The 1st Calabarzon Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Joint Meeting for Academe, Business, and Civil Society Alliance for CY 2023 was successfully held today, 19 September at St. Giles Hotel Makati, through the concerted efforts of the National Nutrition Council Calabarzon and the members of Calabarzon SUN 3.0 Networks.

This momentous face-to-face gathering was graced with the presence of various influential representatives from all sectors. The Academe, being represented by the identified Regional Convenor, UPLB-BIDANI through Dr. Clarissa Juanico, along with the Southern Luzon State University, National University, Adventist University of the Philippines, BCP, and National College of Science and Technology. While Philippine Nutri-foods Corporation through Mr. Paul Hipolito, represented the Business Sector as the identified Co- Convenor, together with representatives from the DMY Bakeshoppe and Swisspharma Research Laboratories Inc. Lastly, Ms. Vicky Wieneke of Kabisig ng Kalahi represented the Civil Society Alliance together with key personalities from Philippine Red Cross Laguna Chapter, International Rice Research Institute, AMORSECO, BabyDuDuDocs, IIRR, and the sole Youth representative, the Food and Nutrition Youth Network.

Among the highlights of the meeting were the discussion of Terms of Reference of SUN and efforts of NNC Calabarzon in the establishment of SUN 3.0 by DMO II Zarah Clarice Megino, the Regional Nutrition Situation based on the 2023 OPT Results by PDO I Julliene Louise Cuartero, and the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2023-2028 by OIC-RNPC Lourdes Orongan.

The participants during the technical session were very generous in sharing their valuable insights on the challenges and opportunities faced by each sector in addressing nutrition issues. The academe emphasized the need for evidence-based research and education, while the business sector highlighted the importance of making healthy food options available. The civil society alliance expressed the necessity of working together to establish policies and programs that promote good nutrition for all.

Overall, the diverse viewpoints provided a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of nutrition and the necessity of collaborative efforts to address it.

The meeting has fostered collaboration among the Calabarzon SUN Networks to come up with innovative projects and initiatives that will address malnutrition and hunger in the region, a Sectoral Regional Plan, which will be later on incorporated in the RPAN 2023-2028.

Meanwhile, the group was reminded to identify existing best practices among LGUs seen to have been effective in addressing malnutrition problem and strategize on scaling it up through an improved implementation system, wider reach and greater nutrition outcome.
With the combined efforts of the Academe, Business, Civil Society Alliance, and Youth, Calabarzon is on its way towards sustaining improved nutrition for all!

Ways forward include the presentation of workshop output by each network and draft Regional Sectoral Plan in October 2023 through a virtual meeting.
