SLSU holds health education and environmental seminar in celebration of its 18th Charter Day

In celebration of its 18th Charter Day, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) successfully conducted a health education and environmental awareness seminar at Barangay 5, Lucban, Quezon, on March 26.

The event began with an opening remark from Dr. Felino J. Gutierrez, Director of Extension Services, who warmly welcomed the participants and highlighted the university’s extension effort, giving focus to this year’s theme, “Building a Better University, Serving a Greater Community.” His address was followed by a message from Hon. Dionisio R. Baldovino, Barangay Captain of Barangay 5, Lucban, Quezon. He expressed his sincerity, thanking SLSU for choosing Barangay 5 for this initiative.

University President Dr. Frederick T. Villa reinforced SLSU’s commitment to the local community, stating, “Asahan ninyo ang SLSU, hindi lamang sa usaping pangkalusugan at pangkapaligiran, sa lahat ng nais nyong programa ay nakahanda pong tumulong.”

Prof. Gerald R. Villaseñor from the College of Allied Medicine led an informative session on Dengue Fever, covering its origin, types, causative agent, transmission, symptoms, and management. He emphasized the severity of dengue, warning that negligence could lead to fatalities. “Ang pinakamagandang cure sa dengue ay prevention,” he stressed, urging attendees to take preventive measures seriously.

The second topic, led by Engr. Lourdes Quevada, sanitary engineer and former OES Director, focused on environmental conservation, particularly river conservation. She explained different types of waste, proper disposal methods, and the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle (3Rs). Using visual aids, she presented the current state of Kamatian River, calling for immediate preservation efforts. She concluded with a powerful reminder: “Ang tao ay ginawa para pangalagaan at pangasiwaan ang kalikasan.”

Through this initiative, Barangay 5, a community situated along the Kamatian River, gained valuable knowledge on pressing health and environmental concerns. The seminar equipped residents with practical strategies to combat dengue outbreaks and promote sustainable river conservation, empowering them to address future challenges proactively.
