The Information and Communications Office (ICO) of Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) officially launched the “From Pages to Pixels” (FPP) workshop series with its inaugural session on basic visual design using Canva, aimed at enhancing the design skills of the SLSU workforce, May 8.
ICO introduced the FPP workshop as part of its initiative to strengthen the expertise of IEC Focal Persons from each college, campus, and unit of SLSU. These personnel are responsible for developing visually compelling Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials tailored to their respective stations.
“The transition from pages to pixels reflects the growing need to adapt traditional communication methods into visually driven formats, fostering deeper engagement and understanding,” said Ms. April Arianne de Leon, ICO Head, during the event’s overview.
The first FPP features on-site “Training on Basic Visual Design using Canva”. The University President, Dr. Frederick T. Villa, and the Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Arvin N. Natividad, graced the occasion with their presence and thanked the initiative of the ICO and the participants for attending and for their efforts to enhance community engagement through public relations.
Almost 70 employees from the different colleges, campuses, offices, and units participated in the workshop. They engaged with the activities and discussions led by the invited subject-matter expert, Mr. Shazer Leo E. Ambas, Local Government Operations Officer V of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Head of the Creatives Unit and Head of Preparedness, Resilience, and Awards Unit.
The onsite training helped the participants familiarize themselves with the features and tools of Canva Premium, whose free access was provided by the University and facilitated by the ICO. This empowered the participants to utilize the user-friendly platform for diverse design needs and developed their hands-on skills in creating layouts and designs.
Ms. Sarah May R. Rivere, ICO’s Information Officer, served as the facilitator, ensuring a well-structured and engaging training flow, while Mr. Jefferson L. Abris, ICO’s Media Production Specialist, provided a comprehensive synthesis, reinforcing key insights and takeaways.
The training, held on the 3rd Floor of the University Library, marked a significant step in enhancing the university’s approach to visual communication. With strong backing from the SLSU Administration and funding support under the Faculty and Staff Development Program (FSDP) of the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), the workshop provided participants with essential tools to elevate their design skills.
As the initiative progresses, the next session will introduce basic video content creation, equipping attendees with techniques to develop engaging multimedia materials and further strengthening SLSU’s commitment to modernized communication strategies.
