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubation (ATBI). The visit served as a platform to exchange best practices and strengthen future collaborations between the two institutions.

The benchmarking visit commenced with a courtesy call at CvSU’s Administration Building, where the SLSU delegation was warmly received by Dr. Cristina M. Signo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Melbourne R. Talactac, Vice President for Research and Extension. Also present were key personnel from KMC, ATBI, and IPTBMD, who expressed their enthusiasm in sharing insights that could help SLSU enhance its innovation and technology transfer initiatives.

Advancing Intellectual Property Management: Insights from CvSU IPTBMD

The discussion on intellectual property and technology business management was spearheaded by Dr. Teddy F. Tepora, Head of IPTBMD. He shared valuable insights into the progress of CvSU’s IPTBM initiatives, highlighting how the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST PCAARRD) has played a crucial role in guiding and supporting their strategies.

Dr. Tepora outlined their structured approach to intellectual property (IP) filings, emphasizing the importance of scheduling and components of IP awareness through guided workshops. He also provided an in-depth discussion on pre-commercialization activities, including technology promotion, pitching sessions, and strategic technology transfer mechanisms that bolster commercialization initiatives. CvSU’s strong alignment with the requirements of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) was also underscored, ensuring compliance through annual clustering activities. Moreover, Dr. Tepora shared how CvSU incentivizes inventors and creators of IP, reinforcing a culture of innovation and research productivity within the university.

In his concluding remarks, Dr. Tepora emphasized that their efforts remain firmly aligned with CvSU’s institutional goals, reflecting a commitment to integrating IP management into broader university initiatives.

Strengthening Technology Business Incubation: Lessons from CvSU ATBI

The discussion on technology business incubation was led by Dr. Rowena R. Noceda, Project Leader of CvSU ATBI. She shared CvSU ATBI’s best practices in handling and selecting incubatees, providing insights into how they foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Noceda encouraged SLSU to strengthen product co-incubation practices in collaboration with CvSU, noting that joint incubation efforts would be mutually beneficial. She further elaborated on how DOST PCAARRD has supported their incubation programs, allowing them to scale their initiatives over the years.

One of the key takeaways from Dr. Noceda’s discussion was the importance of networking activities in attracting and securing startup funding. By establishing strong linkages with industry players, investors, and government agencies, CvSU has been able to provide its incubatees with access to critical resources and funding opportunities. As both CvSU and SLSU move forward with Phase 2 of the Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program, Dr. Noceda expressed high hopes for SLSU’s full support in driving shared goals for innovation and commercialization.

Moving Forward: Strengthening Institutional Collaboration

The benchmarking activity concluded with a discussion on potential areas for collaboration between SLSU and CvSU. A key priority identified was the formalization of an institutional partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, joint research initiatives, and a wide range of cooperative activities that will contribute to the enhancement of technology transfer and commercialization strategies for both universities.

SLSU and CvSU recognize that innovation and entrepreneurship are essential drivers of economic growth and regional development. By fostering a strong collaborative ecosystem, both institutions aim to build a sustainable innovation landscape that empowers researchers, faculty, and students to translate their ideas into viable commercial products and services.

A Future of Innovation and Shared Success

As higher education institutions play a crucial role in nation-building, initiatives like this benchmarking visit serve as a testament to the commitment of SLSU and CvSU to continuously improve their research and development ecosystems. By learning from each other’s experiences, both universities are paving the way for more robust technology transfer models and dynamic entrepreneurial landscapes that will benefit not only their institutions but also the wider community.

With the wealth of knowledge gained from this visit, SLSU is poised to further refine its technology transfer and incubation strategies. Through sustained partnerships, shared best practices, and an unwavering commitment to innovation, both SLSU and CvSU are set to make a lasting impact in the field of intellectual property management and technology commercialization.
