Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) is spearheading efforts to transform the nipa palm industry in Infanta, Quezon, with a focus on long-term community benefits. On September 16-17, 2024, key personnel from SLSU’s Innovation and Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO) and the Office of Production Services (OPS) conducted an in-depth assessment of the Nipa Palm Processing Facility at SLSU Infanta Campus.
Led by Mr. Giehway Liwanag (ITSSO Science Research Assistant), Mr. Jefferson Abris (ITSSO IP Management Specialist), and Mr. Aeriel Dimaranan (OPS Project Development Officer), the team examined the facility’s operations and explored intellectual property (IP) protections for the innovative nipa production processes. Dr. Violeto Coronacion, Director of SLSU Infanta and inventor of nipa palm products, showcased the entire production workflow, including the steam boiler operations of the Nipa Production Shared Service Facility. This knowledge will contribute to drafting a comprehensive Standard System Operating Procedures (SSOPs) Manual to ensure consistency and quality in future operations.
Beyond the SLSU campus, the team visited four barangays with village-type nipa processing facilities. Collaborating closely with local farmers, they discussed plans to improve production efficiency, expand commercialization, and develop new nipa-based products. These initiatives are expected to increase employment opportunities, uplift local livelihoods, and provide a model that can be replicated for other crops like coconut.
By supporting technology promotion, SLSU aims to foster economic growth and sustainability in Infanta. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to innovation that directly benefits the community, with potential for future adopters and incubatees to participate in the expanding nipa industry.
