Students and employees of the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) Infanta Campus along with the Municipality of Infanta gathered for “Araw ng Pananalangin, Pasasalamat, at Paggunita,” to inspire and educate the next generations on the tragic flash flood that hit the town in November 2004.
A meaningful commemoration took place on November 29 under the theme “Dalawang Dekada ng Paghilom at Pagbangon, Pabaon sa Bagong Henerasyon. ” The event began with an opening speech by Mr. Ron Crisostomo, EnP, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer. His speech emphasized that the purpose of this commemoration is to remind and advocate for the welfare of nature for future generations.
“If not us, who will advocate for the welfare of future generations in caring for nature?” Mr. Crisostomo asked in his speech. He added that this is an opportunity to reflect on our intergenerational responsibility to the environment and to give thanks to the omnipotent God for the blessings that we receive. He also highlighted the importance of immersing with the community, planning with them, and strengthening their capabilities.
Following the opening speech was a documentary titled “Matigal: Infanta’s Journey of Transformation,” written and directed by Dr. Winifredo B. Dagli, a professor from the University of the Philippines—Los Baños. It showcased the immense challenges faced by the community and how they demonstrated perseverance and resilience despite the hardships brought by the 2004 flash flood.
Central in the event was a significant message from Carlos Eduardo E. Alvarez, III, the Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense CALABARZON. His speech emphasized the importance of continuous enhancement of disaster response mechanisms so that the CaLaBaRZon Region can be better prepared for any forthcoming calamities.
The commemoration concluded with an eye-opening theatrical presentation by the Tribal Center for Development. The presentation is a call to action to take part in the intergenerational responsibility of caring for the environment. SLSU Infanta’s participation in this event is a testament to its unending commitment to environmental protection. Guided by its four-fold functions, SLSU Infanta plays a great role in developing programs, projects, and activities for the transformation of Infanta and Northern Quezon towards sustainable, responsible, and disaster-resilient communities.
