SLSU ICO empowers students to deliver smarter Canva presentations

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through its SLSU Information and Communications Office (ICO), successfully conducted the webinar titled “Deliver Smarter Presentations with Canva” under its “From Pages to Pixels” training series, designed to equip the SLSU community with essential skills in digital design, branding, and presentation, on March 16.

The online training session brought together students from across SLSU campuses who were eager to learn practical techniques for creating effective and visually appealing presentations using Canva. SLSU Student Regent and Supreme Student Council Federation (SSCF) President, Hon. Jan Angelo Claierx O. Paderon, warmly welcomed the participants and emphasized in his message that platforms like Canva go beyond creating visual materials–they are tools for storytelling, advocacy, and awareness.

He furthered, “As student leaders and members of the organization, we carry the responsibility of ensuring that the voices of our fellow students are heard. Through creative and responsible digital communication, we can raise awareness for causes that matter, strengthen student voices, and reclaim our spaces in conversations that shape our campus and our society.”

University President Frederick T. Villa, DTech, supported Hon. Paderon’s message, noting that the initiative reflects SLSU’s commitment to digital literacy and innovation. “By equipping our students with tools such as Canva, we empower them to communicate their ideas with confidence, professionalism, and creativity–whether for academic presentations, research outputs, community initiatives, or future professional work,” he said.

Three speakers from the ICO, collectively known as Resident Page-Turners, facilitated the learning sessions by sharing their expertise in design and visual communication.

Ms. Sarah May R. Rivere, Information Officer, delivered the session on “Building Your Canva Brand Kit,” where she discussed the importance of establishing a consistent visual identity when creating presentation materials. She highlighted how proper use of colors, fonts, and templates can help students maintain a professional and cohesive design across their work.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jefferson L. Abris, Media Production Specialist, presented “Essential Canva Hacks for Beginners.” His session focused on practical tips and shortcuts that allow users to maximize Canva’s tools efficiently. During his discussion, he provided 12 essential Canva Hacks that may help participants create polished designs with ease.

Completing the series of discussions was Ms. April Arianne A. de Leon, ICO Head, who delivered the talk “Mastering Presentation Design and Delivery.” She emphasized the value of effective storytelling and engaging presentation techniques, encouraging participants to communicate their ideas clearly and confidently through well-designed slides and compelling narratives.

To further engage participants, Mr. Jake Española, ICO Media Production Aide, with the assistance of Mr. Ranjit G. San Jose, ICO Project Development Officer, facilitated the program flow and an interactive quiz. This allowed attendees to test their understanding of the topics discussed while maintaining a dynamic and collaborative learning atmosphere.

The “From Pages to Pixels” training series is part of the Re-ICO (Reinforcing the IEC Resource Pool’s Capacity and Outputs) program of the ICO, which the office extended to students in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs and Services – Information and Orientation Services.

In his closing message, OSAS Dean Aurelio Teodoro Maguyon, III urged the participants to use Canva to express their ideas, showcase their creativity, and share their knowledge with others while remembering that a good presentation is not only seen but also understood, remembered, and inspiring.

The activity forms part of the university’s efforts to strengthen students’ digital literacy and communication skills in an increasingly technology-driven environment and was conducted alongside other activities of SLSU’s 19th Charter Day celebration.
