SLSU claims back-to-back championship in CALABARZON’s Kabataang OA Quiz Bee

Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) has once again proven its dominance in the CALABARZON Kabataang Organic Agriculture (KOA) Quiz Bee, securing both first and second places through Joseph Carlo J. Viray of the SLSU College of Agriculture and Ms. Mary Grace Landicho of SLSU Tiaong, respectively, September 30.

As the top contenders, Mr. Viray received PhP 10,000, a medal, and a trophy, while Ms. Landicho received PhP 6,000 and a medal. Further, Mr. Viray will represent CALABARZON in the national KOA competition in November during the Organic Agriculture Month celebration.

Dr. Juanita A. San Jose, Dean of SLSU College of Agriculture (CAg), played an instrumental role in preparing the university’s contenders. Months prior to the competition, she spearheaded the conduct of a local elimination across various SLSU campuses offering agriculture programs. Justic Cedric Desembrana (CAg), James King R. Salamat (SLSU Tayabas), Johara M. Moyano (CAg), Brix D. Rementilla (CAg), Maria Justine A. Salumbides (CAg), Meryl P. Sabio (SLSU Infanta), Mr. Viray, and Ms. Landicho were among the top 8 of the said elimination.

The eight students underwent intensive training for the regional quiz bee under the guidance of Dr. San Jose, Dr Wendy C. Nombrefia (SLSU Infanta), aProf. Ma. Isabel V. Caringal (SLSU Tiaong), and Mr. Reymar A. Ortega (SLSU Tayabas).

Notably, last year’s regional champion, Ms. Melody R. Bolfane from SLSU Tayabas, placed 5th in the national Kabataang OA competition, a reason why SLSU served as the venue for this year’s event.

On September 30, a total of 55 participants from institutions such as Cavite State University, Batangas State University – Lobo Campus, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) – Lopez and Mulanay Campuses, Philippine Normal University – South Luzon, and Laguna State Polytechnic University – Siniloan Campus competed for the prestigious Kabataang OA 2024 title.

Three students from the PUP Mulanay secured the 3rd to 5th spots, making it the 2nd placer among the universities, followed by CvSU.

The Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) organizes the agriculture-based quiz bee annually to promote organic agriculture and boost enrollment in agriculture and agriculture-related courses.
