SLSU researchers bag best paper awards at an international research conference

Two conference papers from Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) were hailed as best in the recently concluded International Conference on Science, Technology, and AI Applications (ICSTAA) 2024 hosted by the Marinduque State University (MSU) in hybrid format, September 26-27.

Dr. Renato R. Maaliw, III, Professor at the SLSU College of Engineering, won the Best Paper Award in the Engineering & Technology Category for his winning paper titled “SCOLIONET: An Automated Scoliosis Cobb Angle Quantification Using Enhanced X-ray Images and Deep Learning Models.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Luis Miguel P. Saludez, an Associate Professor at the SLSU College of Teacher Education, along with students, Arabela S. Samarita, Jhayzelle Anne Roperez, and Julie Anne Navarro, won the Best Research Paper Award in the Education Category for their study, “Systematic Review on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in English Language Pedagogy.”

ICSTAA 2024 is a conference that aims to provide extraordinary opportunities to expand knowledge, network with global professionals, and explore how AI and technology are transforming education, research, and industry.

As recipients of the University’s Research Presentation Assistance, the winning SLSU representatives will also be entitled to best paper incentives by the end of the year based on the University’s BOR-approved Research Productivity Assistance and Incentives Scheme. This recognition underscores the administration’s commitment to academic and research excellence.
