The Board of Regents (BOR) of Southern Luzon State University has officially approved the “Policy Framework for the Establishment of Research & Development (R&D) Centers” by virtue of BOR Resolution No. 74, Series of 2024, during its last meeting held at the Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, September 25.
The said framework serves as the guiding policy for the creation and management of R&D Centers of SLSU. It serves as the focal point for consolidating and advancing the University’s research activities, fostering collaboration, and facilitating interdisciplinary approaches.
The key highlights of the framework include:
▪ Criteria for the Establishment of Research and Development Centers: Current and emerging needs, Availability of in-house scientists and research experts, Sustainable Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Programs, Budgetary support to be provided by the University and/or external agencies, and Available office space and facilities.
▪ Functions of R&D Centers: Lead research, development, and training on particular subject areas considered to be priorities of the University. It shall establish, maintain, and promote research and development efforts that strengthen the University’s presence in particular research communities of practice.
▪ Organization: Covers the organizational structure of the R&D Center, Qualifications, Duties and Responsibilities, Benefits and Entitlements of Center Chief and Research fellows.
▪ Operational Manual: The R&D Center shall have an operational Manual that is approved by the Board of Reagents. It shall reviewed every once every 5 years to ensure its relevance with emerging research needs and priorities of the University and aligned to the R&D agenda.
▪ Funding & Revenue: R&D Centers shall be allotted funds necessary for its maintenance and operating expenses. It will offer services or products that can generate incidental income for the sustainable operations of the Center.
In the pipeline for approval of the BOR are SLSU’s R&D Center for Agri-Aqua Resources, Center for Social Innovation and Public Policy, Center for Mt. Banahaw Studies, and Design and Innovation Center.
By establishing Research and Development Centers, the University will be able to solidify its position as a leader in particular areas of research, aiming to contribute better to the development goals of the province and the region.
