In line with its commitment to gender equality and community extension services, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) conducted a seminar titled “Karapatan ng Kababaihan, Alamin at Itaguyod: A Seminar on the Magna Carta of Women for the Community of Brgy. 6” on April 21 at the Barangay Hall of Brgy. 6, Lucban, Quezon.
The seminar was organized in response to a formal request from the Tanggapan ng Sangguniang Barangay of Barangay 6. It aimed to educate the barangay’s community and stakeholders on the provisions of the law, raise awareness, and deepen understanding of women’s rights, contributing to the elimination of discrimination by recognizing, protecting, fulfilling, and promoting the rights of women.
The activity gathered members of the Sangguniang Barangay, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), Barangay Tanod, and parents of daycare children from Barangay 6. The seminar began with opening remarks from Hon. Melchor F. Bojelador, Punong Barangay of Brgy. 6, who warmly welcomed the participants and facilitators, emphasizing the importance of conducting seminars empowering women. This was followed by an inspirational message from Ms. Josephine Robelo, Social Welfare Officer and member of the Municipal Gender and Development (GAD) Office of Lucban, who commended both Brgy. 6 and SLSU for their continued efforts in promoting gender equality.
Leading the discussion on the Magna Carta of Women was Assoc. Prof. Rene P. Zubieto, Director of the SLSU Gender and Development Office. Through an interactive activity,participants shared their perspectives on womanhood and what rights they are entitled to. His lecture covered the purpose, scope, specific rights, and key provisions of the said law. The participants actively engaged in the session, sharing their own views and personal experiences.
The seminar concluded with closing remarks from Hon. Rosana P. Laguador, Barangay Kagawad and Co-chair of the Committee on Gender and Development of Brgy. 6, who urged participants to apply their new knowledge in safeguarding and promoting their rights as women.
